My problem is that the files I wish to transfer from the pc (audio) will not
copy directly onto a flash drive, although they will copy anywhere on the
pc. I don't know why this is, as they are not faulty (at least on the pc).

You did create a file folder for them to go to on the flash drive?

I only ask because the first time I used a flash drive I was unaware of that little requirement.

I saved all the files to the pc desktop, in a newly named folder, dragged and droped the folder into the flash drive. It started the copying process, and after a few seconds up pops a message saying it cannot copy one of the files because the path is too deep. Then if I take that file out and proceed again, the same message pops up pertaining to another file. I've tried lots of different combinations with no fruitive result.
The only thing I haven't tried is to copy the files directly on to my laptop, which is the reason for the thread.

The programme that I created the files from, is Cubase 4.5, so I don't know if I'm doing anything wrong there. I am an Ableton Live person myself (for those who know about music software). Also, it is not on my pc, but someone elses. I never have any trouble like this on my pc.

I thought it was the flash drive, but it works perfectly on any system.
I even tried using a couple of other drives, but got the same result.

Does the audio programme you're using seal the files with a protection against copying or changing or something like that?
I've heard some can do that, and some have options to switch this function off.

 

Not to my knowledge.
But if that was the case, I'm sure the message would indicate that was the case.

It's hard to diagnose a problem like this remotely. There were just a few things that came to my mind you might try with a problematic file:

(1) send/receive as email attachment
(2) move from one folder to another on original PC
(3) upload/download on a file transfer service like DropBox.

Also consider:
(1) go to one of the problem files. Right click - Properties - Security. Make sure it's not protected against read/write/modify.
(2) since you said it's music-related, see if it's indexed as a Library folder such as Music or MyMusic, as the actual storage location is different than the Library shows. I think you want to be in the navigator window, not the Library window, when you pick the file or folder up and drag it away.
(3) a file that is in use can not be moved. Not sure if that applies.

The actual error you are getting, directory too deep-I have seen something like this before-where the program doing the file transfer actually gets lost in a recursion. Unfortunately it was due to a virus, so be on guard for that too.

Oh-last ditch effort: you can try to bypass Windows, go to the command prompt (DOS emulator) and get control of the situation with the keyboard.

 

It could be that the "path/filename" is too long. Limit is 256 characters I believe...

yep shorten the filenames if your getting name to long. also your using flash so it will be formatted to fAt32 so no files bigger than 4 gig. best just create a folder called music and copy all the files in it. rename them track1.wav or hat ever and increment em.

as for copying straight to another pc. you can do it wirlessly over your home network very easily. just open the source and destination folders. select right click and copy. go to the dest folder rightclick and select paste. all files will be copied over. if you drag and drop theres always a chance you will just move them deleting the originals from the source folder...
if you dont have wifi then you want a 2 way Ethernet cable just connect em both and use some software like laplink or create a lan and access the files that way.

Do ethernet cables link the two computers?
Would the destinatiination (laptop) appear in the ''computer'' section of the pc as another drive?
If not, where would I find the destinaion (laptop) to drop the files into?

Are they both windows? (pc and lappy)? Ultimately, this wont matter, just asking.

That post is referring to Linux - and you have Windows 7 on both computers?

If so, go to Control Panel>System and Security>Windows Firewall>Allow A Program Though Windows Firewall

You will get a list of various devices and their permissions. I think the default is turned off for files. I would try to turn it on, or, at least temporarily shut down the Windows firewall altogether. (If you feel like the laptop won't infect your PC).

As far as I know, there is no equivalent command in Windows like the one you see for Linux. I'm going to check a little deeper anyway. Hope this works for you.

OK--I checked the Windows Registry and found no string that indicates a "Max_Window" or "MaxWindow" or "fwtcpstr" so most likely that only applies to Linux.

Oh one more thing: can you identify the file type? Are you moving .wav or some other standard file type? Or are there various types? This may give me a clue.

By the way, instead of drag and drop, which literally moves the files, I would instead try to copy and paste.

 

Hey, is it a single file over 3.5 gb? A flash drive is normally FAT format, which doesnt support such files. U may need an external hard drive or splice the file into under 3 gb chucks to trasnport.
