Whatever they were they didn't have societies.

Any type of oversight commission would not work today because any country can hide what they are doing so if anything could be found out that country would only deny it. Ask Russia what it uses and find people willing to testify about what happened to them. They probably would be shot.

    Society defined:

: people in general thought of as living together in organized communities with shared laws, traditions, and values

: the people of a particular country, area, time, etc., thought of especially as an organized community

The first were not anything near that definition. A pact or herd isn't a society for they only are together for surviving not making laws starting traditions or have any values.

The line between "pack" and "society" is a thin one, and you'd probably be hard-pressed to decide at what point (how many people? how well they communicated? whether they shared goals?) the definition changed from "pack" to "society."

it would depend a variety of things.
two of the most important would be the persons health and their immediate environment.

A single person of rural background has much better chances than a city bred one. Fporget about a supply of candles and matches, electric generators are a far cry. Alcohol should not be much of a problem.

After abandoning even cities would start crumbling, and after 10-20 years, crumbling buildings would be dangerous to approach. Therefore a life in country side would be better than the deserts of cities. Grazing animals would start proliferating almost immediately, and within 10-20 years there would be predators. Alley cats and dog packs would plentiful and dangerous.

That hypothetical single man, even if young and healthy, would not survive to die, but will get killed. But groups can survive, after all they did.

You mean Adam? No, homo sapiens did not descend from that imaginary Adam, but from an evolutionary line which produced primates, all of which are social animals.

    How long would they last?

Sextant a very long time if you protect it and clean it. Watches will last a long time too, but always have a few in case. Navigation charts are enclosed in plastic so they will last a long time. All three will probably out last and still be here when you pass

You could keep a few of your own Rottweilers.
Plenty of dog food in the shops.
What would packs of dogs and cats feed on once the bodies had been eaten?
    They haven't got tin openers.

Pacts, herds and groups are societies.

Yup. All that has existed throughout our evolution.

So laws were written, had traditions and values when they first appeared? How could they if they couldn't talk, write or understand anything else but survival.
