People often wonder why, if God is so good, why then did He allow such an atrocity to occur such as 9/11. Not to mention the Holocaust at Aushwitz an other places. It just does't make any sense at all. But if our consciousness survives death of the body then it all makes some kind of a sense. Our (I believe) life and death means something in the grand scheme of things even though a loved ones death is a personal tragedy and none of the above statements would make it feel OK. However if we, after a time, return to the physical plane in a new body we have the chance to rectify mistakes from the past life, even though we may not have a clue as to what we are supposed to accomplish here.
I must point out that these are my beliefs, shared by a lot of other people, but I would like to have your feedback on the above, even from those who support these beliefs.
    All the best

    Rex

There is probably no life after we die.

My best guess is that after we die we are returning to the same very peaceful place we were in before we were born.

Were we alive before we were born? Do we remember anything from the time before we were born? No we do not remember anything from that time before we weren't alive!

So if there wasn't life before we were born then why should there be life after we die?

It still won't make sense, because we are [supposedly] being judged on far too many situations over which we have no control. Lives begin, unfold, are influenced by and end too arbitrarily.
And that's just the human ones! Who accounts for the suffering of otters?

Ever thought of it this way? Maybe God doesnt interfere in this world because he would have to break the very laws of physics he created, and u cant create a system and just disrupt it when you please and expect everything to be fine. But what he can do is give you a wonderful afterlife after your soul comes out of the physical universe which is bound with laws.

The problem with the concept of an after life in my opinion, is it causes many people who believe in that concept, to focus on it more than the here and now. Living this life in hopes of something "better." Why does the idea of an "after life" make this life, "worth it?"

You were a cocoon, and you have gone through metamorphosis on sciforum and now you are a butterfly.
Now tell me do you really believe that there is no afterlife ? If you do how positive you are ? Or will you be negative oall the tine and preach against in order to convince your self ?

From a purely DNA probability perspective:
Say in the year 1040 AD a man, let's call him Jim lived and had the DNA of code of
    1237689356-jkl-p90908721

[just as an example code ok?]
Say 1000 years later a guy called Bob is borne with exactly the same DNA code:

    1237689356-jkl-p90908721

    Questions:

    Are they the same person?
For all intents and purposes Bob is a naturally derived, DNA clone of Jim.

Would Bob have DNA memories of Jim's life?
Would Bob's life be influenced by hidden memories from Jim's life?
Could Bob every now and then have flash backs and strange dreams, indicating past life regression that he can not explain?

Note: This concept was explored by the Console video game: Assassin Creed. ~ by Ubisoft
Where by a modern man experiences life as his ancestors.

    re: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assassin%27s_Creed

edit: There probably is a scientific field of inquiry but I have no idea what it would be called..

The probability of natural generational cloning - with in the DNA strand lineage

Even when I was into my faith, I never fully believed the whole "heaven and hell" construct. I don't know with certainty that an after life doesn't exist, but I don't think about it anymore. It is freeing to just not care. If it exists, I will find out about it when I die, I suppose. So...one's eternity hinges upon believing in it to begin with? If I don't believe in it...I go to a horrible place...simply for not believing in it?
But, had I stayed a faithful believer, then eternity exists?

Another "flaw" in the religion paradigm.

So, what is the purpose of having "two lives?"

Let's do a thought experiment. We can borrow from theoretical physics the idea of a quantum foam from which universes are spit forth, like our universe. The laws of physics and physics constants can be thought of as immutable properties (properties that don't change) of our universe. Our universe has a distinct and unique existence no matter what happens inside, no matter what black holes, galaxies, stars, whatever. The universe will live on forever.

But who says that such a quantum foam is obligated to spit out mathematically acceptable universes? Why can't it spit out other kinds of things that live indefinitely, that have certain immutuable properties that make that universe unique. Getting back to my thought experiment, what if such a quantum foam spits out souls, unique immortal souls, one for you, one for me, one for everyone. What then?

