Any thread that mentions "coast to coast" as a source of information or "evidence" should simply be moved to Pseudoscience.

This post was held up do to moderator glitch, so I am updating it and re-posting it as this conversation seems silly.

I actually thought my first post had more to do with why some prescriptions/medicine are bad for you and society as a whole, however that is being conveniently ignored.

    @ spidergoat, skinwalker
Home remedies is often simply recognizing what nutrition you are missing from your diet and compensating. If a Nutrition Adviser gave you advice would you think that was the same as crystal therapy?

I am assuming this thread came about as a thread about Acid Reflux home remedies was going off topic.

One home remedy for Acid Reflux is to incline the head of the bed. This has been been proven to work and is advised by doctors, however it is NOT MEDICINE. It is a home remedy. If you wish to discuss "Crystal Therapy" and "Magnetic Bracelets" then you should start a witch doctor thread. This thread is about home remedies.

I will list some that are science proven.

    a) The previously mentioned Baking Soda and water to calm stomach acid. This is basic grade 9 chemistry. Not a medicine, although Alka Seltzer comes close.
    b) Baking soda and Vinegar make a very acidic teeth whitener. It works better than anything store bought, but is not approved by medicine as it is too acidic and removes protective coatings from teeth. It can be used to whiten teeth though if you use care and restraint. This is fact and not "crystal Therapy".
    c) Egg peels facial masks are not medicine but can deep clean pores and help attack acne problems. Probably medical equivalents, but unsure.
    d) Hot oil treatments are known to help dry hair. I do not know if there is a medicinal hot oil treatment.
    e) Body odor is often affected by diet, and therefore requires a home remedy/nutritional solution
    f) If you have never used Ginger Ale or Ginger tea to curb nausea then you have suffered needlessly. A tiny sip of Ginger goes a long way in settling nausea. If there is a medical equivalent then I am unsure of what it is.
    g) Also for nausea bland starches are proven home remedies. Mashed Potatoes or Rice. If you want to keep something down. Try those. A potato is not medicine. Maybe the doctor can prescribe some food you can hold down.

These are science based home remedies that are not pseudoscience. You would need to be very ignorant to even suggest such. I imagine these and a hundred other scientifically valid home remedies will be ignored in the following comments and ignorance shall prevail as I will soon tire of bringing "common sense" to some threads.

    @ spidergoat,
I could go on for a hundred pages on scientifically proven nutrients and methods to remedy yourself.

Having tiny carp nibble dead skin off your feet is not a medicine, but many people do it to beautify and stimulate nerve endings (better sense of touch in feet).

None of it would need to be "Crytsal/Magnet Therapy".

Some of us like to live healthy, and stay informed. Often home remedies might simply be prevention as in the egg mask facial peel.

You should also re-read my last posting. Disguising symptoms and playing with brain chemistry can also be unhealthy, and most medicines have unattractive side effects. It is true natural foods also may have side effects, but introducing animal hormones into a human system could be considered extreme.

You would need to be delusional to think Home remedies meant "Crystal Therapy". Try the Witch Doctor Forum if you want remedies like that please.

    Seriously people. You have brains.

I wasn't talking about nutrition but rather naturopathy, much of which is based on woo.

Agreed. And with absolutely no proof of curing anything, the title of this thread is an absolute misnomer/lie because it calls this stuff "Natural Remedies."

The thread mentions the "Coast-to-Coast" radio show as a legitimate source of information, therefore woo.

    @ read only,
Tilting your bed by putting bricks under the head does remedy Acid Reflux temporarily. It is not a permanent cure, but it is proven and advised by doctors. It likely is also listed in many books about "Home Remedies" and feel it meets every definition. Now as far as the term "Natural Remedy. I think this and the other natural remedies I listed also fit this description. What could be more natural about stopping Acid Reflux than standing up or tilting your bed? It is a "Natural Cure" (albeit temporary).

The term remedy does not need to denote "a cure", as it is also used to describe "treatment".

What we have here (in my opinion) is a bunch of Want-to-be skeptics preemptively attacking a thread that really need contain no woo whatsoever, however people may enter opinions that are woo'ish. As previously noted also, many "remedies" (such as Aspirin) come from "old wives tales"/woo. I am not defending these positions though. I think those thinking there is no such thing as "natural remedies" need to think before commenting. They are possible within the realm of science. Go figure!

    @ skinwalker,
Try making sense please. So if you open a thread about a real subject all I have to do is mention "coast to coast" on it and it will be moved to pseudoscience?
I think people here just want to argue a losing stance. It is not as impressive as you may think.

It's only a temporary relief of one of the symptoms. The "cure" label implies permanent, or at least long-term alleviation of the underlying disease/illness.

