broccoli obviously does not have every nutrient, but it is one of the few foods that contains some of each of the micronutrients minus vitamin A, b12, and certain amino acids. I forgot to mention vitamin A earlier, a vitamin that is found naturally in very few foods and best obtained from the sun. It is probably the best option because it is actually a better source of all the nutrients (except the above mentioned) than it is of calories, which means that even if it is relatively low in some of the nutrients it does have, you will consume enough and/or close to enough of most vital nutrients before you even reach daily calorie requirement. Not to say anyone would eat broccoli alone because that would not taste good, but even it's less abundant nutrients are close to or even more abundant than it's calorie supply.

I actually read that a superfood is a kind of food that provides lots of nutrients but without lots of calories. That includes some fruits, especially berries as well as most green leafy vegetables.

I think the concept is nonsensical.

they are superfoods because they ensure optimal nutrition and don't just act as a meal, but act to provide substantial health benefits. many foods like potatoes, spaghetti , regular bread, beef and so on are foods that normally one would not consider as junk food, but they provide few nutrients each and lots of calories or sugars or fats. I just did a google search and the description was not much different, especially when looking at the wikipedia entry.

It has Vitamin A, it's lacking in Vitamin D, which you make from sunshine.

Broccoli could be everything you guys claim and I still would not eat it. It tastes bloody awful! I'll stick with meat, bread, fruits and chocolate, and take my supplements.

yes it does have vitamin a. in fact it has a lot of it. it's such a good source that to get enough vitamin A you will only consume a fraction of calories worth of broccoli and thats even with something else like dipping sauce.

broccoli does tast super aweful but when cooked it is suprising how it goes from bitter aweful to a neutral taste like that of lettuce, or potatoes in that there is no bad taste especially with dressings, sauces ect yet at the same time all the nutrition power is not removed from the cooking. One cool thing I learned is that broccoli can prevent sun damage acting essentially as a sunblock. last year after eating broccoli I went out in the summer and took as much sun as I could and never got sun burnt once. Normally I would have gotten burnt a lot, but the broccoli apparently worked because I never burned instead i got really dark for taking sun in nonstop without consequense. I had to eat a lot of broccoli for it to result, but it worked. wierd but true. A google search would result in plenty info about broccoli's sun protective properties

I know, that's why I corrected you. You posted that it was MINUS Vitamin A. Then you erroneously claimed that you get Vitamin A from the Sun etc etc

I accidentaly mixed up vitamin A with vitamin D. Vitamin A is the vitamin in very large amounts in broccoli, but in the form of beta carotene. that is responsible for a large amount of it's antioxidant properties. After looking for food sources of vitamin D I found out that sardines is not just a source of vitamin d but it is rich in it.

My taste buds say just the opposite. I can tolerate fresh broccoli in a green salad, but cooked broccoli tastes like prison food. I feel the same way about most greens. When I make a salad (I lied, I force myself to gag my way through a salad several times a week) I use raw spinach as the major green. But I can't stand cooked spinach.
I find the best way to prevent radiation damage is to stay indoors during the daylight hours.

All a google search finds it that when a Broccoli Sprout extract is SMEARED on the skin it acts as a sun-block.

No evidence that eating it does so though.

I had some Amish-grown broccoli this summer that reminded me very much of the flavor of Husmans or Lays potato chips.

Out of date Broccoli tastes absolutely disgusting.
It is one vegetable that cannot be left.
It needs to be fresh, green, and not overcooked.

The best way to use it as a sunscreen is to hold it in front of your face.

Actually they said a green smear of broccoli-sprout extract works pretty good.

You might LOOK a tad wierd at the beach however.
