All I know of her are the old comedy special from the 70's. I have no clue about her personal or political life. I thought she had died by now.

I suppose this had some relevance 13 years ago.

I just can't think of anything bad to say about her. My mother was a fan, and we did watch their show when I was kid. She must be like 100 years old by now. I mean, she was on television when I was a little kid. Now I'm a senior who gets discounts at the store.

Who cares? Hate is a pretty strong word. I don't see anything to hate. I'm not a fan. But they use to be big, and back in the day she and her husband were pretty entertaining.

I never watched the TV show, but I've always been happy with her music. She's not one of my all-time favorite singers, and I've never gone to see her live, but I enjoy her songs when I hear them. I remember seeing her in the film "Mask" and I thought her performance was really good, worthy of the acclaim it garnered.

I'll say this for her, you might all hate her but she can keep a thread going for 13 years. Beat that, Madonna!

She'll be 70 on May 20. Three years younger than me.

Sorry, it's just that she's been around since I was a youngster, and I don't feel young anymore.

I understand, as I watch a parade of my favorite performers dying considerably younger than me: Chris Squire, David Bowie, Glenn Frey...

I've just noticed this thread. I can't see why I should bother wondering about whether I should like or dislike her. I've been vaguely aware that she's always been around and doesn't bother me much, rather like an anal fissure.

    Hate ?? for what ?

Hate / Love are emotive stuff, very strong feelings, needs some kind of emotional attachment. It is like/dislike not hate/love. Yes to hate her you must have fallen in love with her, as a fan, kind of single sided involvement, kind of infatuation, and then her action would have betrayed you. Thats fairly ok...read about empathy.

You must be an American like me. We all assume that we'll be just like we were at some very young age (mine is 30 but most people would pick a figure 10-15 years younger) forever, and then die rather quickly from something that isn't very painful--and above all doesn't make us look OLD!

I enjoy today's music, but I still like the music of my youth. Chuck Berry, the Everly Brothers, Johnny Cash, Elvis, Connie Francis, Johnny Otis, Marty Robbins, the Ventures, Patsy Cline...

The KJ at the bar I go to for karaoke managed to find "Nel Blu Dipinto di Blu" by Domenico Modugno for me. I was in high school when that hit the charts, and I still remember the original Italian lyrics! Today, if you ever hear it, it's generally called "Volare," 2/3 of the song has been eliminated, and it's got English lyrics that don't even try to be a translation of the original.

Bingo! Love em all! Would add to that the likes of The Platters, Paul Anka, Brenda Lee and a few Aussie artists of that late 50's, early 60's era that you Yanks are probably not familiar with.

    What about Deano!

Personally, not much into the music of today's generation [my Son tells me I'm caught in a time warp] but since those heady days of the 50's and 60's have grown to like some classical, and semi classical music and particularly a singer called Nana Mouskouri.

I remember Dean Martin singing the English version, which is not a translation of the Italian. I don't remember hearing him sing the original Italian version, and I can't find any info on the internet to settle the question.

I was quite happy with the rock'n'roll of the 1960s (Beach Boys, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Kinks, etc.), the 1970s (AC/DC, Fairport Convention, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Heart, Lynyrd Skynyrd, etc.), the 1980s (Duran Duran, Def Leppard and all those one-hit-wonders on MTV), the 1990s (Grunge was great but there were plenty of regular rock songs). The 21st century hasn't been as spectacular, but with Jann Arden leading the pack (a fabulous singer who fills hockey stadiums in Canada but gets almost no radio play in the USA), there's no shortage of good music.
    Nothin' wrong with that!

Can't hate anyone who came out with Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves. Some social commentary that came in the form of music is lost today.

Or, on the subject of Patsy Cline, Fraggle... Never No More. Not exactly social commentary, just... nice.

I suppose it's a shame, really, that it can take a popular computer game (Fallout series comes to mind) to bring the good old stuff to the attention of those who'd otherwise dismiss it out of hand.
