I would like to know exactly which of you evolutionists has witnessed this transformation over billions of years?! This THEORY cannot be accepted as fact, or you simply do not understand it!

We have indisputable evidence for evolution from TWO quite unrelated sciences: paleontology and genetics.

No one has ever seen a quark or a boson either. Do you also deny their existence?

Please crawl back under your rock in Kentucky.

MODERATOR: Please move this lunacy to the "Denial of Evolution" thread in the Biology subforum.

Then why do we sleep huh? Surely a sleeping animal is the easiest prey, but this has not 'devolved.'

So where do you think humans came from??

Evolution involves compromise and cobbled together solutions. Indeed the lack of perfection in life forms is a powerful argument against an omnipotent creator, or in favour of one who is incompetent, or has a distorted sense of humour. (Consider the human reproductive system. Who in their right mind would run a waste disposal conduit through a recreational area?)

We do not yet fully understand why we sleep, though I recall reading just the other day of research suggesting the importance of clearing the brain of toxins. If correct, then there is your compromise. Either face brain 'meltdown' from toxins, or take a small risk you may be attacked in your sleep.

However evolution as provided many solutions to that problem. Some animals sleep in burrows for safety, or up in trees. Other animals rely on excellent camouflage. Lots of them live in herds and so have the benefit of numbers. Or, if you are top predator, you don't need to worry about it at all. Dolphins sleep with one half of their brain at a time. Long distance migrating birds sleep while flying in bursts of a few seconds. All of these solutions are the product of evolution. So there is no need for sleep to 'devolve'.

The evidence indicates very clearly that we evolved from ape like ancestors. However, I find this obsession with human evolution rather boring. The real paleontological evidence for evolution resides in the invertebrate fossils, such as trilobites, brachiopods, ammonites, graptolites, echinoderms, etc. Why do you focus on humans? Isn't that rather arrogant?

In our case we're a gregarious species that lives in social colonies of different chronotypes, which combined with sleeping disorders virtually gaurantees that there is at least one person awake at any given time.

A sleeping animals doesn't move much and can hide from predators. It also conserves energy. The benefits of a complex brain that requires sleep is enough of an advantage to keep it.

You and I evolved from filthy monkey men.

Here's a list of organisms that have evolved into new species as we have watched:

    Evening Primrose (Oenothera gigas)
    Kew Primrose (Primula kewensis)
    Raphanobrassica
    Hemp Nettle (Galeopsis tetrahit)
    Madia citrigracilis
    Brassica
    Maidenhair Fern (Adiantum pedatum)
    Woodsia Fern (Woodsia abbeae)
    Stephanomeira malheurensis
    Yellow Monkey Flower (Mimulus guttatus)
    Fruit fly (Drosophila paulistorum)

Quite obviously you don't understand it or you wouldn't open by brandishing ignorance as a tool that disproves science. Presumably you failed in school and have resorted to being informed by your religion. And I assume you are a sock puppet of several similar personas posting in the science threads.

Your first brain fart was that evolution takes billions of years. No, it takes an instant. All of evolutionary history unfolded over billions of years, which is an entirely different argument, and useless to support your attacks on science. Those billions of years comprise zillions of such instants.

There is no time boundary to any single episode that constitutes evolution. But it's foolish to pretend to believe, or profoundly illiterate to assert, that the pathogens that carry common infectious disease are not clinically observed proof of evolution in short time spans. It's also all of that, plus profoundly myopic, to claim that any theory dealing with processes that span the life of one observer are invalidated by the absence of one person's continuous personal observation. Presumably you believe God created the Grand Canyon rather than it's obvious creation from water and ice. No one has actually observed the Grand Canyon being cut by water and ice but only a dunce would propose that "the theory of the Grand Canyon's formation cannot be accepted as fact, or that geologists simply don't understand geology."

I suppose that works for you if you're a fundamentalist. But this is not ICR and we're not here to pander to superstitious diatribe.

How about all the antibiotic-resistant bacteria? In this case it would be appropriate to say that they evolved into new species as we watched helplessly.

There were some good bits, but yeah, it was a little slow moving. Could have used some editing.

The theory of evolution explains the fact of evolution. A theory doesn't magically "become" a fact.

"Devolved" and "evolved" are the same thing. The same mechanism works in both directions.

Please define what you mean by "witness", because it seems to me that there is very little in science that is directly witnessed, under a definition that excludes evolution.

Agreed: clearly, Matthew doesn't know what a "theory" is.

Let me answer you as a layman....
I really see your inference as arrogant and ignorant.
Just because we do not see evolution taking place immediatley before your eyes does not mean it isn't taking place.

The first thing you should do to alleviate that ignorance, is google what a scientific theory really is, and why it is called a theory.
Evolution is a fact, but the exact methodology is not exactly known.
It remains a scientific theory, because as science progresses, as science learns more, as we conquer space and achieve off Earth habitats, we will learn more and more, and the theory of evolution will need " tinkering" and some modification......A car remains a car and has since the first model, but it has undergone plenty of changes and tinkering as we gain more technologies and improve our understandings etc.
The same goes for the BB theory, and any other scientific theory.

Religion on the other hand...need I say more?

Lots of gobbledeegook, but you weren't asking for that. You were asking for witnesses. Given who's responded so far, it's all downhill from here.

So cliche, too. When H. Homo sapiens evolved, I was like, "Of course it's a species of sentient super-apes."
