Bruce Jenner AKA Caitlyn Jenner, why do we need to know about this?

I am getting tired of seeing reports of the transgender operation of one person. There are less than 1% of the population that want to be transgender and even less that can afford such an operation. So why do we need to have this as front page news? A 50 year old has been that is transgender, what's the big deal here? I don't think that making space or giving air time to this one percent is needed when there are more things going on that need attention. So lets figure out why crap "news" like this is even being thrown at us because I can't understand why it is even news.

It seems to me that more "news" isn't news at all but only a way to stir the pot about something that doesn't need to be discussed for those who are transgender will get an operation if they can afford it and we will never know who they are and why should we it is their decision not ours. I'd think the less said about this would be better off for the transgender community for that way they don't have a spotlight on them and can live in the "straight" world without fear. The more attention given the more problems for them I'd think.

Maybe because he was a very public figure (through shitty reality tv) and she will continue to be that.

Personally I'm not affected in any way, shape or form, so good for her and I don't care one bit.

But "Amy Schumer is everywhere" is important news? Or "LeBron taps into his inner MJ?" (Current front page of CNN)

I think it's pretty cool that transgender people are becoming more accepted. I work with one, and she's had to hide it for a long time. I am glad there is now an example she can point to to say "see? I'm not a freak."
You have an excellent option if such things bother you - don't read them.

Well, if just seeing things offends you, then don't watch TV and don't read newspapers. There's a lot more offensive stuff in a typical newspaper than a story about a transgender woman.

I don't think anyone "wants" to be transgender. It's an anatomical disorder.

The more exposure this condition has, the more people will stop treating it as some kind of freakish thing and accept it as just another thing that some people are born with.

Indeed - it's particularly bad for those who are of the hermaphroditic persuasion at birth where the parents decide on which 'gender' the baby is going to be... it's a 50/50 shot they will choose "wrong" and the person will end up feeling trapped in the wrong body.

Bruce Jenner was a football star--a quintessentially male sport, one of few that does not have a women's league. More than that, he was an Olympic medalist. He was called "the world's greatest athlete" after beating the Russians in the decathlon, an event that had been a Russian specialty for many years.

In other words, he was a "man's man," as the British put it. To discover that there was a woman's soul concealed in a male body that put most of us men to shame... This is, indeed, big news.

If he/she had been the world's best accountant, chef, news reporter, guitarist, attorney, chemist, puppeteer, dog breeder, etc., this would not have been so newsworthy.

People are born with many medical disorders that are life threatening so wouldn't it be of more importance that people are informed about those conditions so that they can discuss them? Clef lips are one of those conditions but rarely do I see anything about that condition ever mentioned on the news. I just do not understand why only Jenner was talked about when there have been many others with Jenner's condition. Seems odd that until Jenner did this it was never talked about until now.

Why did the media wait until now to discuss this condition?

Why do we need to know about this? As you say there are more things important to discuss than this.

Maybe because, like Magic Johnson and Freddy Mercury with AIDS, Jenner's a public figure.

We tend to be focused on celebrities and their issues rather than on people down the street having the same issues.
A person everyone knows will get more attention than your average Joe/Jill.

Definitely bigger stuff to talk about... So why keep bringing this up?

Because a lot of people think transgender people are sick freaks, losers who just want attention - and it's good to know more about someone who is not.

As you say, it's not all that important compared to, say, what is going on in the Ukraine - yet you keep posting about it. Five posts so far about a topic that you say you don't want discussed. Interesting.

You must have missed the coverage on Chaz Bono. There was a lot of media coverage when he was on Dancing with the Stars.

I've answered questions with 4 of those 5 posts so I'm not adding anything new but just trying to be helpful to those who ask questions or make statements about my OP.

Yes I did miss that because there wasn't much media coverage as there is with Jenner.

    It's all very meh.

Kim Kardashian is his step daughter i think. I mean her step daughter. It's all confusing to me.

I guess they're all relevant from the reality tv show they were on. Bruce Jenner won a a gold medal in a decathlon nearly 40 years ago. I've never heard of this person until a year or two ago when her family got loads of media attention.

Come on this is America, we do not have time to watch and certainly not read actual news that makes a difference in our lives. We want to be entertained - even if it is the news. The news networks are not stupid, they want high ratings to increase their revenue so they supply the useless crap American's demand.

    It is really, really depressing.

I don't think that most Americans really enjoy crap "news" like this about Jenner. I'd like to see a survey where people who want this kind of stuff being thrown at them like it or not. Many people like you think that the media does this because people want shit news about people and not about real hard core news. I'd think not according to those who I talk to.
