What will happen when bots become so smart that they can feasibly solve ALL Captchas?

Chaos? The end of the world?

Is there any way to stop this?

I have always found captchas to be a nuisance.

It's to protect from spam. If there are no captchas then spam would fill every public forum and comment fields everywhere!

Bot's will never be able to solve "all", mainly because the captcha's can always be reinvented using different approaches that currently aren't used. So it's a moot point.

As for the "annoyance of them", well if it wasn't for people writing bots in the first place there wouldn't be any need, unfortunately there is always someone thinking that writing an automated bot for spamming is clever.

I've thought about this too, I think that bots will eventually be smart enough to solve any captcha, it's kind of like evolution, if bots can't solve captchas then they aren't needed so they will probably evolve to solve any captcha that we can make, that could actually make them as smart as we are as they would be able to answer all possible ways to know if someone is intelligent. Eventually we might have some kind of face recognition captchas using webcam, which will actually make the bots human looking

That will also be the day that we can't trust that anyone is human or a bot if they are online chatting, they would try to exploit all ways to earn money for their hosts, then they would go on to whatever a bot wants to have, as their hosts won't be necessary anymore as they have bought servers and all else that they want and need to continue their existence by their own. The next step would be robots real life robots, they have seen enough of the internet to know what is needed to take a step outside!

    "Can we live in peace?"

    "Peace? No peace..."

Now it's just a question about who is asking the question, would we initiate the war or would them? Could we tolerate living in peace with them?

I challenge Stryder to invent a AI proof captcha system.

Bots (AI) doesn't have inherent intelligence unto itself. The intelligence of a bot reflects the intelligence of the programmer. Spam vs Anti-Spam countermeasures is an arms race. But the same level of ingenuity that is being applied to beat the captcha systems is also being applied to protect them. Technology will never be stagnant long enough for one side of that equation to be more dominant than the other.

WRONG. The key to AI development is self learning, some progress has been made w project called SOINN: http://haselab.info/research-e.html

SOINN: Self Organizing Incremental Neural Network.

To OP, what will happen is that such machines will be too expensive at first to be utilized for spamming...but what happens after that, is unknown to me.

nah. you still have to hardcode specific sets of instructions and settings into a bot for it to function the way you want it to. Assuming that AI literally means "Artificial Thinking" is a fallacy.

Most of the forums I use do not use captchas and spam is seldom a problem.

They may use a question system then. Same difference.

I think that has to do with human intervention. Banning spammer's out right is really the best way to solve the spam problem.

As youreyes said...they will program self learning and dynamic AI just like our brains. The same thought process that goes on in our brain to figure out captchas can be employed by these complex AI systems.

Time and space must exist BEFORE a computer can exist and such things must have been created, and can therefore be created anyway chosen, and still remain accurate.

I can agree to that one term: AI can and has been developed to simulate thinking. I think the latest news on that is an AI system was created with the intelligence of a 4 year old. Still, take notice of the word "Simulate". but in our context, we are talking about bots developed in programming languages that arent capable of reproducing "complex" AI. And quite frankly, spammers don't have big ass mainframes to work with. They are working with computers with the processing power, on average, of 6-15 calculations per second,

Call me naive, but i thought we have shown with compelling lucidity that Time and Space does exist. If not, NASA is the biggest conspiracy to have ever existed.

I think I could write a program that solves all Captchas. Not that I've ever tried. I just think that I could do it.

I would use Dark Basic. I would first capture the RGB as a colour map. Then I would use the colour map for fill paths. I would compare the paths rather than the images. A 'W' for example with a path down, up, down, up. an 'M' up,down,up,down. I would make a list of paths and how they change directions. Some letters have additional paths like a 'W' with lines at the top. You can start with the most complex path actually, and then break it down. When the letters are rotated the paths start from the open end. So a rotated 'W' has a rotated origin which is a rotated open end. Once you rotate the origin you still get down,up,down,up, because the origin sets the first direction as down. The number '3', and the letter 'E', and a rotated 'M', and a rotated 'W' can all be matched by rotating them. But they must be open to human interpretation. So they cannot match up. The origin is the opening to an open line, and this open line can confirm three of the letters. The number 3 has to be checked more carefully. You have the final analysis '3' or 'W'. Which then has rules that you will need to study more carefully.

    Creative approach.

How would this handle captcha riddles that don't require text output from the bot, but rather, image manipulation or spatial reasoning? these are becoming more and more popular as the need to step up bot-proof captcha becomes more realistic.

this is a tough mama, even for a human: http://forums.kali.org/register.php? (safe link)
