    Maybe....But pessimism never achieved anything.
What we need is the effort.

That's the part that is Important. On the job Experience to facilitate further missions, with the minimization of the dangers involved.

it sure beats digging up the amazon for gold. but, there are lots of hurdles. we should work with russia and china on this. how much energy would it take to capture a near-earth asteroid and place it in an accessible earth orbit? lots of thruster fuel, i believe.

i was thinking more along the lines of sending colonies initially to the asteroids, to avoid the gravity well of mars/moon. of course, the proximity of the moon is enticing.

Of course! I mean why dig up the only home we have if it can be possible to get unlimited supplies of what we want, off Earth.

Your other point is also well taken.

Ah...yes, of course, just a "Simple error"! Nothing to fret about, just a "Simple error"!

    You are right, of course.

Anyway, a "Simple error" like failing to check ones Post prior to Posting is just a "Simple error".

I wonder if a "Simple error" could ever prove to be catastrophic on a "One way Mars trip"?

Again, you are right, of course. It would not be a paddoboy Post, without your prerequisite "name- calling".

As far as your self-proclaimed "better nature" or ability to "understand" anything...well...whatever you say, because...

Once again, you are right of course - after all you mis-stated that you agreed with me in your earlier Post, and you could never agree with an...

Once again, please feel free to accept "as if you care" in response to the ^^above quoted^^!

Also, once again, you are right, of course.

    Stryder, very intelligent points.

I hope you do not mind if I express that I fully concur with all that you Posted.

Of course! Like Albert, I can and do recognise my mistakes...It's a shame that your mistakes and obsessions with mine, sends you into somewhat of a frenzy. Not good when your in hospital.

And of course we are not on a trip to Mars...yet!

The ISS has been continually manned everyday for the past 11 years.

And again, as I have said previously, robotics will always go hand in glove with the exploration of the solar system and beyond.
There will always be places where we just cannot go...surface of Venus for instance.

I find it laughable that you think that you could "send" anyone "into somewhat of a frenzy".

But, it has been said that : "laughter is the best medicine"!

    You are right, of course.

BTW, speaking of "silly...childish antics", what would you call :

I'll let our peers on the forum be the judge, OK?

    Now back on track.....

As further tests are undertaken, consisting of mental and physical challenges, teams from different regions will be pitted against each other until 40 with the "Right Stuff" are sorted, programmed about 2015.
    .
These remaining Mars colony candidates will then embark on a seven-year training odyssey that, in partnership with spaceship builder SpaceX, will see the first team of four Mars “settlers” blast off in 2023.

The goal is to establish a thriving, permanent human colony on the Red Planet with new missions running through the middle of this century.

As I said earlier in the piece, although I am somewhat apprehensive, I hope that they at least make a go of it.
And even if failure occurs, it will just be the start of attempting manned Mars landings, and will serve to fan the flames in such efforts.
I'm sure all here wish them the best.

I am not exactly sure what you are trying to express when you use the phrase : "hand in glove".
In the U.S., the "hand in glove" phrase most often means that wherever a "glove" goes in a "hand in glove" relationship, the "hand" goes right along with it.

If I understand the "logic?!" that you are applying - and I repeat, IF - then you may not or must not be aware of the Soviet "Venera" Program.

This would seem to indicate that at least one of the two ^^above quoted^^ statements to be illogical.
However, you paddoboy, made them both, so...

    You are right, of course.

Of course so far in this age of space exploration, the vast majority of exploratory craft have been robotic. The Venera probes, the Mercury Messenger probes, the Martian robotic craft, New Horizon, Cassini/Huygen probe, Galileo and the Voyagers and Pioneers....All are gathering vast amounts of knowledge about the origins and nature of the solar system, and in most cases preparing the way for eventual manned excursions.

Obviously [well obviously to most] there are places where manned landings are highly Improbable or Impossible, such as Jupiter, Saturn, Io, Venus etc
Again, like a hand in a glove, our robotic friends will be at the fore.

Even when manned excursions are the norm, we will still have a place for such robotic craft.
As I did say previously, I would never underestimate the Importance of robotic craft.

    Yes, again I am.

    DEFINITION:
work hand in glove with somebody/something
to do something in close combination with someone or something else The computer chips are designed to work hand in glove with this new microprocessor.
Usage notes: sometimes used in the form go hand in glove (to be closely related): Researchers believe that mental well-being and physical strength go hand in glove.

    - @paddopboy

    Thanks for the response.

Figured it would be a failure to comprehend/understand on my part, as usual, because...well...you know!

Well, you could have a colony by 2023 - but it would be a while before it was self-sustaining. Early colonists will rely fairly heavily on resupply from Earth. As the colony becomes more self-sufficient presumably the resupply could taper off and be restricted to essentials (vitamins, tools, drugs, IC's etc.)
There have been several projects run in the deserts that attempt to simulate as closely as possible a Mars mission - no going outside without a suit, no help from anyone else etc. And of course there is the ISS which has given us decades of experience.

Agreed that the Moon is more hostile but 1) there's not all that much utility to a colony on the moon and 2) ANY rescue will have to be in-place (i.e. an Earth return vehicle.) On the scale of disasters there are almost no disasters that will soon be deadly, but will let everyone wait a week to two months for rescue.

Good ideas, and even the simpler plans (Mars Direct) involves autonomous robots to do early work like making fuel for the ERV.

That would work. Or a tablet with a big central hard drive.

You can find the answers to your questions here: EDIT i am unable to post links but check out Mars Ones website..
(Apologies that is just a link to their website. But you can find all that out and more, there and on the MO specific forums)

    (etc added)

I suggest postponing judgement until you have more information.

The technology exists for this mission i am lead to believe. I'm not qualified to defend that position. The feasibility is in question but the people involved seem confidant.

The plan is to send four people first, and then four more every couple of years. There is allot of criticism about sustainability. But if the individuals wish to go, and the investors wish to invest, i don't see the problem. We are not in control of their lives or money and potentially great things can come from it.

The cost is being covered by private investors who have said 'if public interest can be gained then cost is not an issue'. They intend to turn a profit from a reality TV show. They have laid out a time-frame, estimated costs and are happy they will get a return. The same investors could just as easily invest their money in medicine true. Or they could invest in tobacco or weapon production.

Morally speaking it isn't the most sinister way to spend our resources. Much better than super-cars, plastic forks and disposable lighters no? We squander most of our resources and this is one of the better uses i have heard. And as private investors they aren't accountable to you or I. I suspect if they don't invest in Mars One they will invest in a new Big Brother meets X-factor show. I know which one i would prefer.

How do you qualify that? Does it have to return a specific amount of cultural, physical, fiscal or intellectual wealth within a certain time frame? If the investors make a 10% profit over 15 years and the volunteers enjoy it, is that acceptable to you?

I would say the reason to do it is for knowledge. Progress. Exploration. Pushing our boundaries. Also morale and a reminder to aspire for greatness. Mankind could do with some of that. The potential gain in knowledge is incalculable and invaluable.

As for it being too risky and a waste of life... if you ever see a man holding a giant pair of wings saying 'i'm going to jump off this cliff and fly!!'... Don't call him mad and tell him to stop because you're worried for his safety. Instead ask him to take notes as he falls so we can build on the knowledge base he is providing.
