I think it's interesting what your friend said too, Stanley but the lower "figure" looks extremely under exposed so now in thinking it through, not sure.

My opinion is the effect was achieved possibly using a smoke machine like is often used in concerts, etc...and the smokey "images" were seen after the smoke dissipated. (But it seems like a deliberate staged effect)

Google "smoke machines" then click images and you will see what I mean.
    Just my guess.

It makes sense that someone who only wants real evidence would debunk any that appears questionable. That's what I do. I decide on a case by case basis. And I don't put much stock in finding faces and figures in orbs, mists, mirrors or window panes. The apparitions I've seen pics of are generally stand alone manifestations and are quite unmistakeably figures. Here's some examples:

"These photos were taken by Guy Winters when he and friend were investigating the O'Hare mansion in Greencastle, Indiana. They were told about the old abandoned house by another friend who said he and his girlfriend were scared away from it by some ghostly entity. So with permission of the owner, Guy and Terry went to explore the property. Armed with video and film cameras, the team spend a couple of days, in both daylight and at night, looking for evidence of possible haunting activity.

The above photos are the remarkable result of a picture Guy took of one of the upstairs windows. The image of a vaporous pink ghostly woman is rather clear. Guy did not see the figure at the time he snapped the photo, but saw it only after the film was developed. An analysis of the film determined that the image is present on the film's negative. The bottom right photo is a digital enhancement, which reveals a skull-like appearance for the ghost's face.

Several other anomalies and paranormal activity were experienced there by Winter's team."

"This amazing photo was taken by photographer and graphic designer Neil Sandbach in 2008. Neil was photographing some scenic shots at a farm Hertfordshire, England, as part of a project for wedding stationery; the couple planned to have their wedding ceremony held there.

Later, Neil was astonished when he examined the digital photo on his computer. There, as if peeking around a corner at him, is a ghostly, white, almost glowing figure of what looks like a child. Neil says he is quite sure there was no one there at the time.

There is further corroboration that this is a true ghost photo. Neil had shown the couple the anomalous photo, and before the wedding they asked the staff at the farm if they had ever had any spooky experiences there. They did not mention Neil's photo. Indeed, they admitted that the figure of a young boy, dressed in white night clothes, had been seen on several occasions around the barn.

Apparently, this is the ghost that Neil photographed."

"Rev. Ralph Hardy, a retired clergyman from White Rock, British Columbia, took this now-famous photograph in 1966. He intended merely to photograph the elegant spiral staircase (known as the "Tulip Staircase") in the Queen's House section of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, England. Upon development, however, the photo revealed a shrouded figure climbing the stairs, seeming to hold the railing with both hands. Experts, including some from Kodak, who examined the original negative concluded that it had not been tampered with. It's been said that unexplained figures have been seen on occasion in the vicinity of the staircase, and unexplained footsteps have also been heard.

Interesting side note: This photo isn't the only evidence of ghostly activity at the Queen's House. The 400-year-old building is credited with several other apparitions and phantom footsteps even today. Recently, a Gallery Assistant was discussing a tea break with two colleagues when he saw one of the doors to the Bridge Room close by itself. At first he thought it was one of the lecturers. "Then I saw a woman glide across the balcony, and pass through the wall on the west balcony," he said. "I couldn't believe what I saw. I went very cold and the hair on my arms and my neck stood on end. We all dashed through to the Queen's Presents Room and looked down towards the Queen's Bedroom. Something passed through the ante-room and out through the wall. Then my colleagues all froze too. The lady was dressed in a white-grey colour crinoline type dress."

Other ghostly goings-on include the unexplained choral chanting of children, the figure of a pale woman frantically mopping blood at the bottom of the Tulip Staircase (it's said that 300 years ago a maid was thrown from the highest banister, plunging 50 feet to her death), slamming doors, and even tourists being pinched by unseen fingers."

How can you tell HOW tall or far the ghost figure is without seeing the rest of his body? Also, when spirits appear they often morph and stretch and float like they were made of some plasmic energy. For all we know that's what this ghost is doing. See examples in post 324.

