    Meant to say "Thoughts."

Anyway, new here, found a thread from this site while Googling that was from 2002 but it had a post from January of this year, but it was locked. Is that subject not supposed to be discussed here? Just curious.

The subject is valid, threads get locked for various reasons. But I'm from Oregon, and we have assisted suicide, which I think is moral and good.

Don't know why it was locked, but best guess is it probably got one of our overly prissy moderator's (not naming names) panties in a twist.

You know, because he/she was probably afraid that Sciforums would run afoul of some non-existent law and that there was the slightest chance that somehow, someway, some millenium, someone at Sciforums might get in some hypothetical legal trouble over a friggin post.

    Other than that, no idea.

    Welcome.

    Well that was interesting

I just had to re-register. I may get back in, may not. I know in the span of 5 minutes I did not forget my password..

Anyway, have an ill friend who is looking at options. I, too, think it should be allowed, it is in my state too, now (Georgia). There's been a brouhaha going on for the past several years because one of the right-to-die orgs helped a terminally ill person exit peacefully.

This person wants me to assist, and i just wanted to get thoughts. I won't actually help him do anything, but he's going to use the helium method - it's kind of macabre but it's easy, quick and painless, and there are many documented cases of it's success.

Thanks for the welcome and the replies. I was afraid to post. I'll check back - hopefully won't have to create another address this time.

Assisted suicide: what a cheerful thought.

Sure, why the hell not? Socrates and Jesus both got one, and they have good references.

I agree with his Mrs. Nicklinson. There needs to be some sort of system in place that allows it.

As someone who's done the whole "dying"(but not quite dead) thing before I have to say that it's not exactly what I'd call enjoyable. That being said, my situation was quite different from your friend's(given that I was put in that state by a knife in my gut) and I would much rather prefer a relatively peaceful and painless death over what I went through any day.

I just watched the Nicklinson videos. That was intense. The BBC also did a show about a man who did go to Switzerland to end his life with the help of Dignitas. He took a liquid cocktail and was dead within .. I don't remember, maybe a minute or two.. maybe less. Name was Craig Ewert. Nicklison was harder to watch because he's in such bad shape, and they kept showing him before he had the stroke - and he said exactly what my friend said - if he couldn't have the life he once had, he didn't want to live at all. I could talk a lot more about this but will just say thanks for posting the links.

    ??

Do you really believe that animals want to die, and that people are just helping them by killing them??

There is. Become a brilliant meditator, so that you can consciously control your heartbeat and breathing. Or better yet, learn to leave your body at will altogether.
It's not unheard of, but it takes some practice.

Of course they do not want to die. But by euthanizing them they are 'helped' if it ends or prevents unbearable suffering.

Agreed. There are times when providing a gentle death is the compassionate thing to do.

Just because a death looks "gentle" to some, doesn't automatically mean it is experienced as such by the one dying.

in the eyes of the law a new car is more important than a pet where as a human is more important than the car.
