do we still think that life on Earth was started from a comet and/or asteroid , rather than from here on Earth ?

    That is an enduring mystery.

Perhaps both. Comets and asteroids deliver unique chemicals to Earth and life develops here. Radiation makes evolution in space unlikely.

Few, if any, serious thinkers claim that life originated elsewhere. There might be some who consider it a low probability possibility when compared to the notion that it started here on Earth.

Those who advocate an Off-Earth origin seem to think they have provided an explanation for the origin of life.

If (contrary to my own belief) life originated elsewhere, there is still no explanation of how life originated from inert chemicals.

As stated, comets may have provided some components, but as for being the origin, it's unlikely. It just moves the goalposts to having to explain how life started in space, when there are many reasonable ideas on how molecular replication on Earth could have evolved into something we consider living. I think gravity might be an important factor, for organization, sorting, pooling, etc. Zero g wouldn't encourage interaction.

Early in earths history it seems it became molten. An then there was a huge air strike. A lot of particals hit earth some were comets. Steam was built. The earth cooled, an then water became present. From water an what ever hit earth that was present in the water started life. That is a super short generlized veiw. An one I share.

    Interesting topic . . . . . I refer you to the (my) thread "How Simple it Really is . . . ." for an alternative explanation . . .

I agree with dinosaur. There is certainly room for the possibility that a comet influenced the origins of life, but it's not essential. In the first place an infalling comet would most likely sterilize itself upon hitting the atmosphere. Secondly it would most likely sterilize itself upon impact.

It would almost seem more likely that a comet may have caused a large extinction event.

I have proposed life first started on Mercury in this Solar System. (It has extensively researched on a thread at Physforum) It has a lot going for it and I wouldn't be surprised it is proven within our lifetime.

How do you find a thread like that?

I brought up this topic some time ago, and I'll be damned if somebody didn't offer an outstanding response. I sure wish I could find it.

I think mars has a better chance of former life

You mean this thread? You use the word 'researched'. I do not think it means what you think it means. Unless you mean the links to science topics that others provided, but they don't help your case at all.

Looks a lot like this thread actually. We've been down this road before.

Tell me so more about , so I can shake some chemical in my jar and add some water I want to start life also.

It's down to how/why the Hydrogen atoms bond to other chemicals within the earths chemical environment, and why they don't on other planets.
I'd ask why the other planets don't have oceans of water, but apparently the earth is just the right distance from the sun, not too hot, not too cold. (same explanation for why life exists btw)
My suggestion is that chemistry is 'shifted' from planet to planet, 'doped' by the mechanical nature of the planet, the current general assumption is that chemistry is universal, only two planets within our solar system could support life if the assumption is incorrect, Earth and Uranus.
It's purely mechanical, nothing special really.