The Chemist Sir William Crookes Proved Survival With
    Repeatable Experiments Under Laboratory Conditions

    By Michael Roll

"Adrian Berry, the science correspondent of The Daily Telegraph, says that few subjects more infuriate scientists than claims of paranormal phenomena, because if confirmed, "the whole fabric of science would be threatened." This statement is not correct because nothing can threaten science - the Latin name for seeking after knowledge. The only thing that is threatened by uncomfortable discoveries in physics are pseudo-scientists. Their reputations will be destroyed immediately when ordinary people find out that Sir William Crookes proved that we all survive the death of our physical bodies with repeatable experiments under laboratory conditions.

Following this revolutionary discovery in 1874 this outstanding British scientist was knighted, made President of the Royal Society, and King Edward VII gave him the highest decoration in the land - The Order of Merit. Sir William Crookes was able to wipe the floor with contemporary professional wreckers who dared to attack him. The following is how he dealt with Professor W.B. Carpenter, a biologist from London University, who made a very unfair and anonymous attack upon him in the 'Quarterly Review'. Carpenter had been unfortunate enough to describe Crookes as "a specialist of specialists".

"My greatest crime (he wrote in his reply to Carpenter's diatribe in the 'Quarterly Journal of Science') seems to be that I am a 'specialist of specialists'. It is indeed news to me that I have confined my attention only to one special subject. Will my reviewer kindly say what that subject is? Is it General Chemistry, whose chronicler I have been since the commencement of the Chemical News in 1859? Is it Thallium, about which the public have probably heard as much as they care for? Is it Chemical Analysis, in which my recently published Select Methods are the result of twelve years work? Is it disinfection and the 'Prevention and Cure of Cattle Plague', my published report on which may be said to have popularized Carbolic Acid? Is it Photography, on the theory and practice of which my papers have been very numerous? Is it Metallurgy of Gold and Silver, in which my discovery of the value of Sodium in the amalgamation process in now largely used in Australia, California and South America? Is it Physical Optics, in which department I have space only to refer to papers of some Phenomena of Polarized Light, published before I was twenty one; to my detailed description of the Spectroscope and labours with this instrument, when it was almost unknown in England; to my papers on the Solar and Terrestrial Spectra; to my examination of the Optical Phenomena of Opals, and construction of the Spectrum Microscope; to my papers on the Luminous Intensity of Light; and my description of my Polarization Photometer? Or is it my speciality Astronomy and Meteorology, in as much as I was for twelve months at the Radcliffe Observatory, Oxford, where, in addition to my principal employment of arranging the meteorological department, I divided my leisure between Homer and Mathematics at Magdelen Hall, Planet-hunting and transit tracking with Mr. Pogson, now Principal of the Madras Observatory, and celestial photography with the magnificent heliometer attached to the Observatory? My photographs of the Moon, taken in 1855, at Mr. Hartnup's Observatory, Liverpool, were for years the best extant, and I was honoured by a money grant from the Royal Society to carry out further work in connection with them. These facts, together with my trip to Oran last year, as one of the Government Eclipse Expedition, and the invitation recently received to visit Ceylon for the same purpose, would almost seem to show that Astronomy was my speciality."

In truth, few scientific people are less open to the charge of being a 'specialist of specialists'." There is a vast conspiracy to make sure exciting scientific discoveries never come to the attention of the general public. Genuine scientists are banned from supporting the work of Sir William Crookes in the press and on every radio and television programme that is made on the so-called paranormal. People are only allowed access to the views of "experts" who can be relied upon to play the Establishment game - suppress anything that could embarrass the orthodox scientists who hold the reins of power. Nobody is allowed to balance the opinions and conclusions of these self-styled experts on the "paranormal". These professional wreckers have unrestricted access to all media outlets, while my colleagues and I have been refused permission to write and broadcast by almost every editor and producer that we have approached. The British people are not allowed to hear the secular scientific case for survival after death in this "free" country of ours!

Recent discoveries in subatomic physics confirm that Sir William Crookes was correct in his conclusions, and that he was not a liar, cheat, crank, a fraud or a sex maniac as we have been criminally led to believe. His only "crime" was to tell the truth."---http://rense.com/general32/proved.htm

"'But, Sir William, you surely can't believe that you have talked with a ghost," protested a colleague of the brilliant English physicist, Sir William Crookes.

