Cupping is a pre-scientific traditional Chinese medicine technique where cups containing heated air are placed on the skin where the air then cools, creating a vacuum in order to draw out the bad chi or whatever.
I don't know if I would call him stupid. He had to know those oversized hickeys would be very visible to the viewing public. So I'm guessing he is somewhat of a drama king looking for the added attention as if he really needed it.
My mother used to place them many many years ago. I don't know if it is Chinese but to my understanding it was very common in Europa The drawing of vacuum was very effective were the person experienced discomfort of pain . This can be explained very simply , You create a vacuum is because that area of the skin have a poor permeability in the skin be it moisture or air , were vacuum did not take place it was considered a healthy area.
What skin has poor permeability? It breaks the capillaries under the skin, it's damaging to the body. I can even causes sepsis and death.
The cases I have witnessed the marks disappear in about 2 weeks. It was done on me my father and several others persons . Think as the container is exposed to a flame the container contains low concentration of air relative to normal surrounding, as the container is applied to the skin ( fast ) the relative vacuum starts to suck in the applied skin, if the skin releases air or moisture the cup does not adhere , considered healthy if the skin does not release air or moisture was considered not healthy and the suction stays for over 45 minutes as a result the mark will appear . I have not sean cases were the capillary breaks
I agree most of the time it's harmless, but it's also stupid and ineffective for anything. It's pseudoscience, and these athletes (admittedly not the most intelligent bunch) should be ashamed of promoting it.
I heard it's to improve circulation, and some athletes swear by it to improve recovery of muscles. So other than the lovely red marks it leaves for a couple of weeks, who are we to say an athlete is stupid for using legal means that help them compete? They're not touting it as scientifically supported, but at the top level you take whatever seems to work for you.
As I pointed out , how things are done and why, I believe the glass cup adheres , The treatment was done if a person had a bad cold and were the pain have taken place .What other opinion is available
In my last post Y don't care if is good bad or what "Science " say, we just don't know and I suppose there is no " scientific data " (scientific can be always generated ) I asked about why some adhere and some don't and the one, the one that adhere suck in the skin and other don't
constant practices of swimmer may cause them to catch pneumonia or muscle to strain. cupping is used for relaxing muscle with heat .instead of using muscle relaxing drug it is used as there is no bad side effect. unless people know the reason of other people .they should not sit back and judge them.
I'd like to believe that if the method wasn't helpful at all, that they'd not be using it. Can it be all in their heads? lol
Some people also use acupuncture, homeopathy, crystal healing, reiki, etc. and attest that those things are "helpful". What do you mean by "helpful"? That they make somebody feel good in some way? Or something else? How would you go about trying to work out whether it was "all in their heads" or whether there was something to it, objectively? Can this stuff be tested objectively, or is it all subjective? What do you think?
The money spent on it can be measured objectively(and the data bandwidth required to discuss it) Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! I assume it has been objectively measured to have little effect on account of the lack of clamour to have these "treatments" funded by the tax payer.
Have you ever used a holistic method to bring healing to your body? Modern medicine has its place, but there are terrible side effects to lots of medications that are often prescribed. If people believe that a holistic approach is healing them, if they feel significantly better than before using it, how can anyone judge that they're not actually feeling/experiencing that? I don't think it's solely subjective (although it can be), think if we were to test some of these methods, there might be objective findings to it. But, I'm a believer in natural approaches combined with modern medicine for optimum health.
Tim, the purple patches are broken capillaries. What you are seeing is massive bruising - caused by blood leaking from those broken capillaries into the flesh.
