I love to follow archaeology news. This link will take you to an article, showing what is thought to be the oldest petroglyphs dated in North America...supposedly dating back (possibly) as far as 14,800 years.

That's incredible. Scientists have thought this to be the timeframe around when humans settled in the Americas...this is special to me.

    Enjoy

nothing conclusive for dates---------just a guess so far

I wrote several papers circa late 70s arguing against "clovis first"

So... too late to charge them for vandalizing public property?

This sentence fairly well sets their Maximum age for they would hardly be carved under water:
When were the first humans in America?

When were the first humans in America?

That is the nature of the "clovis first" debate

My guess is sometime during the last 60,000 years, but well before the clovis culture.

So far we have monte verde, and buttermilk creek complex, circa 15ka, and a few much older potentials, not yet widely accepted.

discounting the calico hills claims, we have a couple 30ka claims

    Thanks yet this article states
so that 14800 years seems a bit on the light side.

Glad to hear I'm not alone with my hobby..
The Clovis people were pretty sophisticated for that time. It would appear they created the first sidewalks.

It always interests me and saddens me at the same time, as to why ancient civilizations "die off."
I'd be interested in learning what u know.

Wow, 60,000 years really? You think?
I agree long before Clovis as well.

Edit to add: So, strong evidence surfaced to put an end to the Clovis theory ya know? And I was reading recently how there was so much criticism against these new findings. Why the hell do scientists have such a hard time parting with theories that sorry...aren't valid anymore based on overwhelming NEW evidence?
I am on my phone now but when I get time tomorrow, I'll post the link to the article where the critics are arguing over the validity of the new evidence against Clovis first. It's kind funny ..,

I wonder how long it have taken the inhabitants of Patagonia to get there , it is a long distance from the Bering straight . I understand the migrants had means to navigate.

islands and australia were settled 60ka
so boats were in use then
seems a small step to assume coastal travel via boats

problem being that sea levels were much lower then, so the really good stuff is most likely now under deep water and lots of sediment

Yep, agreed sculptor...i didn't think about sea levels being lower, interesting point.

Hey, here's an article about early migration....''Coming to America.''
    Might answer your questions, arauca.

    http://www.nature.com/news/ancient-migration-coming-to-america-1.10562

An excerpt from the link here, that I thought was of particular interest:

There is also a controversial variant of the coastal migration model, put forward by archaeologists Dennis Stanford at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC and Bruce Bradley at the University of Exeter, UK. Called the Solutrean hypothesis, it suggests that coastal migration from Asia could have been supplemented by parallel migrations across the Atlantic, bringing stone-tool technologies from present-day Spain and southern Europe to eastern North America.

I haven't got the article here, but about ten years ago I read that the Asian colonists walked all the way down to the southern tip of South America in just one thousand years.

Since all early boats were made of wood, they don't hold up well. The oldest we have found is a canoe made from a hollowed-out pine tree trunk roughly ten thousand years ago.

But circumstantial evidence is strong. There is evidence of human habitation on Crete 130,000 years ago. They must have had boats since there's no other way to get to an island.

Canoes were made by careful burning inside and some outside or the could make raft boats just by tying several logs together.

There are people to this day who simply shorten and roughly streamline a log, straddle it with a makeshift paddle (a stick with a thick fork, say) or even just their hands and feet, and cross miles of open water thereby. People who do that can be found on Lake Turkana and region in Africa, and other places. On the shores of Lake Titicaca you will find people doing that with knot-fastened and shaped bundles of reeds, when they don't have time to fashion more permanent boats with that technique. With a bit more investment, the luxury of a raft that will allow a fire and a nap during longer journeys: http://www.google.com.au/imgres?q=t...page=6&tbnh=172&tbnw=253&ndsp=23&tx=150&ty=81

Can you imagine traveling long distances using that ^^ thing? Yikes.

Some books for those interested in learning more about Clovis first.

I'm kinda bummed. I was thinking today about what life was like for Clovis females, especially women who were pregnant. How did they travel long distances while pregnant? How did babies make the trek? Just things like this that I'd like to know, and couldn't find anything on it at all, today. If anyone runs across such info, please post it here for me? Thanks.

You probably don't have to look that far back. There were no beasts of burden in the "new world" until the Spanish brought horses with them in the 16th century.
