I love to eat! I play tennis which keeps me in shape, but i eat a lot as well. For breakfast i eat 2 eggs with toast and oatmeal, but im hungry like an hour later. And it's the same for everything else I've tried.
Is there any drink or specific food that has kept you full for a while?

If you are in good shape and the right weight for your height there's nothing wrong with feeling hungry before lunch.

One question is: why not just keep eating as much as you like, anytime you like? Is it the cost of food, or are you wanting to watch calories?

A falling sugar level is commonly the cause for hunger. The carbs in your toast and oatmeal can ramp up insulin production, which signal the body cells to go to the trough, and pig out on all that free glucose in your blood. Within an hour or two, the party's over, and there will be a recoil effect, where the demand for glucose exceeds the supply. This triggers the hunger response. But it's artificial. Obviously, your cells are not starving. They just had a feast. One of the strange things about eating a high calorie meal is that it can seem to leave you hungrier than if you had eaten a lighter meal.

You might want to estimate your calorie intake at breakfast. Include sugar, orange juice, milk, jam or honey if you use them, since they add to the count. If you want to get really scientific, you can get a glucose monitor and watch your blood sugar rise and fall just to get a sense of how your body is working.

You may notice less mid-morning hunger simply by cutting back on the carbs--one slice of toast instead of two, half as much oatmeal, etc. Also, you might want to find other breakfast foods, and mix up the way you eat, instead of settling into this pattern.

Here are some mid-morning snack suggestions. Try two stalks of ice cold celery. That will at least convince you that your stomach is not empty. Five minutes later, if you're not satisfied, and you need a sugar lift, you might want try:

    • a glass of orange juice
    • a glass of milk (you can add whey protein, too).
    • fresh fruit: banana, apple, orange, grapes, whatever is in season
    • dried fruit: a handful of raisins or prunes, etc.
    • a bag of trail mix or a granola bar.

Tennis is great. Bon apetite... and: SERVE!

I made an interesting discovery last week.

By grating a carrot into my meal of fruit and yogurt (1 diced apple, 1/2 cup berries, 2 ounces chopped walnuts, 1 tablespoon ground flax, and 125 ml of 6% Greek style yogurt) I found that I remained satiated for twice as long.

Formerly, I was hungry within 1 1/2-2 hours. With the added carrot, I'm good for 3 1/2-4 hours.

Similarly, three eggs scrambled in butter with a sliced tomato on the side (no toast) will hold me longer than two eggs with two toast. I remember eating 6 slices of raisin bread toast and feeling starved within the hour.

Water is also important. Sometimes our body signals hunger when in fact we are in need of hydration. Plain water does a better job than any other beverage in this regard. One doesn't have to guzzle gallons, just a few ounces now and then.

Yes, it is rather interesting that the mere thought of food that we enjoy seems to have the effect of stimulating one's appetite. Lead me not into temptation for I can draw the map, lol...

Hello kitson. As you participate in a high energy activity like tennis, it stands to reason that you are going to require energy in the form of foods that are most conducive to your needs. You may well have to ingest small portions of energy dense foods frequently rather than overburden your system with bulk or slower to digest fats and proteins save at the appropriate times to balance your diet.

I live in a cold climate and engage in outdoor sports that require endurance and so I eat a bit more protein and fat than persons who remain primarily indoors or who do not engage in an active lifestyle.

One thought on breads, have you tried pumpernickel? It is very dense and moist (the brand I buy) and has considerable 'staying power' in a small portion. Nut butters and nut milks are also other energy dense sources to consider. Macademia nut is one of my favorites. It is very mild flavored and you can combine it with almost anything else you like. Nut butter on pumpernickel will give you fat, protein and carbohydrate in combination in even a small portion. The additional fiber also helps stave off the sense of hunger and the small portion prevents burdening your gut and slowing down your quick responses needed in tennis and other fast paced sports.

It will probably come down to a lot of experimenting on your part to find the foods and combinations that work for your individual chemistry in the conditions where you reside/participate in these sports and activities.

It is actually natural to be slightly hungry. Through the ages, the vast majority of humans had to exist on a half empty tank. This keeps the metabolism higher and even your energy level higher in anticipation of hunting/gathering. The only disadvantage is a slightly hungry feeling will linger, which some cannot block out.

If you wish to shut off that feeling there is nothing like fatty foods like some sausage, biscuits and gravy. Once the body senses this high calorie fatty food, it will stays content for many hours.
