Joseph "Beau" Biden III, the son of Vice President Joe Biden, has died from brain cancer, the White House announced Saturday evening. He was 46.

Biden served as Delaware's attorney general for eight years from 2007 to 2015. In 2010, he suffered a mild stroke, but recovered and went back to work. Three years later, he began receiving treatment to remove a small lesion in his brain. He was being treated at the Walter Reed Military Medical Center as recently as last month.

Beau Biden, an Iraq War veteran, had planed to run for governor of Delaware in 2016 instead of seeking a third term as attorney general.

Prior to his tenure as attorney general, Beau worked in the private sector. He was also a prosecutor in Philadelphia's U.S. attorney's office for nine years.

"More than his professional accomplishments, Beau measured himself as a husband, father, son and brother," the Biden family said in a statement, calling him "quite simply, the finest man any of us have ever known."

My condolences, of course, but in truth all I can think right now is that I'm a father, too, and I simply can't imagine a day like today.

The Biden family will endure; it's what they do. I can only wish them the best in this time.

My wife and I are hoping to start a family in the near future... I cannot imagine what it would feel like to have to bury a child

Let alone two children in one's lifetime.

    What a tragedy.
