I question you both , Grumpy and pad You lack the depth of thought towards what time actually is , time is about dynamics Now , why does the baby develop ?
Your post #259 is so lacking depth of the babies development , No other question needs to be asked Why does the baby develop ? Delve into the cell biology of the child , is that a big enough hint for you ?
 You are in the wrong ball park. If it wasn't for time, there would be no cell biology, no baby, no Earth, no solar system, no Universe/space/time, and no BB.
Not only does river believe anything he wants to believe, but he disbelieves anything he doesn't like.
What do you mean "time by itself"? Do you have a concept of space and time existing, but NO OBJECTS? No light? No mass? I think you are conceiving of an impossibility in your mind. Objects exist. There is no possibility of objects not existing.
Well, since matter exists in our universe I guess it is a moot point. edit to add: after the big bang before the existence of matter there was energy, which also produces a gravitational field so again the point is moot. Before the big bang I guess there was no energy or mass so no time - I can live with that.
Ok. There has always been matter and/or energy in our universe so there has always been time in the context of GR.
Oh for crying out loud, are you yet another incarnation of rekui? He let's try the Rekui test. Are you the same person as the poster Rekui who was banned?

Legolongolas Are you another who is of the opinion that defining something has anything at all to do with that something's existence? Can you not tell the difference between measurement and existence? Yes, we use events(matter, energy, movement, acceleration)to DEFINE time, but the time exists whether it is possible to detect and define it or not. In fact time is so fundamental that it is part of the spacetime manifold that is our Universe. Time is, events might be(the Universe is mostly empty spacetime). We need events to measure, time does not need events to continue to pass. In fact it passes at it's maximum rate in the ABSENCE of events(it is the least dilated under those conditions, which are never absolute, so no absolute maximum is possible). Don't make the mistake of thinking measuring something causes it's existence. The map(the measurement)is not the thing being measured(time), it is only a construct that describes the reality. No, time is emergent from the Big Bang, in the form of spacetime. Matter affects time, as does speed and acceleration(it affects space as well), so they are all interconnected. But time for events to occur within and space where those events occur exist independently of whether they currently have events occurring within that spacetime. The only thing that emerges due to events is our ability to measure time, not it's existence. GrumpyPlease Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
