Looking at the current events, you may get the feeling that there may be a few hundren million atheists scattered around the world, of which only a few millions actually come out of their closets, so to speak.

But actually, there are 1.25 BILLION non-believers [according to polls] in the world. If you take in the doubts and liers [to polls], there may be as many as 1.5 billion of us. That's a solid 21 percent of the population. And yet, religion and the religious seem to be the only prominent ones. The godless are the second largest community in the US, yet politicans care more about the tiny Jew population's votes than the non-believers. Even mentioning non-believers in his inaugural speech by obama was considered to be "shocking" [according to fox news].

Why this obscurity by the third largest community in the world?

They aren't organized, and most of the international atheists are just commies or buddhismists. Also religiously motivated hatred.

While your intention seems to mock, you struck a chord there. There is little unity among the godless.

Comeon man, no hate please. I just want to have a large bunch of people, a major community, to atleast let each other know that they exist. Moreover it would be better if they are heard and can contribute to making the world a better place.

Besides, those who evagelise anything - products, ideas, theories or beliefs - on this forum dont last long. We discuss here and through that we grow and become better people, that's why I am here. You must realise that today is just my 48th day as an atheist - I am still trying to defrag my mind.

Doesn't that support the idea that atheist is simply a tentative lack of belief and not rejection or disbelief?
    If not, why so?

The process of change moves at a slow pace where established belief systems are concerned.

Only a few hundred years ago, the charge of heresy could cost you your life.

The nature of our species is such that we bestow collective benefits among the members of our own group firstly, so there can be considerable lack of benefits to proclaiming one's affiliation unless one has adequate means of their own.

Atheism is becoming somewhat better tolerated by some societies.

It is far from being accepted even within the more liberal minded of these societies.

    Such are my personal observations.

People seem to accept that I am not to be persuaded and so most of them have ceased to preach. I'm reasonably certain that most of my friends are also non-believers and we all respectfully refrain from preaching to each other.

    Where do you live?!

In Europe, atheism is the norm.

Whichever it is, it apparently doesn't lead atheists to stick together, at least not very strongly.

Obviously not in Europe. I have made it fairly apparent where I live in various posts.

I'm not all that familiar with the makeup of the Yukon, but when I lived in B.C.--out in the country, about an hour from Vancouver--I was honestly surprised by how overwhelmingly Christian it seemed. Toronto, where I lived for a year, and much of eastern Canada seems largely atheistic--or just not terribly religious--on the other hand.

what are we atheists supposed to stick together over/for? we just get on with living the good life and not worrying about what others think of us. atheism isn't an organisation, it is not as if we go to weekly meetings or celebrate martyred atheists.

The attached link lists the religious organizations represented in Whitehorse.
There are also many churches in the smaller communities of the territory.

North to Alaska going North the country zone . She lives in White Horse Canada . I think about visiting . Doubt any time soon but I can dream . She would be very easy to stalk if I was the stalking type. At last I am a lazy stalker so no worries . I do think the sex is good though. If her husband is not taking care of her needs well that would be a crying shame . More cold more cuddle. We judge the cold by how many dogs there are in your bed . 3 Dog nights means it is real cold . You do know how to keep from freezing to death in a little sleeping bag when there are 2 people . ( Forget it Spidey, You can freeze. I am not going there. I don't care how cold it is . Besides freezing is not a bad way to go

Because non-religious people aren't indoctrinated from birth to conclude that they have a moral duty to ram their ideas down other people's throats. Non-religious people haven't had their emotional responses carefully and expertly trained to overwhelm their critical faculties whenever the subjects of belief, freedom or truth are broached. Non-religious people aren't taught that the one and only hope of a person to avoid eternal punishment is accepting that god is real, and therefore aren't driven by abject fear and desperation to either persuade others or accept their (apparent) horrific fate.

The religions we're familiar with in our cultures are carefully and specifically constructed to be virulent and persuasive. They openly encourage spreading the belief. Often by any means necessary.
