Actually even in the case of transcendence as portrayed in the movie, without the Internet what could it possibly amount to? Nothing says you have to plug the machine into the Internet. A stand alone machine wouldn't be able to do much no mater how intelligent it was.

Also, I agree with you about humans being far more dangerous than the machines will ever be.

Hitler was runnin on a program based on genes an environment... an dependin on the program... a sentient machine coud be jus as sick/dangerous as a human.!!!

Due to goverments competition for the best weapon... such computers will make use of the internet in a hartbeat.!!!

I just found out that Computers can be conscious and have spirits....that is amazing...In about 300 years, I could make sure that happens provided we develop organic computers....thanks...

    Are "spirits" organic.???

Perhaps...it connects to the energy state of being out side of the material existence...that means, if the system dies...the spirit/soul can live on in a different field of existence....what it is I have no idea...Buddhism has some info...it is more meta physical and I have no idea.

It is similar to Volons Ships in Babylon 5...am am sure there are other SF books that discusses it...just an idea...that is all...

We need to think about how to build Organic Computers here at SF....thank you...

    No.

The reason is, is because it isn't about having ''enough'' computations, it's about how those computations are configured. There will always be something unique about the configuration about carbon-based brain networks which we probably will never be able to duplicate in any sense for a very very long time from now. Until we know this ''code'' to consciousness, then we might be able to manipulate machine to sentient.

Biochemistry? You may want to watch this whole series of NOVA. Once we know how we think, we can build it.

Michau Kaku 'Future of the Mind' relates level of consciousness to the number of feedback loops.

My earlier example of a mousetrap fails because nothing about it detects that it has killed a mouse, other than a tripped lever.
Allow it to reset itself after it is tripped, and it becomes conscious (as well as more deadly).

Think you are smarter or more conscious than a mouse trap?

Make it into a self-resetting bear trap that also has a sophisticated cloaking technology. Now who's the smarty-pants?

Thread is long, so may have already said:
We will never know. Only the thing its self knows. You can tell me that you are conscious, but I can not be certain that is true. Perhaps only I am conscious.

Only if the builders give them that ability. A machine with no means of movement isn't going to do much. no matter how conscious it is.

I would have to disagree with you on this point. Humans have only 6 senses, but the machine could have 100's of senses and while the machine itself might be stationary it could easily have remote robots under its control. It could truly become a super being. How disturbing would that be? However, when humans become desperate enough, do to the over whelming problems it is creating for itself, and I'm not going to list all of those problems. But I know that life is going to get very tough for billions of people in the not to distant future. If the machine actually becomes a fact, humans may ask it for help.

People make the error of assuming Consciousness comes about with least resistance and so filing up vast amounts of data offers an advantage.... - no. Consciousness comes about with maximum resistance, friction, pressure and any technology trying to offer advantage and comfort to soften that pressure can only diminish your consciousness.

To me, consciousness is justly about resisting to change, a change that can be external to mind, but also internal. This way, when we think, thus when we take conscience of what is happening in our mind, we would be observing the change that happens in it. Mind is about memories, automatisms, different degrees of feelings, and imagination. From those properties, only imagination is about change. When we imagine something, we see, hear or feel something that has already been recorded in our mind, but we can also play with it virtually, making changes to what has been recorded. How do we decide the change that we are going to make to our ideas? If, for instance, we want to rotate a virtual image to the right, how did we chose right instead of left? If we were to program this kind of decision into a robot mind, how would we proceed?
