D'oh! I even read that link, and followed the inline link to the article and assumed it was behind a paywall. :*)

    Mostly just curious.

Surely you have heard the saying about "assume"?!

As I have stated before in my Posts - assumptions and presumptions are, more often than not, impediments to attainment of knowledge and the advancement of science.

I try my best to keep most of my Posts on more or less Layman's Terms - Heck, even you must admit that no matter how many decades one spends neck deep in Science - reading technical papers and publications can still be exceedingly tedious at times!

Again, Trippy, I have to say : the more I learn, the more that I realize that there is so very much more to learn!

    Later, dmoe

Some assumptions are reasonable, supported by evidence, and happen to be correct. It's no big deal.

In the same vein of your earlier "Mostly just curious" to dmoe, Trippy....

Are you in any way trying to give him and others the impression that all mainstream physicists/cosmologists agree with all the current mainstream assumptions and that all these assumptions are supported by evidence that has no other interpretation possible and that all those assumptions and interpretations based on them all "happen to be correct"? If you cannot claim that all same ARE indisputably 'correct', then it IS a "big deal" if mainstream has the BB and all consequential interpretations of evidence all wrong. Yes?

Like you say, "Mostly just curious" about what you meant by that response to dmoe above. Thanks.

I skim-read it (I was at work at the time and haven't really had the opportunity to get back to it to read it in depth). That was a number of days ago, however, from what I recall, I thought it was reasonably well done, I don't recall seeing anything in there that I disagreed with, or for that matter, anything particulary suprising to me, based on my experiences moderating discussion fora (sciforums isn't the only place I have moderated).

It's one of the reasons why I try and take the approach of an educator, and take the approach to dealing with trolls that I do - I generally find it to be the most effective method and I have personally met with success. Success, in this instance, being measure by my ability as a chatter (at the time) to give the troll the rope they needed to get themselves banned without getting warned or banned myself.

It's a hole in the ground. Was there something you actually wanted to ask?

    Well...(interjection)

I'm aware of its use as an interjection.

I was using your interjection to make a pun using an alternative meaning of the word while simultaneously alluding to the fact that the interjection is at once lacking, context, and begs a question, however, because of the lack of context in the first place and the discussion thus far there are several questions that could be implied which leads us to the second sentence. I could have left it at the pun, and in most civil conversations the use of the pun would be enough to imply the expectation of an actual finish to the sentence, and an invitation to continue with the implied train of thought. I would, however, just hate to leave you in the position of actually having to make an assumption or an inference from anything I had said, and so I completed the statement with an indication of my expectations - both that you appeared to have more you wished to say, and the invitation to say it.

Effectively, the use of the pun in conjuction with the direct question is best read as "Well, what?"

Now, were you interjecting for a reason? Did you have something more that you wanted to say? Or should I simply ignore you.

The notion of "trolling" on a discussion forum is actually oxymoronic. Before everyone goes crazy, this is my reasoning -

The simple act of creating a thread means you are trolling. You cast your line (the thread) and wait for responses (bites), members respond. Now if someone responds rudely with something like "you are crazy" that is not a troll.

Say someone make a thread about the planets and he adheres to mainstream science.

Someone responds to the thread and says "well actually what seems so large to us is actually very small...if taken in context" people would be like "wow, he is very intelligent." Then the same responder says (types) "yeah, and in reality we (people) are very tiny. The tallest mountain we have here is actually (and in reality) a tiny mole hill, the largest ocean is only large to us in the same way a puddle is an ocean (in size) to an ant." Is he troll or philosopher?

You see, science and philosophy are forever intertwined.

Look at it this way, millions of people in the world with millions of different ways of looking at things.

As far as anti-science, was Galileo a troll? was the first guy who said "hey...uh...i dont think you should do that" during a medical procedure hundreds of years ago that was later found to be wrong. Was he a troll? I guess so, not to me though.

I think Stoniphi made some good points.

Trippy, as I have stated before : I do not suffer assumptions, nor presumptions - so nothing you do will "leave" me "in the position of actually having to make an assumption or an inference from anything"!

Furthermore, WELL...is ALL I HAVE, WISH or CARE to SAY...nothing more.

    We all make assumptions.

    Cool Beans!

Now back to Posts that are on topic!

Interesting view/perspective, Sylvester, and welcome to SciForums, by the way!
Although I cannot 100% concur - there is no small amount of Logic and a decent amount of common sense in your Post.

Galileo did not have the current scientific methodolgy and peer review to support his science....
The church ran things holus bolus in that era, and any science that cast doubt on an Earth centric God fearing/created Universe, with us as its prime beings was castigated.
