If you’re a single man, you may go to bed with a clear conscience but you rarely sleep on clean sheets. At least, that’s according to a new study, which found that single men on average only clean their bed sheets four times a year.

In comparison, single women change their bed sheets every two weeks.

And while cleanliness numbers surge for married couples, it appears the credit for the median boost for guys primarily belongs to women. In fact, it may be the men who are dragging the women down, as the average washing frequency amongst couples is once every 2.3 weeks, with women doing 81 percent of the washing.

And as “How Stuff Works” points out, the average person spends about a third of their entire life in bed. In other words, the old saying, “ As you make your bed, so you must lie on it,” may have more meaning than originally intended.

But are these single men literally sleeping in beds of filth? Or, are the women perhaps overdoing it a bit? Turns out, it mostly depends on your own standards of cleanliness.

You missed out the important study on how many times a month a single man changes his underwear.

I change my sheets every 2-3 weeks, depending on how dirty they are. My dogs sleep with me, so sometimes in spring and summer they bring in dirt from outside. Because of that, sometimes I have to change them before 2 weeks.

If I'm having a guest I try to make sure the sheets are fresh. But if not, one or two days' previous use is usually okay.

I change my underwear after every shower. I always shower after going to the gym, which is 3-4 times a week. I try not to shower every day because it makes my skin too dry.

When my wife and I were living in the same state, laundry was usually my job. I can fold a fitted sheet. I even know how to iron a silk blouse.

Somehow I'm able to change my sheets and my underwear without a vagina. It's a miracle!

Kind of depends on the weather, sheets - hot weather, thinner summer sheets, every week anyway; cold weather, thick flannel sheets, go a month easy. Comfort's the key - they get sweaty and sticky, time for new sheets. That has been so all my life, a woman of the house or no.

Underwear every day. That may be because I've always had physical jobs, and modern department store cotton underwear goes slack and pinches and chafes within hours - maybe in the good old days it would keep doing its job indefinitely (I've been told that old fashioned high quality wool underwear in particular would retain elasticity and not chafe for weeks), but not in my lifetime.

The fact that my mother left this up to us may be a factor here - it's always been my own decision, biased early by mom doing the laundry (so no penalty for frequency).

I once heard a single guy say he changed his sheets when they got up and followed him into the bathroom in the morning. My gal changes my sheets every week.

Who is the she you are referring to? I meant just that I'm able to operate a washing machine without personally owning female genitalia.

I have a king-size bed and my dogs are small (Lhasa Apsos, 20lb/9kg), so there's plenty of room. I screen my guests carefully and they have to love dogs too.

And for those guys just too lazy to wash their sheets, (not naming any names here!), here's a few tips on what kind of sheets to buy:

    1. Watch Out for Hand Enhancers

Slaven warns consumers to not base their purchase on how sheets feel in-store. Many manufacturers put hand enhancers on linens, so when customers go on to gauge the softness of sheets they actually are feeling silicone softeners, which disappear after the first wash.

    2. Decide What Is Your Type

If your ideal sheets are “soft and smooth,” then Slaven recommends sateen sheets. But if “crisp and smooth” are what you are looking for, Slaven suggests percale sheets.

    3. Focus on the Cotton

Once you decide on the type of sheets you want, look at the type of cotton next. Slaven notes, “Cotton polyester is great for the kids, but adults … we sleep on 100 percent cotton.” And if you’re looking to invest in a set of sheets, she recommends looking at combed cotton, Egyptian cotton or Pima cotton sheets, because they are much smoother against the skin and will not get fuzzy.

    4. Do Not Be Fooled by the Thread Count

Slaven insists that higher thread count does not necessarily mean superior sheets — ”400 [thread count] is about the limit that you can get onto a loom. And the true thread count [is] between 200 and 400. That’s where your value is. … Once you’re seeing higher thread counts, they’re inflated,” she says. So when you do see thread counts above 400, keep in mind that Slaven has found that manufacturers often achieve the high count by jamming in extra thinner pieces of yarn, which can double or even triple the actual count.

    4. Don’t Feel Stuck

Slaven’s biggest advice for consumers is to “keep your receipts.” Most stores and online retailers have return policies, so if you are not happy with your sheets after you’ve washed them and think they are not performing the way you as a consumer expected, do not be afraid to send them back.--http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/business/2013/06/everything-you-need-to-know-before-you-buy-sheets/

How often do guys like me wash our bedsheets? I didn't know that anyone needed to wash them. Just throw'em on the bed, then forget'em.

We're fine unless the bed tries to eat us, and you can usually tell from all the saliva when a bed is getting ready to try that.

    This was pretty good.

According to Norwegian bachelor farmer handbook, changing bed sheets is strictly optional. I suggest changing them when they become obnoxiously odoriferous and/or stiff as a board or when the dog barfs or poops on them, whichever comes first.

When I was about 20 a girl asked me how often I washed my feet with care and purpose. I was puzzled, and after a moment I had to honestly respond, "Never as far as I know.".

    She was horrified.

If you are a young, single man...I suppose the frequency of washing your sheets both determines and receives feedback by the company you keep and your sense of charm.

I think it also depends on how often a single man sleeps alone in his bed
