I am the sort that shows five o'clock shadow half an hour after a close and careful shave. So believe me when I say all shaving products are a crock. Any shampoo softens the hair and skin and works better than any shaving cream or foam. Go for cheap disposable razors that you don't mind throwing away after a week or two. The best blades lasts barely longer. Any antiseptic soap or just any sort of soap and a rinse are as effective as the best after shave. Cold water works nearly as well as hot. This is my wisdom. I agree Hoatzin, shaving has escalated into a ridiculous competition. 5 blades? Really Gillette, we need 5 blades? No we don't. We need just one. The only reason the double blade was invented, was to sell us something disposable, as double edged, single blades: Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! could be sharpened, so they sell us some bullshit that double blades are better, so we buy a little piece of disposable plastic. I've gone back to a double edged safety razor, brush, and soap. When I completely man up, I'll get a cut throat razor.
I dunno Phlog / Hoatzin... my skin gets irritated as all hell when I use cheap disposable razors, and I've tried a few different kinds. The Gillette Mach 5 Power seems to do the best for me, granted, works as well with any cheapo shaving cream, but the cheap razors... they leave me all kinds of messed up. Little red bumps and lots of nicks and cuts as a result. *shrugs* I'm actually looking at getting one of the "Rolling Razors" because they will be cheaper in the long run for me

I don't believe I was advocating using cheap disposable razors, ... quite the opposite in fact, I intend to end up using a cut throat razor that will never be replaced. Most skin irritation is caused by poor preparation. You shouldn't just squirt some foam on and scrape it off straight away. Let the foam do it's job to soften the stubble first, and don't leave it so long between shaves, and you won't have to hack at your face so much. Also, exfoliating your skin will help, it gets rid of dead skin cells which clog razors, and leaves your skin more supple, and less prone to nicks. Afterwards, use some astringent, like after shave balm, to moisturise and cleanse your skin.
