A team of University of Washington computer scientists and electrical engineers has demonstrated that it's possible to generate Wi-Fi transmissions using 10,000 times less power than conventional methods.
The new Passive Wi-Fi system also consumes 1,000 times less power than existing energy-efficient wireless communication platforms, such as Bluetooth Low Energy and Zigbee. A paper describing those results will be presented in March at the 13th USENIX Symposium on Networked Systems Design and Implementation.

Marvelous. Connect this breakthrough with your recent OP here: http://www.sciforums.com/threads/the-government-will-use-smart-home-devices-for-spying.155287/
Big Brother, in partnership with OCP (Omni Consumer Products - reference: Robocop) will be smiling, safely ensconced behind super-encrypted one-way-firewall surveillance complexes.

A technology no doubt inspired by the former Soviet KGB bugs embedded in the drywall of places like the United States embassy and self powered by low level microwave energy beamed through the walls. This just takes that technology to its logical conclusion. This should be great for spying also, and quite efficient. Now if only we could fire up the Cold War again.
