I'm using an HP mouse I bought a month ago and it has serious lag...in other words, its response to movement is delayed, sometimes by several seconds.

It didnt start out this way for a week...and sometimes it works fine.

I tried changing the battery and pad to no effect

    What could be causing this???

Have you tried running 'msconfig' to see if there's any conflicts with the port you have it plugged into?

I dont know what to look for...and its dangerous to tinker without knowledge.

Could a software glitch result in a mouse that works intermittently?

Run msconfig then select the 'Tools' tab and launch 'Event Viewer'. Look under 'Summary of Administrative Events'

You should see two subsections, 'Errors' and 'Warnings'. Look to see if you can find anything related to your mouse, either port conflicts (COM1-4 or similar), or problems with your driver, probably under whatever software your mouse is called. You can use the event id to find solutions online.

Otherwise its probably hardware related. Someone at HP could help you.

Thanks...I see lots of errors and warnings but nothing port or driver related.

It feels like the cursor doesnt want to move when theres a high load on the CPU.

This wasnt happening during the first week of use!

    Is it a wireless mouse?

    Try:

Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers > Mouse

A dialog box pops up. Go to Hardware and it will tell you under Device Status whether it's working properly. It will give the port location as well.

    Check under Pointer Options, too.

Go to Device Settings and you should get the options that HP lets you choose.

Are the buttons and wheel lagging too or is it just the pointer?

Is anything else acting slow other than the mouse?

One thing that can change when you least expect it - although the effects are usually rare - are the automatic updates (if you have them enabled) that allow vendors to come behind and change your configuration for you to help you fix what you didn't even know was broken.

    Other suggestions:
    1. At the start menu, type command. The DOS window pops up. Type systeminfo and you will get a report on your computer's configuration. Maybe something in there will stand out.

    2. You can go to the HP site and reinstall the driver for your mouse. If there is a conflict it may detect it during installation.

I've had an occasional lag issue with my wireless mouse when the receiver was too far from the mouse, or was blocked by something metallic.

Otherwise, I'd try installing it in another USB port.

Thanks...its only the mouse, and the wheel lags too. Buttons work intermittently.

It didnt require its own software drivers when I bought it...worked right out of the box.

Didnt notice any red flags in the control panel check you suggested.

Maybe your cord is too long. Try cutting it in half and tying them back together.

Sometimes the USB ports available on the PC are split between one or two that have their own power/signal level and a bunch of ports that run through a internal USB Hub that share the power/signal level. If too much is loaded on such a Hub setup it will cause lag because the signals of devices use the bus asynchronously.

The only other USB load was my wireless keyboard.

I dont understand why it would work to simply switch ports...but it does!

Did you accidentally spilling something like pudding on the other port?
