Do you have any objections other than that a few people were acting like idiots liking everything?
That wouldn't have lasted long, and people would have stopped if it was explained that it caused a problem.

You don't have to use the button if you don't want to.

I don't think a like-button has any place on a website like this. But, it seems, I'm in the minority.

Which is why the "Science" channel has 18 hours/day on ghosts and UFOs.

There was one on "another science forum" and I think it had its uses. People used it to express agreement, saving the need for making their own contribution. One good effect I think it had was that good posts could get visible recognition, which I think was an incentive to make good posts. Certainly I was always mildly gratified to discover someone else thought what I had written was worth saying, and it did tend to put me in a frame of mind to contribute again. At least it was proof somebody was reading the stuff.

Much to everyone's disappointment, the feature was later disabled, for some never explained reason, though some people thought it was to do with a security weakness exploitable by hackers, I believe.

I never felt it did any harm and on balance I think it was beneficial.

    -----------

would there be a way to make it so that if a problem users, abuses that function, when he gets kicked, the system could take back everything he liked..?

I don't part like the idea of a 'like' button.

It might be a good way of measuring who the most popular posters are. But I worry that might turn out to be a measure of conformity, a function of people saying things that the crowd wants to hear. That might be a good thing in a social club, but not so good on a discussion board.

It reminds me of high-school. There's something cliquish about it.

Maybe a sort of flood control feature could be coded to limit the number of likes a member can submit per day?

    That's usually pretty simple stuff..

Yes. I agree whole heartedly. I already voted 'no' though. If there were a like button, I would use it for this post!

the idea of a like button sucks, plain and simple, URL exploits are in addition.

A moderator 'lobbying' over something like a site feature?
It just strikes me as too funny at the moment.
Possibly a button that allows posters to throw feces at each other would go over well at this forum. (Wanders off to see what's shaking on the other science forums...)

If he feels that the website doesn't need a like button he can help prevent it by voting.
