Windows Updates--are these 'really' updates or is there a problem?

Judging from this article it looks as though I'm going to continue to sit tight with Win7.

wegs, of the 2 pics that Stryder Posted both are screen grabs of the Windows 8 "desktops" or "screens"

The first, or upper picture shows the "desktop view" - the "task bar" or "tool bar"is the thin "bar" across the top (of the first pic) which has the "Internet Explorer" icon on the extreme left and the 4 black circles.

The second, or lower picture shows the "default" screen or desktop for windows 8 - it does not have a "tool bar" or "task bar" displayed on it.

Again, they are both pics of the Windows 8 "Operating System" - not Windows 7.

Since neither picture actually displayed a "bottom tool bar" - thought perhaps you may be unsure of what the tool bar/task bar was.
If I was incorrect - please treat me bad and send me to my room without dinner!

I never used windows8 so cannot comment on it. I think Vista got a bad rap because it was viewed as an intermediate OS. No real reason to upgrade from XP except if you are an OS buff. Windows 7 is better than XP...although better is a relative term. Better to whom? Better for what? etc.

The default was the bottom image, the "Metro" version, the colour's and style can be adjusted based upon user preferences.

It's very easy to get to the standard desktop mode, since it's one of the links out of the "Metro" style.

The top image actually shows the taskbar at the top of the screen, you can actually move taskbars to left/right/bottom/top. I tend to go with the top purely as it means moving the mouse less when handling multiple tabs/programs, although on a occasion a few programs attempt to hide their bar beneath it. (A simple fix of unlocking taskbar, collapsing it then resizing it before locking it again)

 

wegs, the default/startup "screen" or "desktop" is what you look at on your computer or laptop - the place that displays your "icons"(the little pictures that you click on to make things happen).

When you told me "Think I'm swapping my current wallpaper out for the pic in the 2nd link." in your Post #5 of the Cool wallpapers and backgrounds Thread - wallpapers and backgrounds are the " Large Picture" that comprise the main area of your startup "screen" or desktop image!

The "default" is the picture/wallpaper/background that was originally there when the computer or laptop was turned on for the very first time after being purchased as brand new!

well...just when you think that everything is working fine with your computer...alas, it's just an illusion.

i've been getting these odd error messages...that pop up in a box, with a bunch of ''code:''

''Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.''

what the heck is this nonsense? ^^

it will have a 'yes' or 'no' tab included in the box...i usually just click the top right 'x' that shows in the pop up box, because not sure what yes or no means in this instance.

 

wegs, sounds like a "coding" issue - do you you write code?

Did not know you did, so more than likely you are getting it while on-line using Firefox as your browser - possibly while trying to watch or load videos?

Adobe sometimes throws that code also - in Firefox and Chrome browsers.

Wegs, if it is only happening on-line, or only when loading/watching videos or photos - try going to the same site/webpage using Internet Explore as your browser.

Or do you possibly have an i Phone or Apple product using i-Tunes you are linking with your laptop?

Get back to me if you are actually compiling/decompiling code with more info!

I went to post a youtube clip in the joke section here, and that's when the nonsense box showed up again.

Here's the nonsense I received tonight:

TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.

wegs, the easiest solution would be to just post the "link" to the youtube video.

You may, possibly be able to Post it by using "Internet Explorer" as your browser when trying to do it, but since you, if I remember correctly, use Firefox as your browser, it would be just plain easier to Post just the web address - link - instead of the actual video!

wegs, that is about the only quick and easy way I can help. Everything else involves troubleshooting your "browsers" settings, add-ons and basic configurations!.
Something that would be nigh' impossible without me physically sitting in front of your laptop or "virtually taking control" of your laptop - which would still require a lot of "fooling around with Windows settings", on your part.

What browser are you using? Firefox? - Internet Explorer? - Chrome? - Opera?

Are you using the "touchpad" on the laptop or an external "mouse"?

If using an external "mouse" - is it wired or wireless?

Is your laptop plugged into the wall - or is running off of the batteries?

for error #1009,

update your flash player

use firefox instead

 

wegs, okay that rules out a few things. leaves quite a few though - but lets start simple.

The "power settings" of your laptop may be in "Power Save " mode (saves energy by reducing performance when possible).
Easy fix! : - all clicks are "left click" unless stated "right click" !!!

1.) close all programs - you should now be @ desktop

2.) "right click" on a blank area of desktop (not on any icons or taskbar!)

3.) a panel should appear - at the bottom of the panel, "click" on Personalize

4.) this should open a Window - on the lower right hand side of the window there should be an icon with "Screen Saver" written in Blue below it - "click" on it

5.) this should bring up your "screen saver settings" window or panel - for the time being, set your screen saver to "none" and make sure there is NOT a check in the box next to "on resume display logon screen" - then "click" on "Change power settings" in blue at the bottom

6.) this should bring up a "select power plan" window - options should be balanced/high performance/power saver - you should select "high Performance" - if it is not displayed, "click" on the "show additional plans" button(little arrow)

7.) after you select "High Performance" - "click" on "change plan settings, in blue, on far right - the options shown will be self explanatory - set them as you wish(i put "never" on both myself) - then "click" on "save changes"

8.) "click" on "Red Boxed X" on upper right to close all panels/windows and Restart laptop!

wegs, the above steps may or may not solve your issue!

If you can, Post back to me with the Model of your laptop. If I remember correctly you stated it was an Asus.
By closing the laptop and looking on the bottom, there should be a Label stating Model/serial number...I need the FULL Model name, including any Rev's or series or something like that - Post that info back to me if problem not corrected with ^^above^^.

wegs, it appears you are still working with Videos.
Try doing what you are doing using "Firefox" browser - or got a reliable search engine ( dogpile.com is good) and type:

''TypeError: Error #2007: Parameter child must be non-null.'' then ? - Check through links to find what applies to what you are doing when you actually get the "error prompt". Lots of answers out there!

Posting actual embedded video is a lot more involved than just Posting the Links to videos! As you are fast becoming aware, it seems!
