It's pretty much accepted that my state Oregon will legalize pot this November. I don't smoke pot, but I would like to try an edible version. Is the high different when you eat it? Do you get sick?

It's not at all a given. We need to get the vote out! I donated to measure 91.

Anyway, the high takes longer to come on, about an hour, and it can be much more intense, depending on the dose of course. There is more of a chance of taking more than you want and getting the spins. I've never thrown up from edibles, but I have from taking in too much smoke.

    I'm a cancer patient...

I am allowed to smoke it, and ingest it...by California law.

I was Border Patrol for almost twenty years...
My job was to make sure bud didn't make it across the border.

Now, I'm thankful it does, or I'd already be dead.

    Life is strange...

The most wonderful plant. I take all the fan leaf and mix 1oz/3 bars of butter. I cook at slightly less than 200^f for about an hour. That's a temperature for NOT scorching the butter, not vaporizing any components, while breaking the THCa down to THC. I keep it in the freezer leaving the leaf in the butter. For consumption I'll break that into 25 to 30 doses. Heat it up on WARM (still don't want to scorch the butter or vaporize components) and pour on my boiled eggs or eat it with a spoon. That's a pretty safe dose if your used to it. It's a nice body med and you can continue the consumption of flowers at the normal pace without getting over medicated (whatever that means,LOL). If you're not used to it be careful. Gremmie I'm happy for you. I think the problem with dispensary edibles is they feel obligated to put a bunch of bud in the edible and scare the crap out of the uninitiated.

Did you get your card through the normal medical channel or did your doctor prescribe the medical cannabis? For severe nausea it's unbelievable effective.
Hope the cancer takes a hike.

If you buy the edible from a dispensary collective be sure they can tell you something about potency. And then dose accordingly starting out very conservative. These strains 'without seed' are very potent so to start with it can be a bit of a wild ride.

Is there any idea about the standard THC milligram level? Enough to get you a good high but not enough to give you the "dizzies"? I would think corporations would be investing in manufacturing pure THC pills by now.

    It was prescribed...

If it wasn't for that, I wouldn't be able to keep food down.
I'd already be dead. I see nothing wrong with weed.

It certainly does less damage than alcohol, and should be legal.

And thanks... Going thru second round of chemo/radiation therapy. Sucks.

I smoke every day and I see things. It comes when I'm good not necisarily because I am high but also because I am high.

    Amen!

Long ago, I was a young republican and an avid reader of and listener to William Frank Buckley, Jr.
Long since having moved to the left(I admire Carter), I was still pleased when Buckley came out against the war on drugs a couple decades ago.

I was an avid WF Buckley fan and subscribed to the National Review back in the Reagan days. Remember Firing Line? Thank gawd I turned left around the time of the second Bush. Been happily liberal ever since and WILL vote for legalization of pot come November. Allows police to focus on REAL crimes for a change.

What I was asking was whether it was your doctor or a doctor you specIfically went to for the purpose of getting your documentation as a medical cannabis patient? I was curious about how enlightened your doctor is? It shouldn't have been illegal or compared to the debilitating effects of alcohol. The list of medicinal attributes is extensive. I'm glad it's there for you.

Well, i would say that to much of any drug or substance will put your bichemistry off balance, if it is pot then drink water.

Another reminder modern pot is not the same as pot used by early westerns or colonial americans, modern pot is much more stronger than pot of the past, and so the ablitiy to enjoy the pot has changed as a custom, pot tea is also different than early american pot tea of the same reason it is stronger than in the past. the type of pot that you buy on the street is something that should be restricted to medical use, the type of pot used during early america history colonial times is the only kind that should be legal for public recreation, suhc pot is very low grade but is of comfortable smoking or tea drinking on the social.
in states or places where pot has become legal or will be there should be a grade system, which limits the amount of intake that can occur even when the product is abused by some youngster, and limits also the order of dependance biological of mental. thing is you won't find politicans makeing these points, but clearly we can not drug society with many different drugs some social drugs may work in promoting postive soical behavior out as outlets for tensions, even so many drugs will have to remain illlegal. Pot has been deemed to be one of the safest social drugs so from that stand point i think that it should be legal in comparisons to some other legal social intoxicants, such as alcohol which is a listed poison.

It takes much longer for the THC to enter your blood, and it happens very slowly. It will probably take at least half an hour before you feel any effect, and the effect will continue to increase for at least another half hour. If your stomach is not empty it might take considerably longer than that. It's very easy to overdose the first time you take it orally, so start with a small dose (I'd recommend no more than one eighth of a gram, and yes you're going to need a very good scale) and see how it works. Give yourself a week to get it right.

You can also brew the leaves and drink it like tea, but everybody agrees that it tastes terrible. Many among the serious medical crowd buy 181-proof rum (90% alcohol) and make an infusion, simply letting the herb soak in a sealed container for a couple of weeks. It works better and faster if you grind the leaves to powder first. You wouldn't want to drink that crap straight, but it comes out very strong so you can mix it in with real tea or just add it to a recipe and eat it that way.

