Ideally, this is a place for intelligent and informed discussion. I like reading from the many diverse people who achieve that. But to foster such dialogue, it helps to have some mods tossing the drunken bums out of the discussion when they start getting disruptive. One thing that may have changed lately (or else I just became aware of it) are some repeated spambot attacks. That has to be a drag on the mods who have to delete them. This would seem to leave them less time to do moderating. Another thing that seemed like maybe a covert kind of attack was the rise of threads like this, except raised to tie up the mods in debate over whether a ban decision was appropriate. Mods are people, they have a defense mechanism just like you or me, and can be driven unwittingly into a bad place, by insults, bickering and childish trolling. I like to think of them as generous people who volunteer the time to maintain just enough decorum to promote intelligent discussion. They rarely get any public thanks from the folks who benefit from their efforts.

Some people I liked reading have been banned. Hopefully they will be back. I'm not in a position to say whether the bans were just or not. I just know that, once the limits were explained to me, I try to stick to them. I'm as prone to mess up as anyone else and someday I may go off the hook and get banned. But if that happened, I wouldn't blame the mods.

Hopefully your friends will be back. My guess is, they prefer this site or they wouldn't have invested the time here. They might say they like it elsewhere, but I suspect they will encounter the same issue--to ban or not to ban, since it affects the quality and diversity of the clientele.

The other side is: new folks wander in from time to time, old folks come back, and regular folks occasionally have a great day and lend something really awesome.

I guess there is truth to your words, sometimes though we must raise a voice, even if only a quiet one, to show how we feel about certain things. If by using the form of questions in a polite manner we can feed back how we feel about decisions taken without the need for any real descent. We don't always know the back ground to decisions so we can only ask questions sometimes also to try to understand when changes appear to be taking place. I don't this does any harm and without any feedback or if people are not truthful then how are those in charge supposed to judge how well their actions are being received. I think problems only occur when people make an issue out of things and won't let them drop, this becomes disruptive, but really some politetly phrased feedback made once and not made an issue of is never going to be a thread or problem to anyone.

The only people who are banned are those who do not obey the rules.
The rules are made so that everyone can live in harmony.
Do not behave like wayward children, or dogs pulling at the leash.
    Obey, and be happy.

Here is what I think the Captain was actually saying whether or not he understood it.

The only people who are banned are those who do not obey the rules as interpreted by individual mods or groups of mods and who the mods feel, in an poorly defined, but deeply sensed manner, infringe upon the 'ethos' of the forum.
Do not behave like wayward children, or dogs pulling at the leash, or in a manner that offends the subcosncious perception by the mod of what is right.Obey, and be happy.

I understand only that which I am permitted to understand.
Everything else will only lead to harm.

That fits pretty good. Something I would find helpful is to separate bans related to communication issues from the spambot stuff. It seems like all the bans are listed on 1 page making it difficult to even read.

I was banned for saying that a crank idea was a crank idea.

Actually, what I was banned for was pissing off James R.

Kudos to you for posting from a phone. I wish there was a mobile option here...

Kudos for posting from a mobile phone?

So... the emphasis is not on concentration, or on attention, but on how you manage to get your words on the 'net?
Not what you're saying, but how fast you can say it, or from where.

I probably will be. When a moderator declares a vendetta, there's not much you can do except pack your bags.

You were banned because about all you ever do here is to call names. "You are a crank." "That is the post of a crank." "Arguing with a crank - useless" etc. etc.

You seem to have nothing to contribute to sciforums other than to assert your own superiority over "cranks". Your posts may boost your own ego, but as far as I can tell they have never added any useful content to a discussion.

No mobile option needed with this phone. Or requested. Over 1600 posts from a phone and counting. I give Kudos to the Blackberry Style I will be sad when I have this phone no more. Hope it will be a long while yet.
nope marquis and if I understand correctly your post is not from someone who has tried to use a phone to post. Its a little slower and at times harder. As some may say you just don't get it or understand.

    And side note.
I made a thread about the banned button area. Because of some comments made and sentiments shared.

    No, I don't.

Haven't you got anything better to do while you're wandering about?
I mean geez, I post absolutely blasted, and other than in the last few days it's once a week on a Friday night while playing poker on the other monitor. Incidentally, I'm nearly 2 grand up. Started with $50 a couple of months ago. I am gooooood.
Made a couple of posts between hands. Some Fridays the tables are slow and I'll make more than a few.

Last Friday night I was actually downtown for a while in search of mixers. A little girl shot me in the face with a water pistol. If I'd had a water pistol myself, me and that little girl would have had some serious fun. Alas, I was armed with little more than a smile.

Then I came back here and posted a bit more.

Frankly, getting shot in the face with a water pistol was the highlight of my night. I remember that distinctly, but I barely remember being here. I have to search the next week to find out what I said the week before.
But that little girl was awesome.

    You're right, I don't understand.

Grand Marquis. I have a life. If you are insinuating I don't. I'm not here as much on the weeks end. I just don't have many friends or hobbies. And I watch my lil' one during the day. I am currently disabled. So I find time to get on sci. The water gun thing sounds fun.
(Keep worrying about Nigel. Not about me)
