I wouldn't know why intelligent people use profanity, but I believe it is a part of every language and it must have a function other than indicating low intelligence. If complex language ability is a defining trait of being human, then profanity might be our solution to stop biting or scratching each other every time we want to express an intense emotion. It might be used for signifying informality, or simply for releasing the pressure.

To display a strong emotion in a piece of writing(sometimes needed because written word is much less expressive than spoken word is), for shock value, to spite others who sobbily think that profanity has no uses. What does someone who uses profanities (Anyone using profanities, consider yourself requested to reply here!) believe about the relationship they have with the person(s) they are talking to?
