Latvian women, meanwhile, rose from 28th place in 1914 to become the tallest in the world a century later, with an average height of 169.8cm (5ft 6.9in). James Bentham, a co-author of the research from Imperial College, London, says that the global trend is likely to be down primarily to improvements in nutrition, hygiene and healthcare. He states that an individual’s genetics has a big influence on their height, but once you average over whole populations genetics plays a less key role. It matters as much or more than mean or median income. There is a significant industry in the Netherlands raising door and ceiling heights in older buildings.

They were bread purposely to be bigger to get a better price . What we have is a product of Slavery period. A typical african male is no bigger then European descent.
More likely, they would gain any genuine extra genetic height from being mixed Euro and Afric from individually taller Euros (the correlation of height and financial success held among the pioneering stock of the Scotch-Irish, especially, that became the dominant slaveowners - the runts didn't do well on the frontier, or in the preferred stock among the oppressed Scots used to colonize the rebellious Irish in the first place), as well as hybrid vigor. Recall that the children of slaveowners seem to have had a somewhat easier time of slavery, on average, if anecdote is worth anything (and that would seem more likely than breeding slaves for larger size - being tall is not much of an advantage for picking cotton and similar work, and more expensive to raise and feed. Swedes of both sexes, however, who measured more than 171cm respectively on average 160cm a century ago, have tumbled from first place to 15th for men and 17th for women. Of course, they haven't so much tumbled as been outperformed by others. Swedish women have grown to 166cm today and men to around 180cm. Many other nationalities have simply grown faster. While still shorter than Europeans, Iranian males have enjoyed the biggest height gain in 100 years, from 157cm to 174cm. For women, it's the South Koreans, up from 142 to 162cm. The smallest men in the world are found in East Timor (160cm) and the smallest women in Guatemala (140cm a year ago, just below 150 today). Researchers said the reasons were largely down to environmental factors – such as healthcare, nutrition and sanination – rather than DNA.
