Why does it seem like there is no moderation in Physics and Math?

I think it seems that way is because there isn't any moderation of Physics and Math.

The 3 moderators of this forum are AlphaNumeric, Pete and prometheus. As near as I can tell based on their recorded activity, none of them have even posted or been on the site in all of 2014!?! James Rs last post is 26 March 2014. The last time he banned anyone was in February.

Not sure what is going on but this is really disappointing and makes me wonder what that means about the health of sciforums.:bawl:

    What's the deal?

Losing An and Prom was a severe blow to the physics and math threads. Both young men who are starting careers. Both have doctorates in physics. I think it would be important for 'any moderator' to be well versed in the subject matter. I'm not going to say much about the others except they haven't convinced me they have a strong knowledge base associated with anything. It was only a month ago that JamesR told me to make any complaints I might have in the future to Alphanumeric. LOL. That doesn't bode well for the future when you're referred to moderation that doesn't exist. In my estimation the leadership is somewhat lacking. Ever since the first day I participated in a physic forum [The Hawking forum] I've been scratching my head 'why am I doing this'. Still haven't figured it out. I have but revealing the answer would be embarrassing. LOL.

You certainly have more information on what is going than I. I only wish the information you have was more encouraging for the future of sciforums.

So AlphaNumeric and prometeus left to persue careers in their chosen fields and have a life of their own. How inconsiderate of them!

The main issue from where I sit is the number of alternative theory threads that have been posted here, obviously to gain some sort of prestige.
They would in reality even have difficulty fitting in the "alternative theory" forum, and obviously are more suited to pseudoscience or cesspool.
Let's hope that this thread rings a bell or two!

I don't know what the actual situation is other than neither of them post here anymore. I don't know what has been communicated? Interesting enough [for me] AN read Farsight the riot act his last two day return over than same nonsense. He told him to only post in the alternative threads until he learns how to actually do some real analysis. I can't keep from cracking up. My computers bouncing in my lap. We have several people posting here who, I think, have what's important in spades. You and I are not one of them. LOL.

BTW the physics and math threads had a great moderator in Ben the Man. Another doctorate in physics. He left right after I joined. What he did is announce he was leaving and why. He was making a career change. At that time we had two doctorates and Prom soon to get his doctorate. More power to these men. I especially like the way Ben the Man concluded his business. It makes a real difference but sometimes you need to learn that when you're young. Nobody has doctorate in life.

This is just my observation but I thought AN really enjoyed posting in the 'crank sections' brow beating knuckleheads into submission. At least in my eyes. You should read some of his posts to Sylwester. I don't think he ever banned anybody? They felt banned after being put in his buzz saw. Moderation was incoherent then [as now] but the knowledge base and personality of moderators kept the noise down. Probably lots of archived posts of AN brow beating Reiku. Never looked.

    @origin,

Why did you post this topic in the Physics and Math forum when it would have been best posted in the Open Government section?
Dare I suggest that you are taunting the moderators with a deliberate provocation?

    A relevant thread:
Declining forum membership 70,000 to 30000
    http://www.sciforums.com/showthread.php?114745-The-reason-for-the-decline-in-forum-membership-anyone&highlight=membership

Why the obvious contradiction in the OP?
    Compare:
then you go on to write:
and combined as originally posted by origin:
I would also like to suggest that since the creation of the Alternative Theories sub fora, the heat has gone out of the Physics and Math section and certain moderators and posters could not dabble in net blood sports like they used to.

No I am not taunting anyone. This is of interest to the people on the math and physics forum so that is why I posted it here.

I named the 3 moderators and then stated that they have not posted this year. I went on to state that James R has not posted since March. Sorry if that over taxed you.

Net blood sport? Have I mentioned that you are extremely odd sometimes?

I'm of the belief that all 3 of those moderators are still here.

    James R. too!

Fine, I'll do it. The only thing I know about physics is that Alfred Einstein invented it in the 60s, and I'm writing an argument for why 2+2 = 9, but I have a bad temper and no filter, so which appears to be the sole prerequisite. Now bow before me or be banned permanently!

Let Reiku be the sole mod...

C'mon, it would be friggin' hilarious.

Hey, I spend very little time in physics and maths... But, if he was the sole mod, I'd read every friggin' post. I love comedy.

I try to moderate P&M where and when I can, but I don't receive reported post reports so unless people PM me there's nothing I can do and I can't close/move/delete threads.

I've reported many posts here without noticing any moderator actions taken in direct connection, although eventually someone usually shows up to deal with the mess. Maybe the people reading my reports feel I'm too much of a participant in the fray to single out the cranks, or else they feel too bogged down with something else to bother. Is there any possibility of setting up a system or procedure so that when someone reports "crank alert!" and it's regarding a known sock-puppet or an obvious/frequent bullshitter posting pseudoscience in the wrong section, the offending poster gets expeditiously banned or the offending thread gets moved to alt-sci/cesspool?

For the rest of us dealing with these trolls, I've found that the simplest and most straight-forward approach is to simply demand that they put forth concrete models mathematically describing the phenomena they claim to explain and showing how their predictions beat the mainstream predictions. Since none of the cranks posting here know any math or science (which is why in their ignorance they think they have something brilliant worth sharing in the first place), it's a pretty quick way to expose them and push them off to the sidelines until a moderator eventually scoops up their droppings.

CptBork, the thing is, only the listed moderators get the actual reports - if none of them are active, nobody ends up seeing the reports unfortunately (well, the supermods maybe?)
