a FB friend posted a pic of a note someone left on gas pump saying "you remember the inog. of obama in 2009 gas was 1.87 anyone but obama 2012" now here its 3.65

well oil prices then were around 50$ a barrel now its around 100 soo per the note take 1.87*2 = 3.56.. WOW the price of oil doubled,, so did the price of gas!

again im not seein how this is obamas fault.. the friend is a huge republican and i called them out saying almost the same thing as i did here.. demand NOW is higher than it was back then and the DEMAND is going up faster than the supply is

It is not even really the supply and demand. Oil and gas are commodities which means they are traded as futures and that sets the price. There is actually no shortage of oil at this point, uncertainty in the mideast has cause the futures prices to increase.

The US exports crude oil, we are not in short supply.

There is little we can do as a nation to affect oil prices - except invade a mideast country which would cause prices to shoot up, by the subsequent actions of the traders of course.

This is a Republican talking point. Now that the economy seems to be improving, they concentrate on:
    1. gas prices
    2. the unemployment rate
    3. the debt

Yep. Even FOX News is using that now. Steve Doocy inadvertently read that list on-air during the FOX News show FOX and Friends - then started "talking it up."

The US has only 2% of the world's oil reserves. The only thing that would happen if we increased drilling and production is that we would run out of it faster, leading to a greater dependence on foreign sources.

Regarding the 2% of oil reserves comment:
Obama has done little if anything to help bring down the price of Oil & his energy secretary is actually on record as being in favor of much higher gas prices in the US.

Ironically, high gas prices and the economic damage they inflict may well be a far tougher opponent for Obama come November than this keystone cop Republican field.

    Just sayin' ....

What should he do? There is always the matter of Congress.

I suppose he could issue permits for exploration and drilling, since ... er ... oh, right. He did that.

It's worth noting that in 2011, the United States was a net exporter of oil. First time since 1949.

    Hmmm?

I suspect you got that fractured fairytale from a badly worded headline somewhere.

US oil output in all of 2011 was 5.877 million bpd, less than half our consumption, so no we were not a net exporter of oil.

    http://www.eia.gov/petroleum/supply/monthly/pdf/table2.pdf

We do export quite a bit of refined oil products, about 700,000 barrels per day of different distillate fuels, for instance we use 8.659 million bpd of Gasoline but we produce 9.034 million bpd, the excess about 373,000 bpd we export.

But I'd like to see some actual support for your claim that we Exported more OIL then we imported.

As you can see, this bit of news has been swirling around the cycle for a few months, at least. I can understand why people missed it, what with Survivor: GOP dominating the headlines, and all.

And it didn't take long to find out that you, as expected were still wrong.

Because you believed the HEADLINES and apparently didn't bother to actually read the articles.

    What they actually said:

The U.S. exported more gasoline, diesel and other fuels than it imported in 2011 for the first time since 1949, the Energy Department said.

    BUT

gasoline, diesel and other fuels are REFINED products.

Indeed, it talked about our exports of these refined products in terms of 700,000 barrels per day or so (vs imports of refined products of approx 269,000 bpd).

Which is nowhere close to the amount of OIL that we imported last year at 8,436,000 barrels per day (Which is ten times the amount of refined products that we export)

So we were NOT a Net Importer of OIL as you (and some of these headlines) claimed.

Just that some people don't understand the difference between CRUDE OIL and GASOLINE.

As one of your article explains:

But you can't be a net exporter of oil if you have to import the stock.

Which is why I gave you the actual EIA production/export data on Crude oil and distilled products, which you obviously ignored, but instead, decided to simply stoop to insult.

Don't forget how high the price of gasoline was in the summer of '08. I still have receipts from September of '08 where I paid at or just over $4.00 a gallon. Then the economy blew up, and demand dropped precipitously.

I have to say, as ineffective as I think Obama has been, and as bad as his proposed budget will be for the country, he has about as much responsibility for high gas prices as he does for bad weather.

It's certainly true that he could put into place policies that would lower prices, but granting permits to exploit new oil sources would still be just a drop in the bucket in the short to medium term (say 5 years...and possibly longer...this is a huge global market, it takes huge volumes to make a dent, and global demand is expected to continue to increase over time). Price controls would be a disaster. The increase in the price of oil seems to be more tied to increases in global demand and the possibility of war with Iran. (I suspect Obama could get prices down, if we abandoned Israel politically and took war with Iran off the table, both in a credible way...though I neither know how to make those credible nor would I favor it as a policy position for independent reasons/)

There's plenty of things that one can legitimately fault the man for, gas prices just aren't one of them.

    Up with hydrogen!

Hats off to Honda for taking concrete steps towards environment-friendly cars. We all know, in theory, how cars of this kind can contribute a great deal to the preservation of the environment. The problem is that some sectors want nothing else but to keep status quo. Perhaps a corollary of this fact is that environment-friendly vehicles currently cost way much more than the conventional combustion engine cars.

It is thus good news that such a big name in the automotive industry seems committed to producing vehicles that are good for the environment and, hopefully, not too heavy on the pockets in the future. Japan Today gives a report on the newest hydrogen powered car from Honda:

Hondas new hydrogen-powered vehicle, set for leasing within a few months, radically reduced the sizes of its fuel cell and motor for a superclean car with the same interior space as a regular car, engineers said Tuesday.

That’s a vast improvement from the company’s first such model introduced nearly a decade ago. The fuel cell was so bulky that the car could barely seat one person—and crept along at a snail’s pace.

The new FCX Clarity reaches maximum speed of 160 kilometers an hour and comfortably seats four people.

Well yes it's set for leasing in the next few months.

At $600 per month (which is about what leasing a $50,000 car costs per month).

And ONLY 200 of them over the next 3 years and then (with a few exceptions) only in Southern California.

    More like, Up yours hydrogen!

There is no such thing as an environmentally safe car.
