This thread is especialy for current mods an people who have been mods... an anybody elses 2 cents worth.!!!

Im givin serous consideration to applyin for a moderator job... but first i want to gather information to make sure it would be a good fit for me.!!!

One thang i woud like to know is... what are some of the most gratifying parts of the job.???

    Special note to current mods:::

In case the moderation rules become mor strict durin the life of this thred... please warn anybody if they break a rule... instead of lockin the thread... thank you in advance.!!!

There is nothing particularly gratifying about it. It is more of an exercise in how much bullshit you can stand.

The good part was giving back to the community. And dropping the hammer on spammers. The bad thing is you can never please everyone. It's especially difficult to have to read everything. As a mere member, I avoid reading most of it. And it's impossible to be totally impartial. The rules are both too vague and too strict to enforce in an objective way.

Hmmm... good stuff to thank about... an i also wooud like to give back to the community/make Sciforums more enjoyable.!!!

To begin wit... its a no brainer that ALL moderation shoud be done wit total respect... in other words... no whinin that its to hard to always be respectful in moderation duties... an that requires people like me who can behave in an adult fashion an not use ther position for ego trips.!!!

I think you might be good at it, but it's not for everyone. It's a bunch of work for very little reward and lots of complaints.

The rules don't apply to you. I'd call that a benefit.

For me it is more of an exercise in understanding and broadening my own horizons - the power that comes with the responsibility requires me to be able to stop the knee-jerk reactions and be able to see things from perspectives I wouldn't normally consider.

To be able to take so much and receive so little isn't a job I'd enjoy for very long. There are also other things to do with time other than read, read, read every thread that comes along. I don't envy those mods but thank them for their valuable time they put in here.

    Admirable goals... indeed.!!!

I dont see the mod position as "power"... but as a necessity to guide the forum toward an agreed upon goal.!!!
The more respectable a mod is in ther duties... the less moderation woud be needed.!!!
I ran a forum for about 3 years an never had a desire to censor speech... an never baned anyone... i jus wanted a place avalible for discussion... an as far as science is concerned... at least 4 people was convienced (wit the help of Yazata, CC an MR)... that the moon does in fact rotate on its own axis

One thing to remember is that each mod only works on certain sub-forums. Myself, I moderate Sci-Fi and Fantasy (a largely quiet forum) and assist with the general forums and Pseudoscience. Supermods and Admins can moderate all forums with abilities, and all moderators are capable and allowed to issue infractions/warnings in all forums should they see the need, but generally it gets reported back to that sub-forums moderator. It isn't as time consuming as you would think... normally anyway lol.

A decent person wouldn't take advantage of it in the first place.

One of the first things you should consider before taking a moderator position is whether or not your "style" of moderation is a good fit with the character of the forum. Never go in thinking that you are going to "fix" the present moderation. If your ideas of what makes a "better forum" doesn't mesh with that of the owner's/admin's, this will not be a good marriage.

Fantastic advice... an i woudnt consider the job unless the new forum changes include that mods will be totally respectful when performin mod duties.!!!

Also... no dirty laundry from the "mod forum" bein aired in public.!!!
