Why the US has not been back to the moon?

They will probably go back to the moon once China is up there.
To have a Moon War.

 

Since America went there and found nothing much except allot of dust, rocks, debris and some minerals it really doesn't see the advantage of going back there. Mars , I believe, would be a much better goal and I think that resources should be spent trying to go there instead of where we have already been.

 

Yeah it's damn expensive to do so and there has been no good reason to go back, we've focused our energy on building the ISS instead.

It's full of predatory rock creatures.

 

It had to do with the extra expense needed to make space flight PC inclusive. You could no longer take calculated risk using willing test pilots, but instead had to make space flight safe enough for civilians. The result was a much slower pace at a much higher cost; we did't get humans out of earth's orbit for the next 40 years, never mind make it back to the moon. It would have been better to use the high risk approach with trained volunteers. We would have been to Mars by now.

 

How many Americans would be willing to cancel professional football in order to start saving up a fraction of the cost? No one cares about the moon except green cheese connoisseurs, and maybe China if they still feel they need the ego boost.

Edit: I'm pretty sure the US still has plenty of probes going to the moon every now and then. Do they need to prove that we can still endanger human lives to do things a robot could do for a fraction of the cost?

Broadly speaking because it isn't the same America any more.

 

The war in Iraq and Afghanistan have cost each man, woman, and child in the United states over $4000 each. Million dollar bombs add up. I'm glad I'm not the last president elected or everybody might blame me for the economic crisis.

NASA has resorted to hitch hiking.

Who knows? It could be that the price of moon rocks has fallen, or the U.S. was warned off by aliens.

 

All you need to do is compare America of the 1960's to now to understand why the challenges of yesterday are out of reach today. Today the Government is bloated and creates huge deficits simply because it lacks competence.

 

A decision was made back in the 60's to pursue the space shuttle and the space station rather than continue visits to the moon. That is why we have not gone back.

 

This cuts to the heart. During the space race the military mentality was driving the development, which means stepping outside the snail pace of civilian government due to an emergency situation. It meant courage and risk while under fire, allowing a lot of results in a short time. The blessing of President Kennedy gave the program the key to the city, allowing them to by-pass the foot dragging. The foot dragging is due to incompetent people in position of decisions, who prefer to slow the pace so they don't make any career hurting mistakes.

What changed was a shift to a civilian mentality, in light of an increasingly bloated busy body government. This was better designed for foot dragging and waste. During war, foot dragging is not a luxury nor will petty regulations stand in the way of the bigger picture. In peace, it is all about avoiding egg on the face.

The civilization mentality of the space program also included the social change that was occurring in culture, which meant inclusion and quotas. The ladies had to be included in space, and we had to make sure they didn't break a nail. This amount of safety was expensive compared to the needs of the dare devil pilot. Now if there was any risk it would be delayed and avoided, with safer projects chosen. This was also about politicians avoiding blame. Spending more money and time, while acting concerned was better in terms of career.
