How do I connect 2 computers together

I seem to be having a problem connecting my laptop to my PC for some reason. I am using a USB to USB cable but neither machine picks up the other. What am I doing wrong? :shrug:

never heard of a usb usb connection for computer to computer . try using an Ethernet connection

Literally just a simple USB cord, or is there a software device in the middle of it for providing mediation / compatibility between the two computers? If the latter, then you might have to check to see if it's really applicable to the two operating systems involved. Also, of course, ensure that the drivers for the device were successfully installed on them (from any optic disc provided or directed to a place on online where they had to be downloaded).

If no such USB gadget exists (it is just an ordinary cable), then more traditional approaches:

I'm trying to move files from one laptop to my PC. Images that is. They both run 7 OS.

 

Since you don't understand networking. One solution is just use gmail to send the images as email attachments to one of your own email addresses. Then download them on the other computer. Also, you now have backups of all your important images on a remote server in case you ever lose them.

Just use a USB flash drive stick, which can bought for under ten US dollars these days. Unless you have 100GB of image files and only an 8GB flash drive that downloads, uploads, and deletes slow. But even with the latter situation, you could still move them incrementally. Spending an hour or less a day moving a few gigabytes worth of files, over several days, till the whole bunch was finally taken care of. (Needless to say, make sure the original files stay put on their laptop and are only copied to the stick rather than fully moved to it; not just solely because the thing might become defective along the way).

 

First you go to a website called hotcomputermingling.com and set up a profile for each one. Then post sexy pictures to get attention. You may want to initiate contact on behalf of the shyer one. then let electronics take its course, just make sure they are both immunized before you let them swap data.

 

USB isn't designed for that and connecting a single cable between two USB ports might damage the ports. Network cards are howver designed to do what you are trying to do. This is how:

Thank you all for the information. I've decided that instead of transferring my images to another computer that is online and could also lose the images that I would break down and buy an external HD, 500 GB, so that I won't worry any longer about what could happen. So now that I did this, which I was trying to avoid, I'm sorry that I've made you all come up with ways that could help me. Please forgive me for my being stubborn about trying to save a few dollars but I tried.

 

There ARE usb to usb transfer cables you can get, but they are specific crossover cords... same thing with ethernet cords (though some PC mobo's now have built-in auto-crossover features... but they are rare)

 

That's what I do. It's a very practical approach.

 

Well I understand networking enough now but decided to just do the best thing and buy the external hard drive to store everything away from computers that could be corrupted.

 

Recently I have been messing with this same problem. The special cable I ordered just came today. It is a crossover (or patch) ethernet cable and there are youtube videos explaining how to set up the network. It is amazingly complicated, compared to just how easy and simple it is to wire a laptop to a router. If the OSs are different, that complicates the issue even more.

With 2 laptops or PCs with wireless, you can connect them wirelessly without a router, but they have to be 30 feet or less away. Again, you can find online solutions.

I need to save large files from one computer to the other, and the fastest way is the crossover cable I guess. I just hate the network complications...

 

Understand this: there is a 100% chance that external drive will fail and all the data on it will be lost. The only 'if' in that scenario is the time that will pass before that happens. Could be days, weeks, months, or years.

Thank you but I've downloaded everything onto not only the external HD but another back up HD that I have in my desktop so that's 3 now that contain all images I want to save. Little chance all 3 will take a dump at the same time.

 

If they are new computers they should have LAN ports on them, why didn't you just buy a LAN cross cable and use that? Then you just have to set the sharing on the drives and you can copy and I would guess a high speed LAN port is much faster than USB drives, especially when you have to physically disconnect from one and add it to the other
