That is a reasonable precaution, given the current uncertainty.

Will the workers be recompensed for loss of earnings, and protected against being fired for not coming to work?
Or are people expected to risk their lives fighting Ebola, and then pick up the tab?

    Here is the disconnect.
You have scientists saying that the disease is hard to catch.
And then you have New York Governor Cuomo saying
I think that he is wrong about that, but I am not certain.

Well that is just it. You have government officials telling the public Ebola is difficult to get and they can handle it. Then right out the gate we see people who are suppose to know how to handle Ebola down with the disease. We see inconsistencies and contradictions all over the place.

I have noticed the administration has pulled Dr. Frieden (AKA: Dr. I got my contact-tracer sheet on you) from the microphones.

Well, when it comes to medical advice, I generally go with the doctors and scientists, as opposed to the politicians.

You believe them even when they issue contradictory, inconsistent, and blatantly erroneous statements? I don't care who you are, when you start issuing demonstrably false statements and are evasive, you evade answering questions. I for one am not going blindly accept your statements as gospel. That is a very serious problem the administration faces. It has a real credibility problem with Ebola.

Definitely not - which is why I don't believe politicians. The statements from the medical community have been far more accurate and consistent.

And your evidence for that contention on this issue is where? If this were properly managed from the beginning, the administration wouldn't be in this predicament and Americans would have more confidence in the agencies of government responsible for managing this outbreak. But that hasn't happened. The administration needs to get honest with the American people and they should have done it long ago.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the current administration Ebola PR person, needs to answer questions directly and honestly. Something he has yet to do. No more evasion, what has the administration done to prevent another Duncan? And the answer to that is nothing. Another Duncan or a bunch of Duncans could be entering the country daily. Physicians who are supposed to be "self quarantined" are routinely breaking self quarantine.

So you're saying politicians screwed up. Yes, that's my point too. People would be far better off listening to doctors and scientists rather than politicians. There would be more understanding and less panic.

Airport screenings. But if your question is "will that guarantee it?" No, it will not. Which is why the #1 priority should be research into vaccines and antiviral treatments.

The administration said is working on new guidelines that will protect Americans. Those guidelines should have been in place long ago, back in the day when they were saying Ebola would never be a problem in the US and they could handle it.

"A senior administration official said Sunday that new federal guidelines under development would protect Americans from imported cases of the disease but not interfere with the flow of U.S. health workers to and from West Africa to fight the epidemic there." http://online.wsj.com/articles/chri...quarantine-for-health-care-workers-1414335046

Yeah, the administration screwed up and so did the physicians. Obama is pointing the finger of blame at physicians. Physicians are pointing fingers at politicians. Both groups have credibility problems. But the state governors who have implemented quarantines are acting responsibly. The Pentagon has implemented a quarantine on military personnel returning from afflicted countries.

The problem for the administration is that people do understand, not that they don't. And as long as the administration continues to operate on the notion that people don't understand they are fighting the wrong animal. The administration needs to understand their statements are just not consistent with reality. It's not their businesses that are being closed. It's not their children who are becoming infected.

You are using another straw man. I didn't ask for guarantees. I asked what has the administration done that would have prevented another Duncan from showing up on American shores. And the answer is nothing. Nothing the administration has done would prevent another Duncan from showing up on American shores. As I have stated over and over, there could be scores of Duncans arriving on American shores every day. The nation is just as vulnerable to another Duncan as it was the day he arrived in this nation.

Today there are reports of a 5 year old boy in New York who may have Ebola. If Obama had implemented a travel ban (i.e. visa bans) Duncan and that 5 year old boy would have never entered the country. That still leaves us with the problem of returning Ebola workers breaking "self" quarantine.

OK, then the answer to your question is airport screenings. Next question?
How many Americans did Duncan kill?
And, if he had it, would have died in agonizing pain in West Africa. Yay! Now he will probably live. Boo.

From a recent article in the WSJ: "People whose jobs won’t compensate them during their quarantine would be paid by the state."

LOL, spreading Ebola around the world does nothing to help those afflicted with Ebola. It just adds more people to the suffering masses.

The question you are avoiding is how many people did Duncan infect? And to date, that number is two.

No, but getting that 5 year old to the US will sure as heck help the 5 year old. Otherwise he is likely to die.
Yep. And both are now cured, and are Ebola-free. So the number of people who Duncan killed? Zero.
If that's your epidemic, then it's the best epidemic ever,

Except you don't know the 5 years old odds of survival. We don't even know if he has the disease yet. We do know he is exhibiting symptoms and has been in the afflicted regions.

Two, assuming he is infected, how many people will he give the disease to and put at risk?

Three, you keep tossing around the word "cure" inappropriately and using as a get out of jail free pass. There is no known cure for Ebola.

Four, you are using yet another straw man. I never said the disease was epidemic in the US. More than 4 thousand have died in West Africa where it is epidemic. And that death toll will soon exceed 10 thousand. Within a year that number could easily exceed a million. And you think that is the best epidemic ever?

Agreed, we don't know if he has Ebola. If he does his odds of surviving it here are far higher.

He will put far fewer people at risk here than he would in Africa. So from the standpoint of stopping the disease, he's better off here.

A strawman from you. I said he was cured, which is a fact. I did not say there was an approved (known) cure.

Here is the problem, you have absolutely no evidence to come logically come to those conclusions. And this isn't about Africa, it is about the US and it is about containing the disease. One more person, on top of the near 5000 who have already died in West Africa isn't significant. Placing a population of 330 million at risk to potentially save one life really isn't very humanitarian.

That isn't a straw man. I said you have been using the word "cure" very loosely as if we had a magical cure for the disease, which we obviously do not have. There are no known cures for the disease per the previously referenced Food and Drug Administration. The fact is as I have repeatedly said, the nation is at risk of another Duncan and this 5 year old may well be the next Duncan.

Thus far we have been lucky thus far. But as the old adage goes, if you play with fire, eventually you are going to get burned. And in this case we are talking about the lives of millions of people and the economic well-being of billions. That is a pretty high stakes game you want to play.

Obama's government is in the strange and contradictory position of imposing mandatory quarantines on military personnel, but opposing civilian use of quarantines for Ebola. That's more than a little hypocritical.