"My dear fellow," Sir William answered quickly, "not only have I talked with a ghost, I have walked with a ghost, and I have taken more than forty flashlight photographs of the charming specter."

Sir William's fellow scientist shook his head in disbelief . "And what does your ghost appear."

"Katie is a perfect beauty," Sir William told the skeptical colleague. "She has a brilliant purity of complexion that photography could not hope to capture."

"I ought to state that for twenty-five years I had been an utter skeptic as to the existence of any preter-human or super-human intelligences, and that I never for a moment contemplated the possibility that the marvels related by Spiritualists could be literally true. If I have now changed my opinion, it is simply by the force of evidence."--Alfred Russell Wallace, famous evolutionary theorist

“We had a few new séances with Eusapia … those phenomena exist for real, and I can’t doubt it any more. It is unbelievable but it is thus, and it is impossible to negate it after the séances that we had in conditions of perfect monitoring.”--Pierre Curie

I have one of those. Set it up in my apt one halloween to thrill trick or treaters. The smoke DIDN'T stick to the floor but filled my whole apt! What a disappointment. On top of that, not one trick or treater showed up.

Electronic Voice Phenomena detected by Tesla and Edison

"No one can deny that computers and electronics have forever changed our way of life. There are electronic controls and computer chips in everything from the small appliances that toast our bread to the cars we drive, and make possible myriad forms of new entertainment, from VCRs and DVDs to video games and talking stuffed toys.

For a number of years some people have claimed that electronics can be useful in a quite unexpected way: to contact the dead, or at least allow the dead to contact us. Obviously, these claims are highly controversial. They make many assumptions: that there is life after death, that the dead are interested in contacting us, and that they have the means by which to do so.

The mysterious signals that Tesla received could be linked to what is now known as Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP). Tesla was one of the first men to experiment with the necessary electronic receiving equipment. The very same equipment, albeit more sophisticated than Tesla had access to, is being used today to receive EVP.

Many people experimenting with Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP) and Instrumental Transcommunication (ITC) say they have received messages from "the other side" through radios, tape recorders, VCRs, televisions, telephones, and even computers.

These phenomena have manifest themselves since the appearance of the instruments themselves. EVP, for example, has been reported for well over 50 years or more: Strange voices being picked up with primitive radios during WWI and heard faintly on magnetic recording tape.

Tesla may have been the first to receive these electronic voices from another plane of reality. As with other modes of communications with alleged discarnate entities, care must be taken not to be swayed by the stories often told by beings from the other side. Tesla may have been duped, so-to-speak, by voices that only pretended to be creatures from other planets.

This is nothing new to those who are familiar with the tall tales told to them by spirits who claim to be ascended masters, Abraham Lincoln or Ashtar of the Interplanetary Space Command. Spirits love to tell lies to anyone who will listen.

Those such as Tesla and Marconi who experimented with radio early on were the first to report anomalous sounds and voices emanating from their radio receivers. These early reports were looked upon as mildly interesting curiosities and quickly forgotten.

Theosophist Alice Bailey in 1936, transcribed these words of her great teacher, the Tibetan Master DK:

"Within the next few years the fact of the eternity of existence will have advanced from the realm of questioning into the realm of certainty. Through the use of the radio by those who have passed over, will communication be set up and reduced to a true science."

It has been widely written that Edison and his assistant, Dr. Miller Hutchinson, were seriously at work building a machine to achieve spirit communication. Tesla wrote in his journals that Thomas Edison had heard from other engineers that Tesla had been receiving mysterious voices and sounds over radio frequencies that were not conducive for the broadcasting of the human voice.

Edison, who publicly mocked Tesla and his experiments, privately believed that Tesla had managed to find the correct frequency to enable communication with spirits of the dead. Edison was determined to discover Tesla's secret, and be the first to get the "Spirit Phone" on the market.

In his diary, Dr. Miller Hutchinson wrote:

"Edison and I are convinced that in the fields of psychic research will yet be discovered facts that will prove of greater significance to the thinking of the human race than all the inventions we have ever made in the field of electricity."

