An experiment disproving gravity

    Okay so disproving gravity is actually really easy. Get a helium balloon and release it, and it floats away from Earth. If gravity really existed it would fall back down to Earth due to the gravitational field.

    Here's one you can try. Go up to the roof of a building and step off. If gravity doesn't exist you'll be fine.

    This isn't how science works. If you do one thing that disproves anything, the theory has to be remodelled.

    Not the exact experiment I used to prove gravity to myself, but close.

    In my case it involved a 10' halfpipe, a nail sticking up from the coping (between my skate's wheels as luck would have it) and a dislocated shoulder.

    Spoiler alert: gravity won. My right shoulder's still not totally ok 20 years later.

    You didn't disprove gravity, you demonstrated buoyancy. If you release the balloon in a vacuum it will fall down.

    We had a member who was banned that had the same silly misunderstanding between buoyancy and gravity. Got to look up who that was...

    Actually, it looks like there were a few members who thought helium balloons demonstrate 'anti-gravity', constant-theorist was the most recent confused individual...

    The helium filling the balloon is lighter than the surrounding air and is buoyant. If you let the helium out of the balloon, it will fall.

    Oh great.
    You don't even know what "buoyant" means.
    For information: there's no such thing as a "buoyant material" - thus NOTHING is made of "stuff that's buoyant".
