Seems like prometheus is bending over backwards to ban Gustav over a couple of innocuous jokes. Why do y'all find him so threatening? Compared to the egregious violations of the rules that are routinely tolerated here, it's difficult to interpret the double standard as anything other than a personal vendetta.

Maybe I'm more inclined to believe what Prometheus said in the other, but I would speculate that it's because Gustav's posting style is fearless. Literally without fear of repercussion.
Sometimes, that can be a good thing. Other times, a person must be willing to acknowledge their own error. I'm of two minds about it.

He might show us that we're wrong, and that's the one thing we can't be.

Didn't realize there was already another open thread on this topic. My bad.

Meanwhile, let's keep in mind that Gustav likes the drama as much as anyone, and certainly isn't afraid of catching a ban. The point being that heavy-handed responses pretty much beg for him to escalate. Mods are going to have to either put their money where their mouths are and permaban him, or grow up and learn how not to feed the troll. What I really just can't figure out is why they keep playing this game, if they're so bothered by him.

not so much a "game" quad - there is an infraction system in place that, excluding particularly heinous infractions (such as commercial spam) is supposed to be followed. Admittedly, Gustav does have a fair number of infraction points for multiple reported posts and other issues... *shrugs*

Gustav is currently at the end of the ban cycle.

I'm guessing that he'll have enough sense to back off for a while until some of his infraction points expire; that's his usual pattern of behaviour.

If not, then when he gets another ban it will probably be permanent.

    A controversial standard

The "Gustav standard" is one we've fought about fiercely and frequently in the past.

We're not at each others' throats these days, in large part because we have other things to worry about, but I would also like to think it's because we've just had enough of fighting with one another.

About the only critique I can offer, though, is that I'm not certain it would go over well if I applied this "Gustav standard" uniformly. But it's not my standard, so I don't intimately understand every facet of how it works.

That is to say that if I applied the standard uniformly, according to my understanding, my colleagues might just think I was mocking them.

Given the 'questionable' warning/infraction in this latest case, would what you stated above apply? Or should that infraction point be ... questioned?

Call me crazy, but I like how blunt Gustav is. Even if he calls me out, and he has before, I kinda like it. Because if he has my back I know its sincere. He doesn't take sides, doesn't do the clique thing and doesn't ignore what he finds inappropriate or distasteful. Yes sometimes he is inappropriate or distasteful himself but aren't we all? taste is a matter of ... well ... taste. What annoys the hell out of one person won't bother the next in the least. And when all else fails you can trust Gustav to say what he really thinks rather than sugar coating his perspective so we can swallow it a bit easier. Honesty, I like it no matter how bitter it is.

Personally, I wish he was a moderator.

For a witch hunt, you need two:
    1. witch hunters
    and
    2. a person whom the witch hunters assign the status of a witch.

It's not about a personal issue with gustav at all. Anyone that posted what he posted in a forum I moderate would have caught a ban.

Why did he get the warning, then? What was against the rules about those posts? Seems to me like you got miffed that he cracked a joke about a cover-up and you took it out on him. When he reacted poorly, you got what you wanted and banned him. It sounds more like you're guilty of baiting than anything else.

    Except the moderators, of course.

One reason for that is moderators can't issue warnings or infractions to other moderators. Another reason is that I don't think any of the current moderators would post anything like what gustav posted.

I humbly disagree with you here. I see moderators throw expletives around all the time and even call people j@ck@sses. I seem to recall one moderator telling someone to f*ck off even.

And why can't moderators moderate each other? I thought that would be the point of having multiple moderators. They need to police each other and hold each other accountable. It would certainly add to the sense of integrity of the forum if we knew that moderators could be held accountable. I always assumed they could be. Now knowing they can't makes me feel uneasy that they can go off and say whatever they choose with no repercussions. Seems unfair to me. I think mods would be less likely to put their foot in their mouth and lose respect if they had to think before posting, knowing they were as susceptible to mod action as anyone else is.

Moderators can of course be sanctioned by super moderators or admins.
