EVERYTHING you've said in this post is just plain nuts! You obviously do NOT understand how a swamp-cooler operates, how normal air conditioning works NOR realize that a fan requires energy from an external source (house wiring) NOR where that energy goes when the fan is running!!!! In short, your whole approach here is nothing short of "magic"!!

Agreed. He doesn't even understand the principles of heat transfer which is clearly taught to EVERY highschool student in America. It's also THE easiest to learn/understand of all the basic physical principles.

Heat transfer would require a temperature change.

But don't let the facts stand in the way of your BS. Your measure of energy happens in your fantasy land, where you can imagine that work happens, even though it doesn't!

Wow! Amazing the ignorance of some people's children!

It's only YOUR ignorance that's showing here. Work is done by virtue of the fan moving the air. (And the fact that heat is created can be verified by simply touching the body of the motor on the fan.)

It would be best if you just backed out of this conversation...

    So no wires?

Fans just spin on their own and move air?

    Maybe you should back out??

Here's an image of a swamp cooler.

Both of the images Russ posted use the cooling effect of expanding gasses to to cool air that's already in the room.

A swamp cooler uses the evaporation of water to cool and humidify the air.

Both of the images Russ posted keep the inside air and the outside air seperated using some kind of working fluid to transfer heat from one to the other.

A swamp cooler takes outside air, cools it, and then blows it inside.

These are quite fundamental differences. Do you simply not grasp them, or are you trolling at this point?

Irony anyone? I'm an HVAC engineer.

Irony is certainly one word for it...

Physicists routinely distinguish between heat and temperature. Heat is energy that moves from a hotter object to a cooler one. Temperature is a property of a particular object or system. To have a heat transfer, you need a temperature difference between two objects. But the temperatures need not change as a result of the transfer. In ordinary systems, we often have large heat reservoirs that are essentially at constant temperature regardless of energy put into or extracted from them.

I have not read this thread entirely. I know my computer isn't a closed system, but the fan broke on my video card. The computer kept shutting down cause of the over heating.

It's the blue smoke that keeps the computer running. When the blue smoke comes out, the computer stops working.

Layman may be Indian: at any rate he has been known to speak of "lakhs". I don't think he is thick or ignorant. I think he is a troll, as he does not respond to points made but instead introduces new wrong-headed notions. This is what trolls do, to annoy people and keep the argument going.

I said my computer wasn't a closed system and that I had not read the entire thread. Why do you think I should be insulted by James' reply? Could I have not elucidated something with three sentences?

The idea that I should have been insulted kinda' hurts. Am I dumb yet again because I didn't "Get it"? I don't know what issue you have with me, but I wish you'd drop it.

By your own admission you hadn't bothered to read the thread. Nevertheless you chose to post something irrelevant and inconsequential about your computer.
It's just yet another, characteristically silly and worthless post from you, which got a beautifully succinct silly answer from James. It made me burst out laughing, so I thought I'd give him some credit for it.

The same thought struck me; It may very well BE the case. <sigh>

I felt the mention of a closed system and my example would make things clearer for Layman.

That was the point of my post.

    :EDIT:

Maybe he's trying to take people for a ride, but it doesn't hurt trying to be nice every once in awhile. In other words: I could have been demeaning to him as well.

I think James was just making a joke related to overheating a computer. I thought it was really pretty funny and it did not even cross my mind that he was directing anything negative towards you.
