Men and women have grown taller over the last century, with South Korean women shooting up by more than 20cm (7.9in) on average, and Iranian men gaining 16.5 cm (6.5in). A comprehensive global study looked at the average height of 18-year old men and women in 200 countries between 1914 and 2014.
The results reveal that while Swedes were the tallest people in the world in 1914, Dutch men have risen from 12th place to claim top spot with an average height of 182.5cm (5ft 11.9 inches).
Latvian women, meanwhile, rose from 28th place in 1914 to become the tallest in the world a century later, with an average height of 169.8cm (5ft 6.9in).
James Bentham, a co-author of the research from Imperial College, London, says that the global trend is likely to be down primarily to improvements in nutrition, hygiene and healthcare. He states that an individual’s genetics has a big influence on their height, but once you average over whole populations genetics plays a less key role. Most populations would grow to roughly similar heights if they were all in the same conditions.

At the same time that US wages flattened out, and income inequality grew quickly. The correlation between income inequality and short stature within the population of unequals is one of the strongest correlations involving human height. It matters as much or more than mean or median income.

There is a significant industry in the Netherlands raising door and ceiling heights in older buildings.

I believe this was observed about 30 years ago in the building industry . And it was noticed in Japan were they relate to red meat consumption
I believe if the female ( human ) is taller then the male the offspring will be taller then either of the parents, Don't ask for data, make your own observation and get your own data

Uh... The average American of African ancestry is taller than the average American of European ancestry.

More likely, they would gain any genuine extra genetic height from being mixed Euro and Afric from individually taller Euros (the correlation of height and financial success held among the pioneering stock of the Scotch-Irish, especially, that became the dominant slaveowners - the runts didn't do well on the frontier, or in the preferred stock among the oppressed Scots used to colonize the rebellious Irish in the first place), as well as hybrid vigor. Recall that the children of slaveowners seem to have had a somewhat easier time of slavery, on average, if anecdote is worth anything (and that would seem more likely than breeding slaves for larger size - being tall is not much of an advantage for picking cotton and similar work, and more expensive to raise and feed. Note the preference for mules over large horses, that kind of thing.)

If you want to speculate like that. I'd want to see the height stats on American blacks first - I have my doubts, on that score, in the first place.

Forget the myth about the tall, blond, modern Viking. Swedes are not the world's tallest.

They may have been the tallest people in the world a century ago. But in the past 100 years, Swedish men and women alike have seen themselves outgrown by several of their European neighbours, according to new findings published in medical journal eLife on Tuesday.

Some 800 researchers from global health science network NCD Risk Factor Collaboration, in association with the World Health Organization, mapped out the height of 18-year-olds in 187 countries and tracked their average growth curve between 1914 and 2014.

They found that Dutch men are today the tallest, towering over others at almost 183 centimetres. The most impressive women meanwhile, measuring on average 170cm, are to be found in Latvia. A hundred years ago the two countries were only 12th respectively 28th tallest in the world.

Swedes of both sexes, however, who measured more than 171cm respectively on average 160cm a century ago, have tumbled from first place to 15th for men and 17th for women.

Of course, they haven't so much tumbled as been outperformed by others. Swedish women have grown to 166cm today and men to around 180cm. Many other nationalities have simply grown faster.

While still shorter than Europeans, Iranian males have enjoyed the biggest height gain in 100 years, from 157cm to 174cm. For women, it's the South Koreans, up from 142 to 162cm.

The smallest men in the world are found in East Timor (160cm) and the smallest women in Guatemala (140cm a year ago, just below 150 today).

Researchers said the reasons were largely down to environmental factors – such as healthcare, nutrition and sanination – rather than DNA.

"About a third of the explanation could be genes, but that doesn't explain the change over time. Genes don't change that fast and they don't vary that much across the world. So changes over time and variations across the world are largely environmental. That's at the whole population level versus for any individual whose genes clearly matter a lot," lead scientist Majid Ezzati, from Imperial College London, told the BBC.

The Dutch are as much tall, blond, modern, northern Europeans as the Swedes - your source is a bit strange. And the question was about your assertion that slaves from Africa were "bred" for large size to any significant extent. It seems unlikely, given the economics involved. We request evidence.

The explosion in height that expanded throughout the colonial powers in the wake of the discovery of the rich plant foods and agricultural practices of the Americas by those already familiar with the sophisticated animal husbandry and mechanical innovations of the Eurasians is not mysterious in hindsight. It lacked only the political innovations establishing more economically egalitarian societies, and those being acquired from the temperate zone aboriginal Americans the race was on.
