My son is planning to take his masters degree in Information Technology. He wants to take up master of data science which I have no idea about. I asked him and he said this entails "data governance" and whatsoever? I just wanna know what is this "data governance". What job fits him in the future?

Sorry I know this is not my job anymore, but as a mother I want him to give the best advise possible. Thank you.

Well, this a new development. I've studied computer science before this came up, so I can give only second hand information, but since a few years "big data", the science of collecting and researching big data sets has become a very important factor for many companies.

Basically, if something is too complex or chaotic to grasp by rules or formulas, you can still resort to collect statistical data about it, and use this data to make predicions, even without knowing the rules or formulas (if they even exist).

Famous examples of this are product suggestions made in online shopping, based on collected older interests of a customer, and comparing to what other customers with similar interests have actually bought in these circumstances. Many companies seem to think that "big data" will give them advantages in competition about customers, so they are very interested in it.

The other application that I can see is not directly economical, but research of all sorts of domains, where it's hard to find rules, but easier to collect data, and then try to find structures, correlations, in this data. The field is a link between research and application.

Information technology in general is a good field to find a job easily. Data science is a strong trend these days. Without knowing more about the talents of your son, I can just say, he chose a very promising and trendy field to study, and it should allow him to find a good job easily.

Data governance is all about ensuring that the data being entered into a system conforms to the correct standard for that system, and then is subsequently managed throughout the system and/or business in a formal manner. This can be good for business efficiency but is also to ensure that data is held and can be analysed appropriately according to various regulations that might exist, thus minimising risk that a business incurs fines etc.

At a basic level it helps improve data accuracy, as well as integrity, accessibility, consistency, etc.
Data science will cover all these areas - about how to handle and control data etc.

The Age of Information is not going away anytime soon. Data security specialists will only get more in-demand.

Your son could do a lot worse.

Thanks so much for your reply. I have been searching online to gather details regarding "what is data governance". I found some informative links but I think the information you have shared is more than enough. Just hoping that everything will turn out fine
