Infinity must be real or reality cannot be real. Reality cannot have a beginning or end, as what lies outside of it would indeed be real. So infinity must really be true.
I think about it like this. Your time-axis has a slope of infinity, your 'space-axis' has a slope of zero beacause everything you can see, hear, feel, etc (i.e. observe) is simultaneous at every point along your time-axis. Hence, infinity is real if time is real. Note the contingent statement. One corollary is that time is not necessarily infinite in extent, since any line can have an infinite slope.
I prefer the Buddhist notion of infinite being equal to our concept of zero. Mainly because I don't think we could use infinite as a place holder in math without having some sort of equal opposition. Or a third party negative infinite.
That is not true at all. Reality is accepted to have a beginning. And quite possibly an end. In reality it not appear to have physical infinities at all. Infinity any way, even if it had one cannot be observed. Again one reason why we might think that infinity itself is not a physical premise but rather an idea.
A technical way to say it, is that it is a continuing number. A number which is always one more from now.
"I can see in space the possibility of any finite experience... we recognise [the] essential infinity of space in its smallest part." "[Time] is infinite in the same sense as the three-dimensional space of sight and movement is infinite, even if in fact I can only see as far as the walls of my room."--Ludwig Wittgenstein http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infinity_(philosophy) Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
This is what makes me an absurdist, humans will never answer any question beyond whats in there own minds.
Real = Real Estate = land/ocean = matter real = Real Estate = land/ocean = matter = mass = energy/physical. Our Universe of occupied space is finite. The non-occupied space that embraces our finite Universe is macro-micro infinite ergo the true nothingness. The macro-micro infinite space is shaped from within, by the changing dynamics of our finite occupied space called Universe. Barring the above, the only infinite set is a concept of mind/intellect. r6
infinity is real, the thing is that w just can not understand this concept completely... there fore we have different ideas and theories about this
ur conception of reality is all wrong reality is not things perspectives, u r the thing then bc a thing is what is present absolutely reality is about relating multiple present, so different individualities and since they are by definition free from each others then things would b seen to explain relative relations of present space shares
I can understand space and time as having no set limits, but I don't think anything that actually exists can be infinite.
it is infinite that exist, relating freedoms is to infinite only, that is how we can look so different in depth and in forms while we speak and stand free while we are obviously of same matters relations n same background things are more complex to say the same fact, one true living reality, so exponential of free true moves infinity is noone, that is why intelligence of ones is in different levels, without counting evil what mean to invest the little of intelligence it sees for powers bc infinity is noone then infinity is what exist, since then existence is hundred percent puisque noone that is always why existence is in conceptions, which for u inferiors wills it is about waoo metaphors and images life done to pretend being smart
I would sure hope that infinity is real because a lot of higher mathematics uses the term infinity and has a lot of principles based on it and mathematics is what we use to determine if theories are real or an accurate description of reality. All the mathematics of known science blows up into infinity at the moment of the big bang. It just so happens that during the big bang everything blew up into infinity. It really makes me wonder if there actually isn't a problem with modern science because of this. It seems like mathematically that should be what actually happens. The laws of physics would have to be able to show how everything goes into infinity if the statement that everything blew up into infinity at the big bang was true. Otherwise it would be hard to explain an infinite universe when the laws of physics didn't even come close to producing any infinite values for the big bang.
Just because infinity is useful in physics and math doesn't mean that anything is really of infinite size or scope. Of course, infinity can be found in the finite, like dividing a curve into an infinite number of segments. But I think it's misapplied when we talk about infinite intelligence or infinite power.
Say for instance we had discovered laws of physics that could be applied to the moment of the big bang that did not produce infinities or make all values go to infinity, then wouldn't we be able to say that we know for sure that the universe is not infinite? But since it does produce infinities, then the trend is to throw out that theory because it is wrong, then again some people hold to the idea that the universe is infinite. Well, if the universe is infinite then shouldn't the universe as a whole then produce an infinity? So to me it seems like we are throwing out an option that should exist because the only way the big bang could produce an infinite universe would be for it to have had infinite values at one time, it wouldn't be correct logically to assume that the universe is infinite and then throw out a theory of the universe because it described a potentially infinite universe. It would only be valid to throw out a theory that has infinities that describes the universe as a whole if you knew for a fact that the universe was indeed not infinite. I think the fact that it produces infinities leaves open the possibility that the universe is actually infinite, and only if the universe was not actually infinite would then it be completely valid to throw out a theory that produced infinities at the big bang.
I don't understand the question. Infinity is not a tangible thing, it's a concept. And yes, it's a real concept. :bugeye:
