I feel bad for the guy too, but even all finances aside, medically it may not be possible to 'completely rebuild' his face.

This is possible. Sadly, occurances that disfigure people happen all the time. Sometimes, they make it on talk shows...

true you need a certain amount of flesh to start reconstrucion. could he get a something that would be somewhat function but the meat and technology just aren't there.

even if we would have been able to do stem cell research full tilt from the begining it still in all probability not be enough. you,d need to grow a new face.

 

Well I won't speculate any further about stem cell research, I have my opinions but I admit my research is lacking.

For as things are, there is skin grafting and there has been at least ONE successful face transplant. but this guy doesn't look like he was in the best of health before the attack and is very weathered. it may be hard to get his body to accept new skin if they do manage to produce some or a donor.

Already a hoax is starting to circulate among teens on tumblr. My daughter saw a so-called screenshot of an article saying the cannibal is confirmed to have an unknown virus that caused the attack. Sheesh gotta love the disinformation age.

It's possible that Uncle Sam might have some plan for reconstruction considering their current research into fixing up war wounds. Otherwise there would likely be the need of a donor for a new face.

Failing that, they are going to have to start creating some really big mice to grow faces on the back of.

There's also the question of mental status. Being homeless, the victim's mental status was probably questionable to begin with. But even the most stable personality might well be pushed into insanity having survived such an attack only to awaken without a nose, eyes, mouth, or face.

I know of a case in which some nut job attacked a woman and scooped her eyes out with a spoon. The woman survived the attack but ended up in a mental institution.

 

I wonder if we could engineer a virus that would cause the majority of humanity to act like this person? We are almost at the point where we could usher in our own Zombie Apocalypse.

 

There already IS a virus which will cause symptioms very much like the rage virus from 28 days latter. Its called rabies, the only differences are the cure, the incubation period and the fact that its not airborn

A virus simply does not cause this kind of reaction- No matter what Hollywood tells you.
The reason why is rather complex; we can get into that if you need.
ETA: From above- Rabies causes encephalitis. It changes the mental state of a creature, but not to these proportions- You were right that you said "Similar."

An amoeba, certain types of proteins or prions or even, complex bacterial infections can, possibly result in a cannibalistic zombie. Certain Toxins can as well.
Only these complex (relatively!) life forms would be capable of producing the chemicals necessary to interact with the brain, as well as destroying other functions of the brain to have this kind of result.

A virus is absurdly simple. It can mainly only replicate. A virus does not change a persons DNA. It changes only an individual cells, or parts of that cells, DNA in order to replicate the virus. The many symptoms a person feels from viral infections is the body reacting to expel or destroy the invader- the virus itself does not cause it by any means other than being present- same as Pollen.

 

If I was this guy I would probably be glad I couldn't see myself in the mirror.
Being homeless he's independent. He will lose that now. An will likely commit suicide if he is not watched carefully..