Edison failed to live long enough to succeed with his ill-gotten idea to best Tesla. Tesla simply noted in his journal that Edison was trying to use his patents to talk with specters. Edison thought that Tesla could listen to spirits, Tesla considered that he was hearing people from other planets - the voices could have been the same, they may have just changed their stories to fit the belief system of the listener.

In 1967, Edison allegedly spoke through West German clairvoyant Sigrun Seuterman, in trance, about his earlier efforts to develop equipment for recording voices from the beyond. Edison also made suggestions as to how to modify TV sets and tune them to 740 megahertz to get paranormal effects. (Session recorded on tape by Paul Affolter, Liestal, Switzerland)."--http://www.bibliotecapleyades.net/tesla/lostjournals/lostjournals05.htm

Carl Jung Spends a Weekend in a Haunted House

"The famous psychoanalyst Dr. Carl Jung (1875–1961) described a personal encounter with a ghost in Fanny Moser's book Spuk (1950). In 1920, Jung was spending a weekend at an English country house a friend had rented. The nights afforded no rest, however, for the house was subject to the complete repertoire of a full-scale haunting. There were raps on the walls, noxious odors, and the mysterious dripping of liquid. Jung always experienced a sensation of incapacity whenever the phenomena would begin, and cold perspiration would bead his forehead.

The climax of the haunting occurred when the head of a woman materialized on the pillow of Jung's bed about 16 inches from his own. The ghostly head had one eye open, and it stared at the astonished psychoanalyst. Jung managed to light a candle, and the frightening specter disappeared. He later learned from the villagers that all previous tenants of the country house had terminated their occupancy in short order after a night or two in the haunted house."---http://www.unexplainedstuff.com/Ghosts-and-Phantoms/Ghostly-Beings.html

And is this merely posted as a curiosity that EVP is not a new phenomenon, or is this supposed to add credence to certain views?

Sounds like you think that science has gone seriously downhill since Victorian times.
Would you prefer a doctor to use a pendulum or a CAT scanner?
If you went to him, and he took a book from his shelf called
"Remedies recommended by the Orbs", would you be content?

    I may have misunderstood.
I thought that you were praising those Victorian scientists for their beliefs.
If not, what was your point?

If it was that they confused science with spiritual beliefs,
because their understanding of such phenomena as electricity and magnetism was primitive,
    then I agree.

A phenomenon which I don't think anyone has ever disputed: that people have thought they have discerned voices within electronic recordings.
As I keep mentioning, it is the interpretation that is in question.
Therefore I question your need to add further credence to something which is already accepted?

Do you think adding "credence to the phenomenon itself" is to add credence to the interpretation of that phenomenon?

That's not the phenomenon. The phenomenon is the recording/reception of non-present voices. There is no interpretation involved at all. It is a real phenomenon. Here's some really clear ones:

At least that is your interpretation of the phenomenon, which is the recording/reception of sounds interpreted as non-present voices.
And how does one person's anecdotal evidence add credence to the phenomenon?

And why are you so eager to dismiss photos as visual pareidolia, yet strangely quiet on the matter of aural pareidolia?

Strangely quiet? You haven't asked me about it yet. Same rules apply to audio as to photos. If the recording is just white noise or static with an obvious pareidolic interpretation, then no it isn't real. If otoh it is a human voice or a well-enunciated whisper then yes it's probably real. There are also class A evps as well as real time "heard" audio of cryings, laughters, screams, moans, growls, and sighs captured all the time. If you explored the field without bias you'd know this by now. Instead you overgeneralize like all armchair skeptics--if there are false evps, then that means all evps are false.

    Exactly.
The same kind of process is engaged.
If you want to believe something, then normal levels of doubt are cast aside.

An easy scientific test could be done, by getting people to say what words they hear in each case,
but without the subtitles. Also, add recordings of similar static which is not claimed to be from spirits.

I'm reaching the point now, where I wonder whether it's worth arguing.
This in particular is such obvious nonsense.
I wonder how anyone can be taken in by it.
