My older brother produced two CD's and did much the same as you. It didn't make him rich, but I think he enjoyed doing it nonetheless. Some stuff you do just for yourself. Maybe you're lucky when you can make money from something you enjoy doing.

One never wants to expend personal resources on a goal without some preliminary research on it's chances of success. I find artists who wish to chastise the public for not bending to their personal whim in artistic direction ironically amusing, thank you.
I don't know, maybe it's the many hours of free concerts at the nursing home wherein one learns to not chop off the hand of those reaching in their pockets for some sympathetic gratuity, before the goods have completed transfer.
They call it art for a reason, but that reason shifts out of sight so very rapidly. Only an artist can keep with that timely fluidity.

Get out the way, old dan tucker
Your too late to get your supper
Supper is over an dinner is cooking
Old dan tucker just standing there alooking.

Only someone who knows in their hearts that they truly don't have any creativity or talent whatsoever would say something that stupid, or play covers at nursinghomes...haha. Even chimpanzees can do that. If you claim the public to be in posession of any taste or have any clue what is going besides outside of their asses then you are even dumber than they are.
Dumb, dumb, dumb...hey soon we have a Rihanna song going on..:roflmao:

My advice to you is to don't hold back on your combination "Dominatrix/Enya" vibe. It suits you somehow. Own it.

    Hahaha!! Dominatrix/Enya---:spank:

Is this where I have to admit that I actually do like some of Enyas songs, but then feel compelled to display my utter and total dismay for the whole new age celtic glorification, too much folklore, but as soon that that has been corrected I can like from afar without contempt?

    Ah, the nursing home gig.
When no one with the freedom to walk away will suffer you. And where you can tell your fragile ego that you're providing a service.

My family has orders to shoot me first.

    Edit:

Joking aside, I really do think it's a good service for both parties in a lot of cases.

    I agree.
But I let it drive me to the brink. Then I woke up one day and the thing that defined me was broken. I couldn't find any good in the only thing that gave me a sense of worth.
In 2008 I had completed the best work of my life and knew I couldn't ever top it. Worse, I had no format to support it.
So I put it on the shelf and walked away.
It doesn't own me anymore. I'm now in the process of finding out what the new relationship will be.

Well, I read through this entire thread and I don't want that time to have been wasted so I will say something, even if it is stupid or irrelevant. Even if some of you have made me feel my age a tad. :itold:

Wing Chun Kung Fu is an extremely effective form of self defense as well as a great method to preserve and enhance a persons health, grace and flexibility. Wing Chun was given the Way of Gung Fu and the knowledge/use of the Hall of Wooden Warriors (Mook Jong) to preserve for purpose, and Shaolin did not error in that choice. What she (a saint to the martial arts) preserved for us gave us such as Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan. The movie "Ip Man" may familiarize the uninitiate to this. Heck - "sticking hands" alone is worth taking it up.

If a geezer can make a solid living doing covers with his voice and git - fiddle at seniors homes, then more power to him. My old ma just passed away in a nursing home after 8 years living there. She couldn't get away from the fire and brimstone preachers that usually spout at the residents, but she would hang in there for a geez with a guitar, for sure. One of her few real joys beyond the occasional sneaked chocolate. Those folks deserve some fun too, ya know? Somebody has to do it, and if they get paid for it then they are making a living doing what they love. How can that be a bad thing?

Besides, a bar stool in front of a crowd is a bar stool in front of a crowd, no matter if they are young or old...as long as it pays. Been there, done that.

Being an artist is about doing what you love and getting paid for it. We can't all be Leonardo Da Vinci though, somebody has to clean and repair, paint the signs and cars, do the cut and paste for commercials. If you really want to be a professional artist and what you are doing isn't paying the bills, then you need to widen your perspectives, get creative, lose your high-horse pride and find something that you can apply your great and magnificent creativity to that does pay the bills. If you cannot do that, then you are neither creative or patient enough to make it as an artist.

    No charge, this time.

    Bebe, I enjoy you.

Hi, this is a bit off topic from the Pagan Worship of Babelina but since the topic came up I'll respond to it. Wing Chun Kung Fu is a fine traditional martial art. But the problem is that these guys in particular ran into, is that they claimed to be the Ultimate fighting Art.

And were foolish enough to accept challenges from Mixed Martial Artists and allow it to be filmed and placed on Youtube.

I've myself trained in traditional martial arts for many years, and I can understand how people can become protective of a style they've invested a lot of time on. But you need to be scientific not emotional about it, and let the preconceptions go when they are proven wrong.

It's a logical assumption that a specialist is better at the thing they do than a generalist.
Wing Chun Kung Fu like many other traditional martial arts has the failing that it assumes that everyone is going to respond to it in a similar stand-up fashion.
But they challenged grappler's, and when grappling is dropped into the mix it becomes 90 percent certain that the grappler is going to get within grappling range. (That's what they're trained to do)

At that point the fight for the stand up fighter is pretty much over, it was proven in the early UFC fights and countless times since. And going away and trying to develop anti grappling techniques without actually learning how to grapple didn't work for the Wing Chun guy's.

After they lost several more times the excuses started, "That guy you beat wasn't a real master, the real masters that can detonate you with one baleful stare are sitting on a mountain in China contemplating their navels."

But strangely enough no Pai Mei like Kung Fu character appeared to avenge them.

I'm not saying these thing's to offend any Kung Fu enthusiasts, but in the real world a Boxers are confirmed as the best punchers, Muay Thai Fighters as the hardest kickers, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and Free Style Wrestlers as the best grappler's, and Judo guys as the best at throws.

This assessment is not just from observation but a life time of martial arts experience starting a 12 years of age.

Yep, though the details may vary a tad here and there. 39 years of TKD here, plus a bit of this and that along the way. Just because a practice has been around a long time or has proven to be ineffective in the ring when applied to another practice is no reason to dismiss it offhand, however. In China it is said that "Gung Fu is for the young, Tai Chi is for the old."

There is profit in taking up even a weak and/or ineffective martial art as well. At least the practitioner is getting some exercise and moving around. Beats being a couch potato.

Inspirational words, as often your words are.

Reminds me of a George Carlin saying to the effect of: An artist knows no satisfaction, only differing degrees of dissatisfaction.

But your last sentence is key. What does it mean to "make it" as an artist? Ultimately, it's whenever you make a decision to simply say " There. Now I've made it".

Oh and lest I forget, all praise and glory to the highest, Bebelina !

    1. A grandiose sense of self-importance (eg, the individual exaggerates achievements and talents and expects to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements)
    2. A preoccupation with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love
    3. A belief that he or she is special and unique and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions).
    4. A need for excessive admiration
    5. A sense of entitlement (ie, unreasonable expectations of especially favorable treatment or automatic compliance with his or her expectations)
    6. Interpersonally exploitative (ie, takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends)
    7. A lack of empathy (is unwilling to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others)
    8. Envy of others or a belief that others are envious of him or her
    9. A demonstration of arrogant and haughty behaviors or attitudes
