So I bought a domain name and opened up a shared hosting service, but I haven't got a clue what I'm gonna do with it. I thought I might host YouTube videos, yet that doesn't really sound very interesting. I dunno... Anybody have any ideas?

What is your overall objective? Was your underlining plan to make money or just to learn about something that you haven't had experience with before?

It's important to know those sorts of things before trying to decide what to do.

Well, it would be nice to make money, but I don't have anything to sell. It would great to have a site that people enjoyed. I just don't know what content would serve that purpose.

What are you into? Do you program? Any hobbies or interests? If you are going to do any periodic maintenance it might as well be fun. I've resisted going that route, but I'm about to cave in. So I'm interested to hear how it goes for you, since mostly I'm seeing this from the outside, without the perspective you're giving as a new blank slate operator.

this would be a good start.
also make it easy for the "lookers" to give you feedback.

i would start with something i liked, then listen to the feedback for ideas on improvements.

It's not very expensive to start. $15.00 for a three year domain registration and $5.00 a month for the hosting. I even picked up a free program that allows me to build a limited website, which is fine for now since I'm just starting. Getting the host up and running was a bit of a challenge, but it's working now.

I'm just short on ideas. My loves are pretty limited at my age. I do like to make videos, but they have a limited audience, and it's hard to compete with YouTube. I'm still thinking on it.

I was thinking it might be cool to host unknown artists, but that is just a thought.

Oh, it's just that my passions have dwindled over the years, and things are more of a passing interest anymore. Fifteen years ago I would have dedicated my website to fly fishing, but that simply isn't something I do anymore. I was once very passionate about it.

I turn fifty on the 23rd. I don't mind getting older, but I do miss the youthful enthusiasm I once had. I'm not dead, I just don't have the verb of my younger days.

So let that be a lesson to all you youngsters: follow your dreams and do as your heart tells you. You're only young once in your life. Don't let it slip away without enjoying it.

50? I dimly remember turning 50 more than a decade ago. :itold:

It is all about cost and benefit, balancing the equation.

What I got as I lost my 'youthful vigor' was patience and persistence. Part of that was from investing in long term projects that took major research and years to finish. Younger competitors could not even begin to estimate the job as they lacked the education and experience.

When I was younger I could come up with a burst of energy to do something quickly. Now I run 2 marathons total mileage every week, something I could not do when I was less experienced. The passion is still there, only wider and deeper.

Why buy something that you really don't need because you don't have any use for it at all?

I try to think about what it is I'm buying or doing before I go out and either buy or do it. I can then evaluate what is really something I want or need and dispose of the rest of the nonsense I come up with. Occasionally I come up with stuff I don't need and still buy it but tend to let it lay around and not use it at all which is wasteful when I look back at buying it to begin with.

As time goes by I have learned what is important in my life and what's not which makes things a little easier to want to have any longer. Trying to just fill up my life with "stuff" isn't something I need to do any longer and have long since stopped making hasty decisions about what to buy.

Hosting unknown artists is a very good idea, especially in these days where music discovery gets so much attention.
I have made a few sites for Indie bands and was involved in a radio station that only played indie and I assure you,
this segment of the industry is full of talent that is in need of exposure. The old way of signing up to a big, fat record label are
over - there are hundreds of bands and that's the blessing and curse of it - because someone has to filter out the jokers and present the gems.

I think a site that focuses on that niche wouldn't make you a million, but it will only cost you time.

I watch my son as he explores his music interests. I listen to my daughter's pop when we're in the car. I know there must be other artists out there. It just seems like a daunting task to acquire them. It's something to mull over.

That sounds interesting. I once started a website, installing php forums and such. It didn't go to well, and the liability scared me.

It is so inexpensive that I just jumped into it. I figured that I can work on it as time and inspiration allowed.

I downloaded the trial version of DreamWeaver. I can't say I'm impressed.
