child must be non-null, means the computer requires you to have a child that does exist. The computer requires you to give birth to a baby.

It's crossed my mind a time or two...that this laptop is possessed.

    :roflmao:

Oh my, I can't stop laughing!

    This part is really funny:

Oh, before I forget: If I do freeze up, my reset button is located in the front. Press it and... voila! Do not unplug me and then plug me back in. Do you have any clue how much that fucking pisses me off? (Why did I even bother asking you that? Of course you don't. You're Vicki Helmholz, the world's dumbest dental-office receptionist.)

I don't even have time to go into this sad excuse for a computer user's misuse of the term "user-friendly." If there were a merciful God in Heaven, He would give me arms that I might strangle this bitchwad.

Sadly, I do reboot when my laptop ''freezes'' up.

wegs, is the laptop still "freezing up" repeatedly? Does the "fan" kick on "high speed" when it happens?
If the fan kicks on high - that could mean it is overheating.
Hopefully, you are not blocking the fan or vents while using it - is it sitting on a desk or actually on your lap?

I have worked on a few of the Asus K53's and for a I5 dual core they are pretty decent machines.

wegs, anyway Post back if still locking up!

i'm getting a black screen that pops up now with white writing...''scanning disk.'' (this screen pops up instead of the windows screen, showing the place to type my password in) i cancel the scan, (even though it is 'highly suggested') then, the regular windows screen opens.

i'm over it. this laptop sucks. only a year old...unreal.

taking it to get it checked out at a local computer shop...
    i've appreciated your help!

Sometimes downloads and installs don't correctly function because a reboot occurred where it didn't, a wifi connection was weak and caused a corruption of data or the harddrive needed a fix.

There are many different fixes for this, the first though is completing the "Scandisk" since it will attempt to fix corrupted partition information or recover corrupted files. If you reboot during the scan when it's not suppose to, then it generates more errors and will attempt to scan again (It can get a little cyclic)

So it basically means having to let it try to fix (while Scandisk/Fixdisk) for as long as it needs on it's own.

If the harddrives not the problem, then it could be the integrity of the files this can either be caused by the data being corrupted when the download was cached (suggesting either bad RAM or wrong installation privileges), or from a virus corrupting the data.
(RAM can usually be checked by certain third-party programs or even sometimes by changing how the system boots from BIOS)

If it's a virus then the problem should be observable through an antivirus check of running processes.

Sometimes problems can be caused by using certain "regkey cleaning tools" or other optimizers, while they attempt to help sometimes they can be bad hacks, it's usually best to avoid them and continue with a vanilla install where possible.

Admittedly if you aren't particular tech savvy the only potential salvation is by either getting someone more technically apt to fix the problem or if possible attempt a clean reinstall of the OS. Unfortunately it's not one of those things that can easily be fixed or explained how to fix over a forum or phoneline, that's definitely one of those jobs that would require a physical presence. (I'm not suggesting that I'll pop over, I'm just saying tech guys would need to tinker with it)

Thanks for the advice, Stryder. Don't you find this absolutely ridiculous, though? I feel like I'm constantly "trouble shooting" this thing. :/

And the boxes with the script "null child" are popping up almost constant.

One year old Asus? They have a decent rep, i thought...just upsetting.

What the query for a "Not-null" and mentioning of "child" refers to is that a "parent" process (likely a browser) isn't able to populate a cloned lesser instance (child, possibly a "tab") with data because apparently it doesn't exist (Null). This means the process might well either be corrupted or have been infected by a virus. There is also a possibility that those third-party antivirus/antispyware programs might have deleted certain keys in the registry that would have stop those messages popping up. I'd suggest looking at a "restore point" prior to all these problems if possible and try repairing things a little differently when you choose to restore.

    Thanks, Stryder...your "diagnosis" sounds grim.
