Well I wouldn't say they were there for the same reasons that women were trying to stop the sale of alcohol but to make more money from selling it illegally.

Who thought up the idea that Cannabis was more dangerous than Methamphetamine or Cocaine?
This schedule list is seriously screwed up.

It would be interesting, if someone could find the figures, to compare the proportion of people jailed in the 1920's for selling alcohol, with those jailed now for selling marijuana.

There has to be fewer selling alcohol because there were fewer people back then and the mafia paid off the police not to bust their operations so fewer were jailed.

not really, MJ belongs somewhere between heroin and LSD in its effects.
the effects of street weed can be likened to beer but it isn't a direct comparison.

both are psychoactive and both are hallucinogenic.
the only real difference between them is addictiveness.

no, i don't know where you are getting this shit from beside the movie reefer madness[1936] but marijuana has no where near the hallucinogenic effect as lsd, acid. not even shrooms. (shakes head)which is the less of all three.
also, like alcohol is not psychoactive ?

Agreed. That statement has little connection to reality.

Prohibitions are designed to create black market monopolies under the guise of do gooding. Prohibitions are also used to create a lot of jobs for lawyers, judges, police and prisons. This also creates secondary jobs for support industries from auto to office supplies.

Therefore the biggest losers, in terms of making marijuana legal, are black market and all the "legitimate" occupations above that benefited by a subjective criminal class; victimless crime. There are a lot of jobs at stake, that will eventually need to be trimmed. Their collective strategy could be misinformation to restore the black market.

To me lying politicians create a higher social cost than pot smokers. The lies about the web site for national health care being up and running, alone, already cost over a $billion extra. If we had nipped those lies in the bud we would be ahead. This money could have gone to schools or the poor.

Why don't we have a prohibitions against lying politicians? Following the template, this will benefit lawyers, judges, police and jails. However, this will not allow a black market to form. The formula is not complete because there is no way to perpetuate the supplies of lies with a black market. Black markets need things that are tangible and subjectivity ambiguous to assure demand during the prohibition, to justify the rest of the jobs. Lying is not tangible and is less ambiguous and therefore does not fit the template as well as alcohol, pot and big gulp drinks.

One black market we could create, using an analogy to one aspect of pot misinformation is; the country has a high level of obesity. I pose that chocolate is a gateway food to obesity. We could make a chocolate prohibition because we are concerned and wish to close this gate to obesity. This is subjective and will do the trick. The demand will remain and we will be able to pretend to be concerned to fools the naive. This should allow a black market to forms, that justifies more jobs for lawyers, judges, police and prisons.

I've been a chocaholic since I was a child. I've never been even close to obese.
A chocolate shortage is already predicted in the next couple of years. Prices are expected to skyrocket and the high-percentage chocolate bars will become difficult to find and purchase.

Isn't that good enough fer ya?

The use of Marijuana as a medicine has been in debates for so long. I think studies has been conducted and proved that it may help in various diseases/conditions. My stand is only one thing, if it will be use to cure, then why should we stop it?

I believe cannabis should be either as legal as tobacco and alcohol, along with that same restrictions regarding age of consumption and public smoking/drinking laws. Albeit with the most restrictive of each being applied to cannabis - such as intoxication while driving or smoking in public places.

Or alcohol and tobacco should be as illegal as cannabis with the same criminal penalties for possession and so on.

    After all, fair's fair.

Tobacco is more of a health risk than cannabis. Smokers, on the average, die 20 years earlier than non-smokers. Even smoked, cannabis has only a modest impact on life expectancy, and today people are turning to other, safer means of using it.

And alcohol causes far more social problems than cannabis. Millions of people are killed by drunken drivers. Many have ruined their lives, by being too plastered to go to work, too stupid to get through school, or too violent to maintain a marriage.

Cannabis, on the other hand, has many medicinal uses, e.g. for people with MS and glaucoma, and cancer patients recovering from chemotherapy. Its major drawback is a temporary loss of IQ points, but for lawyers, computer programmers, physicists, and others who will still be smart enough to tie their shoes, flush the toilet and turn off the stove, this gives them time to concentrate on painting, music, or some other avenue of creativity.

I still cannot find a single legitimate reason NOT to legalize Cannabis... the only reasons I can find any logical basis in are that some industries (tobacco, textile, medicine) don't WANT it legalized because it would cut into their profits...
