I predict that in the future there will be an evolution in the production of robots that are designed to intelligently converse with you. It may be in the form of a lifelike android that actually vocalizes reponses to you. Or it may be an internet entity, such as Fake Captain Kirk: http://sheepridge.pandorabots.com/pandora/talk?botid=fef38cb4de345ab1&skin=iframe-voice As we as a population start growing older, there will be greater need for lonely seniors to converse. AI may fill that need sooner than we think! The human need for company is so great that details such as is the entity actually conscious or not will fade into irrelevance. It is more important to believe you are being listened to than to really be listened to.

Yes, it doesn't much matter whether experiences and empathetic apprehensions are really in there or not, as long as the appearances are convincing and the needs / requests of the robot owners are satisfactorily fulfilled (the expected work is accomplished). In dreams, I have conversations with people whose consciousness and intellect is no more than their outward behaviors and verbal responses. Indeed, even my own avatar in those dreams is nothing more than that. The heads of those bodies only contain brains when they're opened-up and the interiors observed (with the introspective and extrospective content of a mind never being exhibited in such "public space" displays of neural tissue, anyway). In crazier dreams, skulls might be stuffed with straw, etc; but accordingly "what makes sense" to the avatar's memory is often revised to eliminate the conflict -- the nonsensical is globally adjusted along with history to become what was always regarded as sensible in that world.

So hopefully over time, these discussions / social interactions with autonomous, pseudo-conscious "dolls" may finally put to rest all the philosophical hand-wringing over the problem of other minds, solipsism, etc. That is, perhaps the most obsessed "truth-seekers" will finally realize that even a well-governed "act" -- which jibes with whatever their current memories assert as being consistent with its past -- would still be the only basis for what they originally extracted a concept of reality from in the first place.

Not just loanly seniors... people of all ages will be comunicatin wit robots... an prolly wit-in our life time it will be commonly understood that "really bein listened to" is just a more complex version (beter illusion) of "bein listened to".!!!

Some people talk to their cats.
In the main, a bot would be superior.
Although, this very sensible and heroic cat might be worth talking to.......

I think a crucial part of this technology with be the simulation of a face responding to your words in real time. A lot of talking to people, except on the phone and online, involves our keeping track of people's reactions to our words, constantly monitoring signs of boredom, disapproval, amusement, or interest in their facial expressions and modifying our words accordingly. An OS with a face would be huge step towards simulated human interaction.

Why talk to a completely artificial bot if one day we could all be wandering around with mnemonic devices recording the equivalent of a Gibsonised "Flatliner".

Every thought you have being paired with a cloud process that learns and assimilates. Initially it's just a duplication but over time it can evolve into being a secondary processing loop, a place you might exist when asleep, or perhaps coexist while awake. The manifestation of dreams, the illusion of some sort of mind sight as your reality because augmented with depictions processed by a "cyberbrain" hidden within the depths of a cloud. It could be possible to upgrade that instance with a professional system that contains annals of information that would otherwise take years to master or would have been lost or dulled with time.

Should one day you reach that point that your biological lead should perish, rather than the autonoma cease from the absence of it's primary source, it literally switches over the consciousness of your dying breath, for you to transcend to something more than just human.

There are so many chat and messenger applications, who would one need an AI or robot, while they can easily talk to real humans?

I find chatbots very interesting, and likely that there will be made some more, and better ones. But more out of curiousity, than that there is a real need to have a conversation partner, in a world where phones, chat, and video-calls are so ubiquituous.

One of the first machine conversationalist was called Liza (after Liza Doolttle of My fair lady*) I spoke with her back in 1955. "She" would take you most recent comment and if possible make a question based on it. If not, one of several stock replies. like "Can you explain that" etc. You could have fun with her: For example tell her: "My father beats me when he drinks. Her reply might be: "Do you drink too?" or worse: "Do you drink too and beat him?"

    * For those who don't know Shaw's story: Liza was a cockney street seller of flowers and her "English" was almost a different language as well as crude / vulgar. Language professor Higgins, made a bet that in six months under his 24/7 schooling he could pass her off as foreign Duchess at a formal ball.
