Here's a quick way to experience enlightenment:
    1. Smoke some weed (it's legal in Washington State!)
    2. Meditate; specifically, focus on becoming aware. Become awareness.

If you are a male and your view on sex completely changes, then you experienced enlightenment. I'm hoping the change of viewpoint on sex doesn't last forever. It's starting to go away, kind of.

But you're not happy. What's wrong with your philosophy?

    Hi Lakon,
You're a good guy. But let me show you an example of someone who thinks that religious/spiritual experiences are stupid.

I'm not calling the experience stupid, I'm objecting to a certain lack of humility about it, which can seem to be an expression of ego. It's been my experience that enlightenment is far more interesting than simply "something that makes you happy". There is a lot of foolishness surrounding it, a mystique, if you will.

Everything you say is true. I like the mystique quality of it. I don't care for the increasingly crazy ideas that are far from elegance and beauty. I think that New Age crystals release a large amount of neurochemicals (that's the way it feels). It actually come in handy with problem solving and understanding increasingly complicated problems.

I was going to say something about that. We as humans are subject to all sorts of mystical experiences, but I don't think these are the same as enlightenment, which I feel is when our delusions are erased. Perhaps using such crude language as I did was counterproductive. We don't float off to a mystical realm where all questions are answered, and we get wondrous powers, it's more like suddenly realizing all we have assumed previously was wrong. Like we have been looking for our hat only to see that it's been on our head the whole time. So how is that something to be showing off? It just means that now we realize those were delusions, and we are working with a clean slate. Others have described it as a literal death.

    Spidergoat,
I wish there were more people on this forum who had your quality of consciousness. If there were more people like you, wegs, quantum quack, it would be fun to come here.

In terms of "realizing that your hat is on your head", I think it really depends upon how you direct these "mystical and wondrous powers". I don't think the physics community has any cognizance that figuring out how the speed of light is enforced might lead to amazing new technologies. I suppose that science has already snatched down all of the "low hanging fruit". But they have an attitude about it and insist that there is no unreachable fruit. Atheist physicists insist the world is a certain way when there is 5 times more mass in the universe than what is in the standard model (dark matter), they don't know where the big bang came from, they don't know how the laws of physics are created or enforced, they don't know the "recipe for consciousness", yet they are 100% certain there is no afterlife and no spirits. It is my opinion that Atherism and scientism eventually lead to a quality of conscousness very similar to what Q has demonstrated. It is the kind of conscousness where atheists live off the happiness of others by disparaging and destroying other people's happiness, because because like Q cannot create their own happiness.

Well I don't think enlightenment is about happiness. In some ways we have too much happiness. You have to have some discontentment with the way things are to even consider something new. There are stories about zen practitioners staring at a wall for years or cutting off their own arm, not that I would recommend that. It's not about how everything in science is wrong, just the assumptions we make about the nature of consciousness. The mind is just a construct our brain creates to help up process information. Although this was a huge evolutionary step in terms of solving problems, it can also become a neurosis. Zen is like an inoculation against taking our minds and their desires so seriously. You are not your mind.

I do admire Q in this sense, he has no appetite for bullshit.

It didn't go away for me. I think it is a tyranny of nature and a waste of life energy.

Sex drive is a waste of life energy? How draconian. I always thought it was a sign of a healthy body and mind.

I don't feel like I have too much happiness. I feel like I have too many stressors.

I don't understand how zen practioners cutting off their arm fits into the consversation. Other than the simple wisdom that one should do something with their life. I can think of lots of positive things to do with one's life, like working for a living, taking up martial arts, cleaning one's house, socializing.
I think that Q throws the baby out with the bathwater and is a terrible role model. For example, someone like Q calls things he doesn't like shit. This is what it sounds like from a different point of view.

    Atheism is SHIT!

You seem at peace, elte. Always shines through your posts. If you wish to be in a relationship or not, you seem to have achieved a sense of balance and peace. (from what I've seen of your postings here)

You have a calming effect, I think.

It's little wonder when one lives life in constant delusion, void of reality.

    Got any evidence?