I'm much more agreeable to the usage of "treatment" rather than "remedy". IMO, when used by most people, remedy means the same thing as cure.

    @ Panta,
    Online dictionaries are free.

From my last post. Post # 47
You cannot change a definition of a word based on feelings.

Just because you are agreeable to a new term...
will not alter the definition of Remedy (that includes treatment).

Here is first definition I found.. Sorry if it does not appeal to you.

Dictionaries seldom include how words used in casual conversation may expand upon, or deviate from their precise definitions. Have you never heard someone exclaim that they "died laughing" from a great joke? Ever heard the remark that a fast car was "flying down the road"?

Nor did I try. I said, "The 'cure' label implies ...". And I'm not sure what you mean by "new term", considering that you specifically cited "remedy" and "treatment" as synonyms. As such, my statement merely conveyed my personal choice to use the word "treatment", as I feel it more accurately reflects common usage and understanding. You certainly are welcome to use whatever words you choose to describe things. I merely expressed my opinion that your choice could lead to misinterpretation.

Sorry. This thread has progressed 50+ posts and instead of anyone contributing it has simply been a silly argument over whether Natural remedies can be valid science, such as inclining a bed to treat Acid Reflux.

It is just silly. Still is. This had a chance to be a decent thread.

    From Wiki:

From the OP's citation. Sorry, but the format of this AM radio show is not scientific, it is entertainment. Conspiracy theories, hauntings, extraterrestrials, crop circles and the like are topics found here in Sciforums in the "Pseudo Science" forum, not in Health and Fitness.

There is a town in North Ontario called Bancroft, home to the Princess sodalite mine where the sodalite wall stone that lines Buckingham Palace came from. Early last century a nearby village began selling its municipal water to health enthusiasts as a natural cure for many diseases and a proactive health measure. This due to the waters inherent radioactive content as there is a lot of uranium in the bedrock near Bancroft. This 'healthy water' was touted and promoted by a Manhattan millionaire who bragged that he drank it every day. Apparently he did, as he died of cancer of the entire digestive tract from mouth to anus.

To wit: what is considered a 'natural remedy/cure' or a 'home remedy/cure' is very arbitrary. Yeah, some herbs can help some conditions, but some have side effects that can flat out kill you. Since they are herbs they are not under govt jurisdiction and it is up to the buyer to beware. Phen-phen was one such 'herbal remedy'. You could not only lose weight, you could lose your life....but it was natural!!!

Yes, and pigs may well fly somewhere, somehow, someday. If only it had a better starting premise and some decent citations, a more realistic subject and some well - defined points to discuss.

...or if it had been started where it belongs, in Pseudo Science.

why should it belong in pseudoscience?
quite a few of our prescribed drugs are derivatives of plant products.
our most famous anti-biotic, penicillin, is grown on moldy bread.

the best cure for most ills:
    1. plenty of exercise.
    2. eat sparingly.
    3. have a good mental outlook.
you don't buy any of the above at a pharmacist.

I would like to contribute a 'horse doctor' natural treatment which is a simple wound powder made of granulated white sugar and laundry soap powder, one without added bleach or fabric softeners such as Tide original.

Mix these two products in equal parts and pat directly on the open wound after it has been cleaned out with water and patted dry with a clean cloth. Wash wound and repeat twice daily. This works especially well for wounds in locations that would rip out if stitches were attempted. I had one horse fall on a stump in a logged area and rip a huge wound in the skin of his groin, with a loose flap of hanging skin larger than a man's hand. Called the vet but nothing he could do because of the location as far as closing the wound. We did put the horse on antibiotics because infection was going to be a guarantee with it being fly season. An old horseman told me to try the above mixture and it worked well. The wound crusted over and the flap of skin eventually atrophied and fell off.

Another colt got a wicked slice shaped like a 'V' right over his knee joint, just the skin involved, no structures. Once again, no way to stitch or immobilize the site. I used the mixture on this wound also and put the colt on phenylbutazone for the first three days to reduce swelling and ease pain. The wound healed beautifully, with no granulation or scar tissue and within months, it was almost impossible to even detect the site of the wound. Each slice of the original wound was over 3 inches in length.

Perhaps sugar and soap don't fit with the theme of this thread but they are certainly not 'conventional' treatment and for that reason I post this information.

    important note:
some plant products produce some of the most powerful neurotoxins known to man.

    you've been warned.

But it wasn't developed into a drug until science came into the picture. I'm all for evaluating traditional remedies for valid treatments.

there are a couple of problems with home diagnosis/ remedies.
the first is misdiagnosis, could be very bad.
the second is some drugs/ treatment can't be found in nature.
a lot of our anti arthritics aren't found in nature