The most popular way to ingest it is probably by baking it into brownies. The chocolate tends to cover the not-very-pleasant taste of the dope so you can make it rather strong. The less you put in your stomach with the pot, the faster the THC will enter your blood. You don't want it to take four hours because you'll never get a very strong high that way.

Last but not least, ingestion is a very inefficient way to take THC. It will probably take four or five times as much herb to get the same effect as inhalation. This makes it a rather expensive medication--which is why the recreational crowd just smoke it despite all the drawbacks. You might try a vaporizer to save money--it doesn't actually burn the leaves so it's not as harsh as smoking. If you grind your leaves into powder you'll get the most for your money.

The son of some friends of mine was wasting away from loss of appetite after chemotherapy. They finally planted a marijuana patch for him in their backyard. Their friends, neighbors, the cops, pretty much everyone in town knew about it (all the kids came to their house for parties) but they just ignored it because it was working. I lost touch with them decades ago, but he was still going strong after ten years.

    Good luck.

I doubt that I ever "turned left" I just kept going farther and farther right past libertarianism into the void, then found myself on the radical left, and then, moved a tad toward the center. (mostly because the radical left seemed to be largely populated by really lazy people).
The problem with libertarianism is that it would call for unwinding all of the special deals for various segments of the polity, which began to seem impossible. Then, comparing our system to those of european nations, we seemed to be coming up short for the "common man". (one look at the "rights" of prisoners in Serb prisons says a lot). One thing led to another. Now I'm a libertarian socialist --- a follower of ron paul and dennis kucinich. i liked what they had in common, and preferred the social policies of kucinich.
    .............
    Back to pot:
Keeping it illegal is pure insanity.
    Or is it really?
Some days, when I look at the prison population which has lower than average IQs, higher than average proportion of mental illness, and higher than average minorities when compared to the population at large, I wonder: "Are the current incarceration policies just a backdoor continuation of the eugenics laws"? Is the intended goal to keep the "social undesirables" incarcerated during most of their potential breeding years? Are the policies really insanity or are they poor masks for a more sinister agenda?

Who lobbies against decriminalization of marijuana?

You can run a gas chromatograph giving you a complete read out of everything in the cannabis. Some collectives test and some don't. Sometimes it looks like they don't know what they're doing based on the diversity of results. Especially CBD, LOL, no disrespect intended towards the attempts. You can have it tested by somebody who knows what they're doing but for the flowers I think it's a waste of money unless you're growing a low THC and high CBD strain. These 'grows' are organic so that takes care of toxins if everything went swimmingly. Mold can be a problem but preventing exposure to mold is a serious part of the grow. What I'm saying is an organic grow, by an experienced farmer, should result in medical grade cannabis and the flowers should fall into a fairly tight range of component potency for each component of cannabis. Edibles and concentrates are a different story since you can decide how strong the edibles and concentrates are going to be. Concentrates are usually 4 to 5 times stronger. IE: concentrated on purpose. So as Fraggle Rocker advised be careful and ask what the concentration is for what you're going to consume. Then make a really conservative first dose. 'Without seed' is really potent cannabis. The danger to the uninitiated is in the concentration. Some information on components and testing.

This is inevitably the case when the shit-for-brains government moves a popular product out of the regulated national economy into the unregulated black market. The second-order effects of prohibition are inevitably worse than the problems caused by the drugs themselves. My parents lived in Chicago during Prohibition and saw the same thing:
    • Prices rise because only criminals are willing to participate in the market. They are greedy and selfish, and in addition it's reasonable to charge a premium because of the risk they're taking.
    • Dissatisfied buyers and sellers can't take their disputes to the courts, so they settle them in the streets with guns. There were neighborhoods in Chicago where people simply did not go outdoors at night. Today the U.S. government has managed to offload its "war on drugs" to Mexico, where tens of thousands of citizens have died in the crossfire. Uruguay is the first nation in the Western Hemisphere to completely decriminalize all drugs, and their death toll from gang-related shootings has dropped to ZERO.
    • There's so much money in the business that the criminals simply bribe the police, district attorneys, judges, and other government officials, corrupting the entire civil infrastructure.
    • Children are recruited as runners because they're more difficult to capture and more likely to be treated leniently by the court system.
    • Children notice gangsters living in luxury while their hard-working parents struggle to put food on the table. (This was the Depression, after all.) So they make an early decision regarding their career choice.
    • The industry is not regulated so manufacturing errors are common. Many people were blinded and even killed by whiskey contaminated with wood alcohol, just as today many people die from accidental drug overdoses due to poor quality control.
    • Americans are not an authority-loving people like the British, Germans or Japanese. When something is outlawed we automatically want more of it. My mother lamented that the worst thing about Prohibition was that WOMEN started going to taverns--and never stopped!

    within the past year?
I read an article about legalized pot. The author commented that the taxing bodies were so greedy for revenue that they made the legal pot more expensive than the street pot, (kinda wishing I could remember more of the darned article).
