Can a hurricane of Sandys magnitude be artificially manufactured?

If so how? And can it be traced as manufactured? Signs of manupilation with nature in the starting area perhaps?

by gay love of course, thats why the 4 states legalised gay marriage, so the US goverment can harness the power of gay love to create superstorms

I know you're a big fan on gay love, but I really want to know the answers to these questions.

Any environmental scientist out there/ in here?

That would be completely out of the ability of our technology. There are several factors that go into a hurricane. One big one is the ocean temperature. Now it can be argued that we have raised the temperature of the ocean however we did not and could not heat the ocean underneath the path of the storm. Another big factor is wind shear at mid levels of the atmosphere - and again there is no way to affect that. Finally the movement of the storm is steered by factors such as the jet stream, low pressure systems and high pressure systems, which is not possible for us to affect.

So the answer is a big; no freaking way.

Mainly because the energy levels are so enormous. We can't even easily affect small storm systems. A hurricane is so large a system that it often defies factors that control the path of regular storms, which is part of the challenge of predicting its path. Could it be done, probably with the right technology. But it would be on the same scale as terraforming or other very large scale manipulative ability. We're a long way from there, and that's why climate change is going to be a problem for us. We can't fix it, no matter how much we've contributed to it. We can only predict and try to adapt.

I don't know why, but I think you are wrong.

Fair enough, you're allowed to think that.

Contrary to both beliefs it can't be done. Energy, GK, is stuff in the public domain. There's nothing secret about it. That's paranoia.

I'm not clear on what is meant, exactly, by "starting" or "manufacturing" a hurricane. What is the contribution of the manufacturer thought to be: The velocity and humidity and so forth of the various moving air masses from the various continents, oceans, etc? the temperature regime of the continent sized ocean region in which it forms? perhaps the inducement of rotation in the incoming air is imagined to be critical and unexplained?

None of this makes sense, naturally, but I am curious as to the mental image involved, the shape of the thoughts that one would describe as "this is manufacture of a hurricane".

Rhaedas and Origin also correctly confirm that it requires a very great amount of energy not within our control to perform such an influence.
I am not fantasizing when I recognise that men have the knowledge and capability to work with powers in nature that are not talked about in mainstream science.
The background forces of matter are equivalent in energy, as much as matter is made of energy, so that only a small change in matter amounts to energy hundreds of times stronger than atomic energy. Only it is not found or expressed in an atomic explosion but in the process used to load uranium with electrons prior to the explosion. So it is negative in type, but at the same time creating a vast difference, which is what energy essentially is.

It's known what force in nature initiates weather. The Sun. Without its contribution of constant energy, there would be no weather.

That makes even less sense "the shape of the thoughts" ?

I was just thinking that if we can go to Mars and all that, how difficult can it really be to start a hurricane out at sea and send it in a specific direction?

Yes. Flood the atmosphere with carbon dioxide, methane, or other greenhouse gasses. The climate will heat up and such storms will become more common.

It is not only likely, it is common. Google Hadley Cell and Coriolis force. For a more local phenomenon, go out and watch a dust devil lift off.

Storms begin with the action of the Sun warming the atmosphere and inducing circulation that brings warm moist air in contact with colder air (or by lifting it, which has the same effect.) It takes days for this activity to go from a disturbance to a tropical storm to a hurricane, because it takes days to establish the circulation of the storm.

How much energy does that take? Petawatt-hours. (Google that if you've never heard that prefix before, it is a very very large number.) Where does it come from? The sun. At its peak, the sun's energy impinging on Sandy was 2.3 petawatts. Of course, much of the energy that spawned the storm was effectively stored in the warm waters of the Atlantic, so the potential energy was even greater.

As I've patiently pointed out more than once, he knows absolutely nothing about the topic. More than likely, he drew this idiotic "forecast" from some astrology chart. <shrug> I've also been just waiting for him to drag the HAARP conspiracy into this thread....

Absolutely! Once this crank Kemmerer got in here it was headed straight for the Cesspool.

Wait... for the benefit of others, though, do you have a tool that would remove his posts only? If not, just trash the whole thread, it doesn't even entertainment value anymore.

That was my initial thought of the direction with the opening post, but I could also see discussion value as far as what technology would be needed for such a thing, how complex it is, etc. Like I said, any society that can control weather like that would be terraforming other worlds as well, so we're obviously nowhere near that point.

It is the force that gives hurricanes their characteristic spiral shape; the low pressure center would collapse rapidly without the Coriolis force deflecting air and water away from the center. It also creates the circulation of ocean currents that cause warm water (which spawns hurricanes) to collect in the equatorial Atlantic and then make its way up towards the Gulf of Mexico. So in a way it is the organizing force behind large storms.

If the rotation of the earth were reversed, so would the circulation of ocean currents due to the Coriolis effect. The Southwest of the United States would be regularly pummeled by hurricanes, and Florida would be a dry, hot area with a Mediterranean climate, surrounded at least on the east side by cold water.

Nice alternate Earth picture. Another big difference would be the shapes of the continents from the same storms from erosion, or lack of.