I don't think much about the after life , I think about today and how to live a life that projected in the 10 commandments . God will take care the rest

Al things are possible How it was formed and why it was formed , at the present is nothing wrong to praise the creation that was made, it is something wonderful and is not random it has an ordered pattern, and who set the pattern was great spirit.

If we did a thought experiment about time travel, we would discover the grandfather paradox. The grandfather paradox kills time travel and makes it "not possible". What is the grandfather paradox for having a soul? There really is none. It does imply reincarnation, and there are some snags that have to be accounted for. What happens if you have too many lifeforms and a shortage of souls? That's easy to fix, with natural disasters.

But there is one signfiicant problem with having a soul. It's not a mathematical problem or a logic problem. For all of you who thought that your worries would end when you die, that may not be true. There are massive emotional reasons why some people would not want a soul or to survive the death of the physical body. There are massive fears about the afterlife, what does it mean, what do you do, do you need to find a religion? There are massive anxieties about soul survival. There are also fears caused by Christianity.

Atheists are safe for now because souls cannot be proven to exist (because they are not made out of standard model particles). Beyond that, there is no reason why souls cannot exist. Other than anxiety of atheists.

We tend to usually live this moment in hopes of something "better" later anyway.
We go to work, in the hopes that we'll get payed, we go to the dentist in the hopes that later we'll have prettier teeth or at least such that won't hurt, etc. etc. - whatever we do, we hope that something better will come out of it, and we accept it will come later. Whether this "later" means a few seconds, or hours, or days, or years, or lifetimes.

Heres a point if there was an afterlife and God wanted us to follow certain things in this life wouldn't you make it fairly obvious what they are. i mean if i was god which i dont aspire to and i wanted you to follow certain ways and believe in me wouldn't i make it so there's only one religion. If following god like religions say is so important how come there's so many different ones.

After death would it really be that much like this world. would we really be the same physically and mentally just in a different world which has none of the downsides of this one. What happens if after death we become one with god and in that state with god we just experience eternal bliss. If that was the case before we came into life why would we of needed to be able to think see and do things?

Plus what if the whole of creation is just gods attempt to understand himself. i mean since god is eternal and supposodly created the universe but if you where this allmighty been that just happened to exist wouldn't you wonder how you came to be. If you are a being that just exists and can create universes, wouldn't you wonder what your there for, what is your purpose. God knows everything about the universe and what will, is and has happened. but does he truly understand himeself.

One final point if god created us and we are his children what does that mean. does that mean we could eventually become God. is life just a series of stages where each stage brings us closer to godhood. Could that be the purpose of dimensions.

In the end it doesn't matter becuase if there is no after life you wont care. It's like going to sleep and then waking up the next morning exept if there is no afterlife then you just dont wake up.

Considering we have a pretty firm understanding as to the biological processes after death, I would have to say that there is no afterlife. Some will argue that the mind is a separate entity from the body, to which I will retort "Have you ever had a fever? If so, did you not hallucinate?".

on the contrary, the so-called firm understandings of biological processes after death is simply the complete absence of them ... which I guess is easier to register and record than the unfathomable myriad of them that even a fruit fly displays whilst living

The answer there is "No" for a few reasons, first of the materials that a person is comprised of is going to have an entirely different history (unless you are of course using the same building bricks), there is then the spacial difference since both parties would have been occupying different spaces at different times, there is also the fact that the world they assimilate with will be different (Their friends and family would be different from one another).

The only thing's they'd have in common is perhaps how they look and the limitations of their immune systems sharing similar results when confronted with something they are weak to, the only potential change their is through a surrogate birthing parent which might introduce different immunities.

On the contrary, there are quite a few recorded incidents of individuals providing information that their current culture, education, language and/or age would prohibit them from having access to.

even this life is full of many preparatory processes and challenges in anticipation of what lies ahead
